Surprisingly, that rate had barely changed since the late 1600s, but there's an important detail. It was never meant to be a full living wage. The army already provided food, clothing, and shelter, so soldiers' pay was treated more like spending money. Many troops used it on cigarettes, rum, postcards, or small comforts from home.
