He Thought He Was Taking Care of the Dog

[00:00:03]I'm 91 years old. My memory isn't what it used to be.

[00:00:09]My wife has been gone for 8 years.

[00:00:12]Since then, it's just been me and Biscuit. [music] This morning, Biscuit and I were watching TV.

[00:00:21]He kept looking at me, pawed at my arm once, then again, then walked to the kitchen, turned around, [music] stared at me.

[00:00:32]That's when it hit me.

[00:00:35]Well, shoot. I forgot my own breakfast again.

[00:00:40]I got up and made eggs for both of us.

[00:00:44]Everyone thinks I take care of him.

[00:00:46]Well, I'm not so sure anymore.

[00:00:51]What do you think?

[00:00:53]Was Biscuit hungry?

[00:00:55]Or was he looking out for the old man?

[00:00:59]Honestly, [music] no one knows for certain.

[00:01:03]But long before science measured stress or loneliness, humans and dogs were already learning how to live beside each other. [music] Dogs learned to read our faces. We learned to answer their needs.

[00:01:19]Not one keeping the other alive, but both keeping each other going.

[00:01:25]Maybe Biscuit was hungry.

[00:01:28]Maybe he was helping.

[00:01:38]He fed Biscuit.

[00:01:40]And somehow, he fed himself, too.

[00:01:45]Was it hunger?

[00:01:47]Or was it love?
