Russia's Putin Is Spending $26 Billion on Gene Therapy & Organ Bioprinting To Extend Human Life

And that man is none other than Russian President Vladimir Putin. At 73, Putin has already spent more than two decades in power and shows no sign of stepping aside. Russian law allows him to seek another term in 2030, potentially keeping him in office until at [music] least 2036.

[00:00:28]He would be over 80 by then. But Putin may be thinking a lot further into the future. Picture this, in September 2025, Putin was in Beijing for a military parade alongside Chinese President Xi Jinping and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. A hot mic caught their conversation. Putin's translator was heard saying, "Human organs can be continuously transplanted. You can achieve immortality." She added that humans may live up to 150 years this century. Putin later confirmed the exchange himself.

[00:01:01]This wasn't just talk. In 2024, Putin unveiled a project called new health preservation technologies. The Russian government pledged billions towards technologies designed to extend healthy lifespans. Last year, the initiative turned into a national priority with $26 billion allocated to the project. Russia says scientists are developing a gene therapy treatment aimed at slowing cellular aging. According to a Wall Street Journal report, the initiative promises to save 175,000 lives by the end of the decade. The goal is to bring production between 2028 and 2030. But there's a catch. No known human trials have been conducted yet.

[00:01:46]Here's the theory. Inside your cell is something called the rage receptor. When activated, it triggers inflammation and accelerates aging. Russian scientists believe blocking this receptor could slow the process. But that's not all.

[00:02:01]Researchers are also exploring bioprinting and xenotransplantation, growing human organs inside mini pigs.

[00:02:09]Scientists claim they have already produced human cartilage tissue and successfully bioprinted a mouse thyroid gland. Their next goal is human organ replacement by 2030. [music] The Wall Street Journal reports that the initiative is being spearheaded by Putin's daughter, Maria Vorontsova, alongside Mikhail Kovalchuk, head of the Kurchatov Institute, the Soviet-era nuclear research center. This isn't Putin's first brush with longevity science. Russian media reports have made some pretty gory claims involving the Siberian red deer to help rejuvenate the skin and improve heart health.

[00:02:51]Reports also suggest Putin uses cryotherapy chambers, exposing the body to extremely low temperatures. He also frequently takes part in Russia's annual Orthodox Epiphany tradition, plunging into freezing water to commemorate the baptism of Jesus. Other reports also claim that he has long used specialized bioregulator peptides to promote healthy aging. Media reports have long speculated about cosmetic procedures to maintain a youthful appearance, though the Kremlin denies this. From shirtless horseback rides in Siberia to televised judo demonstrations, the former KGB agent has long cultivated an image of strength and fitness. The timing of the initiative is significant. Russia is grappling with a demographic crisis, and the average life expectancy for Russian men is just 67 years, nearly a decade lower than in the United States. Whether Russia's anti-aging ambitions will succeed remains [music] unclear, but for Putin and the Kremlin, extending human life is no longer just a scientific challenge. It is now a national priority.
