Romania Under Attack: Powerful 'RUSSIAN DRONE' Bombards Residential Apartment; NATO On AlertAdded:
The war in Ukraine may have just sent another shockwave across NATO's border.
A residential apartment building in Romania, a member of the NATO alliance, was reportedly struck by a drone overnight, leaving civilians injured and raising fresh concerns about the growing reach of a conflict that continues to intensify across Eastern Europe. The reported strike took place in the Romanian city of Galati, located just a short distance from the border with Ukraine as Russia and Ukraine exchanged another wave of attacks. According to Romanian radio station proleader FM, a drone hit a residential building in Galotti, causing major damage to the apartment block. The station reported that two people suffered minor injuries in the incident. Local news outlet Viata Liber said the strike occurred during the night of May 29 at a time when air raid alerts had been activated across Ukraine. Authorities said around 70 residents were evacuated from the damaged building following the impact.
According to local officials cited by Viata Liber, the drone's entire explosive payload detonated on impact, triggering a fire at the scene.
Emergency services were deployed immediately and officials later announced that there was no longer any need to evacuate additional sections of the building. Galati occupies a highly sensitive location on NATO's eastern flank. The city sits roughly 10 km from the point where the borders of Romania, Muldova, and Ukraine meet and lies close to Ukraine's southern Odessa region. Its proximity to the conflict zone has repeatedly placed it near military activity linked to the war. The reported incident comes as fighting between Russia and Ukraine enters another intense phase. Large-scale missile and drone attacks have become increasingly common with both sides carrying out strikes far from the front lines.
Romania has already experienced several incidents involving military debris and drones near its territory since the conflict began. Earlier this month, Romania's Defense Ministry reported that an unexloded projectile had been discovered on private property near the Ukrainian border.
The United States declined to directly condemn Moscow after Russian officials warned of possible future strikes targeting what Russia described as military facilities and decision-making centers in the Ukrainian capital. This as European Union claims that the Americans have already evacuated their embassy in capital Kev. Instead of issuing a direct rebuke of Russia's warning, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio framed the situation as part of a broader cycle of wartime escalation. The response has drawn attention because several Western governments backed a separate diplomatic statement criticizing Russia while the United States did not join that declaration.
That response is triggering new questions about Washington's stance as Moscow signals possible attacks on Ukrainian military linked sites in the capital. According to Russian authorities, Moscow warned of systematic and consistent strikes against military linked sites in Kev. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Nav reportedly delivered that message during a phone call with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Moscow also reportedly advised foreign nationals to leave Kev amid concerns over possible future strikes. Russian officials presented the warning as a retaliation linked to recent battlefield developments. Moscow has maintained that its focus would be military infrastructure and decision-making facilities while rejecting allegations that it threatened diplomatic compounds or civilian embassies. Speaking to reporters, Rubio declined to directly accuse or condemn Russia over the warning. Instead, Rubio described Keev as a dangerous place that has faced years of conflict and instability. He argued that wars often spiral through retaliation cycles where one strike is answered by an even larger counter strike.
>> Well, this is what happens with these war. you continue to ask your big strike coming one way, their jiggle strike coming back and that's how these things unlock things to go. It's why the war needs to come to look every time you see these big strikes from one side or the other, it's a reminder of why this is a gerald day war that's now gone on longer than the second world war and it needs to come to an end. And uh the US stands ready and prepared to help do whatever we can to help facilitate the end of this war. Um and uh hopefully the opportunity will present itself at some point that we could play that role.
>> According to Russian authorities, the warning followed a deadly drone strike on an education facility in the town of Starulk. Russian officials claimed Ukrainian drones struck the site, killing 21 people, most of them young women, and injuring more than 60 others.
Moscow described the incident as a war crime and a deliberate terrorist act.
Ukraine rejected those accusations, dismissing them as pure propaganda. The diplomatic dimension intensified after Ukraine's envoy to the United Nations, Andre Melnik, circulated a joint statement backed by more than 50 countries. The statement condemned what it described as escalating Russian attacks and threats toward diplomatic institutions. I would like to read out a statement on behalf of Ukraine, Albania, Andor, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzgoina, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Cyprus, Czecha, Denmark, Estonia, Fiji, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Marshall Islands, Monaco, Montenegro, the Netherlands, New Zealand, North Macedonia, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Republic of Moldova, Republic of Korea, Romania, San Marino, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the European Union.
We wish to draw your urgent attention to the fact that the Russian Federation has reached a new appalling level of aggression against Ukraine by further intensifying its attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure.
On the night of May 23 to May 24, Russian armed forces launched one of the largest combined attacks against Ukraine, employing hundreds of aerial weapons, including ballistic and cruise missiles as well as unmanned aerial vehicles.
For the city of Kev, this was one of the most devastating attacks recording to date. Other regions of Ukraine were also severely affected.
Many civilians have been killed and injured across Ukraine.
Moreover, the Russian Federation appears to have struck the city of Billeta with an arnik medium range ballistic missile specifically designed to carry nuclear warheads.
Russia's repeated use of nuclear capable missiles constitutes an unacceptable escalation. We strongly condemn Russia's escalating attacks. Attacks against civilians, civilian objects, and Ukraine's critical energy infrastructure, constitute grave violations of international humanitarian law, and must cease immediately. We call for a full immediate and unconditional ceasefire as well as underscore the urgent need for concrete humanitarian measures including the complete exchange of prisoners of war, the release of all unlawfully detained persons and the safe return of all internees and civilians who have been forcefully transferred or deported, including thousands of Ukrainian children. These steps are essential confidence building measures for advancing meaningful peace efforts.
Russia's ongoing war of aggression against Ukraine constitutes a grave and continuing violation of the charter of the United Nations and of fundamental principles of international law and undermines the rules-based international order as well as international peace and security. We reiterate our demand that the Russian Federation immediately seize its war of aggression and ensure the full immediate and unconditional withdrawal of all its forces and military equipment from the entire territory of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders. We reaffirm our unwavering commitment to ensuring full accountability for crimes committed under international law. All those responsible must be held to account.
We also reaffirm our strong commitment to the sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders. We further reiterate that the attempted illegal annexation of parts of Ukraine's sovereign territory by the Russian Federation is null and void under international law. We welcome the the sustained efforts of the United States, European countries, and other member states aimed at bringing this war to an end. We stand united in our determination to achieve a comprehensive, just and lasting peace for Ukraine consistent with the charter, including the principles of sovereign equality and territorial integrity of states. And the last point, we also condemn recent threats by Russia to diplomatic institutions and embassies in Kiev. This is something which we cannot accept. I thank you for your attention.
>> Meanwhile, the European Union's high representative claimed Thursday that the United States evacuated its diplomats from Ukraine after Russia warned foreign envoys to depart Keev ahead of what Moscow signaled could be a major wave of strikes in the capital.
>> What they are doing now is really increasing the terrorist attacks because you can't really describe it in other ways. um creating fear inside the society. It hasn't worked for four uh years. Um but uh I don't think that it's going to work now. Uh also what we heard from Ukraine yesterday was that uh all uh the embassies stayed except uh except one. So that also takes courage from uh those embassies. But uh but yes, all the Europeans stayed, America left.
