Why USA is Much Colder Than Europe!Added:
The climate in the United States is often much colder than in Europe, even though much of the continental US lies farther south and closer to the equator.
So, at first glance, it would seem like it should be warmer. But in reality, the opposite is often true. For example, New York City regularly experiences snowfall and winter temperatures dropping to around -10° C. Meanwhile, Madrid, which lies at nearly the same latitude, rarely gets snow, and average winter temperatures usually remain above freezing. Likewise, Paris is located much farther north than Toronto. Yet, winters in Canada are significantly longer and more severe. The main reason is the Gulf Stream, a powerful warm ocean current that begins in the Caribbean Sea and passes through the Gulf of Mexico, where water temperatures can reach about 28° C. It then flows along the eastern coast of the United States before moving northeast across the Atlantic Ocean, carrying enormous amounts of warm water toward Europe.
There, the current warms the surrounding air and prevailing westerly winds spread that heat across the continent, giving Europe a much milder climate. That's why even Norway, which lies at roughly the same latitude as Alaska, experiences relatively mild winters and has ice-free coastlines. In North America, however, conditions are very different. Along the western coast of the United States flows the California current, a cold ocean current that keeps temperatures cooler in the western states, even during summer. At the same time, massive pools of cold air form over Siberia during winter, strengthening Arctic air masses and intensifying polar cold. These freezing air masses then move southward across Canada and sweep into the central and eastern United States, bringing extreme cold, snowstorms, and sudden drops in temperature.
