The Treaty 7 First Nations (Nakota, Siksika, Piikani, Kainai, Tsuut'ina, and Stoney Nakoda) have maintained their cultural presence at the Calgary Stampede since 1912, despite government restrictions that limited their ability to leave reservations. The Elbow River Camp, originally called the Indian Village, serves as a vital cultural bridge where 26 tipis represent the five tribes of Treaty 7, allowing visitors to experience traditional crafts, food, storytelling, and dance performances. The camp was relocated in 2016 from its historic location on the south side of Stampede Park (prone to flooding) to its current home across the Elbow River and Enmax Park, and was officially renamed in 2018 to reflect indigenous sovereignty and modern respectful identity.
