[00:00:00]Hours before Donald Trump's plane touched down in Beijing for a summit with President Xi Jinping, China set the terms of the conversation in public. The Chinese Embassy in the United States released a statement outlining four red lines that Washington must not cross.

[00:00:15]Taiwan, democracy and human rights, political systems and development paths, and China's right to development. The statement was not subtle and it was not private. It was a message delivered in Washington before the American president had even boarded Air Force One. Designed to frame the summit not as an open negotiation, but as a meeting where Beijing's core positions are already fixed. The red lines were not new, but the timing, hours before the most consequential US-China summit since the trade deal, was a signal that Beijing intended to meet Trump from a position it considers non-negotiable.

[00:00:51]Before boarding Air Force One, Trump struck a different tone. He called Xi Jinping a friend and somebody that we get along with. He said good things were going to happen during the visit and described the trip as very exciting.

[00:01:04]When asked about Iran, Trump said he planned to discuss it with Xi, but added that the United States does not need help with Iran. He said the US would win one way or the other, peacefully or otherwise. He described Iran's military as effectively finished. Mr. President, what is your message to President Xi as it relates to the Iran war? Well, I think number one, we're going to have a long talk about it.

[00:01:32]You look at the blockade, no problem.

[00:01:35]Uh they get a lot of their oil from that area. We've had no problem and he's been a a friend of mine. He's been somebody that we get along with.

[00:01:50]>> Mr. President, do you think he needs to intervene at all with the Iranians? Do you Do you he can help in any way? No, >> don't think we need any help with Iran.

[00:01:59]We'll win it one way or the other. We'll win it peacefully or otherwise. Mr. President, do you believe your visit to China will impact of international economy and price of oil?

[00:03:25]I don't think about Americans' financial situation. I don't think about anybody. I think about one thing. We cannot let Iran have a nuclear weapon. That's all.

[00:03:35]That's the only thing that motivates Do you think President Xi can help and contribute to a deal with Iran? He could. I mean, it might be.

[00:03:47]I don't think we need any help with Iran, to be honest with you. They're defeated militarily.

[00:03:52]And they'll either do the right thing or we'll finish the job.

[00:04:11]Uh my relationship with President Xi is a fantastic one. We've always gotten along, and we're doing very well with China, and working with China's been very good. So, we look forward to it. As you know, President Xi will be coming here toward the end of the year. So, that'll be exciting, too. We have a lot of things to discuss.

[00:04:30]Uh I I wouldn't say Iran is one of them, to be honest with you, because we have Iran very much under control. We're either going to make a deal or they're going to be decimated. So, one way or the other, we win. But, we'll be But, we're going to be talking about We're going to be talking with President Xi about a lot of different things. I would say more than anything else, it'll be trade. But, beneath the diplomatic styling, Iran sits directly between the two leaders. China has long maintained strong military and economic ties with Tehran. Iran continues to sell a significant portion of its sanctioned oil exports to Beijing. During the war, the US Treasury sanctioned a Chinese refinery for allegedly purchasing Iranian oil. Washington also sanctioned several Chinese companies accused of doing business with Iran and blacklisted Chinese satellite companies accused of supplying data to Tehran. China has denied providing military aid to Iran.

[00:05:27]Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang responded to the sanctions by saying China firmly opposes illegal unilateral sanctions that lack a basis in international law and are not authorized by the UN Security Council.

[00:05:41]He said Beijing would firmly safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese enterprises. The language is legal. the message is strategic. China is not going to stop buying Iranian oil because Washington tells it to. Trump said the blockade of Iran has been 100% effective and that there have been no problems with China regarding oil flows.

[00:06:00]That claim sits in tension with the sanctions the United States has imposed on Chinese entities for allegedly breaching that same blockade. If the blockade were truly operating without Chinese complications, there would be no need to sanction Chinese refineries and satellite companies. The gap between Trump's public framing [music] and the Treasury Department's enforcement actions tells a more complicated story.

Washington is sanctioning Chinese companies for it and both sides are arriving at the summit with different accounts of what is actually happening on the ground. We firmly oppose this as there is no basis in international law. Illegal unilateral sanctions not authorized by the UN Security Council. During President Trump's visit to China, the two heads of state will have in-depth exchanges of views on major issues concerning China-US relations as well as world peace and development.

Illegal unilateral sanctions not authorized by the UN Security Council will be met with firm measures to safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of our enterprises and citizens. Regarding the situation in Iran, the top priority is to make every effort to prevent the resumption of hostilities.

[00:07:18]Instead of maliciously associating and smearing China, China-US economic ties are mutually beneficial. Both sides should jointly fulfill the presidential consensus.
