Sixteen years of field experience proves that true archaeological insight is found in the dirt, not the ivory tower. This masterclass in regional history shows that a dedicated hobbyist can often outshine a detached academic.

Added:[music] >> Well, today is October 26th.
Just out for a little walk.
And I mean look at that.
Boy, if that's a fake or not real.
Look at that.
Look at that. What you Uh so awesome.
There is no sun out this morning.
It is cloudy, early, a little bit of rain.
Not any hard rain now.
Rain.
That's amazing.
Thank you, great spirit.
Thank you for all those who come before us to leave the finds left behind.
And thank you to all that come and watch and comment.
And everybody I've actually made friends with.
Thank you. Thank you all.
And you see that tip sticking out down here. Ain't that awesome?
And I hope the rest is there.
I hope it is.
It is there.
Man, that bird point and then this this morning for October 26th.
That's awesome.
That is so awesome.
Man.
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
Today is October 29th.
And that is so small. Like I am so surprised I even saw it.
Get it in the camera, Mike.
Look at that little bird point, would you?
Made for a flake.
But look even with it cloudy out, you can see that indoor corn outside.
The flaking on that side.
Yeah, that's awesome.
It's so thin, I bet it's translucent.
Huh.
Beggars ain't never choosy.
Uh thank you. Thank you.
Man, sometimes moving slow walking along and using that thing, you can actually see right there where I touched it with the tip of that.
And this was there.
Now that's tiny tiny bird point.
It's missing that part of the base and the tip, but now for as hard as those are to find, I don't care.
It could be the tip of one. And I have found sometimes just that much.
We'll take it.
Thank you, Great Spirit.
Found this while ago.
Dry dirt's always super glitchy on your points. You got to clean them up really good.
But once I get like most of my soft dirt out, and I've gone through it on my little upper pad up here, then I kind of brush my fingers with my glove against the wall in case something falls out. Look what fell out.
Ooh. [groaning] Man, that's going to be a nice one.
I don't think I'm going to car wash it though, cuz I didn't bring much to drink. And that's a lot of dirt to eat.
And no telling what's in this old dirt.
But, man, it's going to clean up nice.
Mhm. Thank [music] you, great spirit.
>> [music] >> Today is January 7th, and I finally get to get on the board.
Out today with my old buddy Hook, Richard Rock House.
Look at that.
Nice little Dixon.
Awesome possum.
Thank you, great spirit.
Man, that's stellar.
That always makes a guy happy.
Today is February 3rd, our second day outside the big deep freeze and all the snow, and look at that beauty I just come across.
Oh, yeah.
Huh.
I'm not sure what to call that.
That's some sharpening done that edge.
That is awesome.
Heck yeah, we will take that.
Thank you, great spirit.
Still February 3rd.
This is one of those pieces don't know if it's going to make it the video or not.
Oh, couldn't tell if it was a actual whole point or what, but you know, it sure is.
That's a tip.
Almost sharpened away to nothing.
Huh, just a tiny little nick off of that.
Huh.
Beggars can't be choosy.
>> [laughter] >> Today is March 5th.
And of course, first of spring ain't till March 20th, but uh always consider March the beginning of spring for us.
There was barely any showing. I mean, just barely. You can see where I touch it with my stick and flipped it out.
A nice little [clears throat] Dickson.
Ain't that awesome?
My old buddy Hook found a nice Motley point already this morning.
Heck yeah.
When you and your buddy are finding, that always makes for an awesome day.
I'll be naming points. I bet I didn't walk eight steps from finding that Dickson.
>> And it jumped right in front of me.
>> That's it's broke.
>> No, it was broke.
>> Yeah, it's broke.
>> Still. That's the name of the game.
>> Well, it's still March 5th.
Man, my buddy Richard found a killer grand cave while I go.
And [clears throat] I just walked up on this bird point, man. Look how sweet that is.
OMG.
That is so nice.
>> [sighs] >> I mean, we should do an old-fashioned car wash, huh?
Yeah, look at that.
Ain't that a beauty?
It's super cloudy out today.
No sunshine at all, but it's warm.
It's like 60-something degrees already.
Man, thank you, great spirit.
Well, we got a little double here. About just found this. Looks like a North blade.
That's what I would call that one for sure.
And then Richard says he's got him a little He's got him a butter knife.
>> a butter knife.
>> And he's got him a little Afton or something close to it.
>> Maybe not an Afton. Maybe just a little I don't know what it is.
Yeah.
>> It's whatever you want it to be. Some kind of little Woodland point.
>> All right.
>> It's always better than >> got that one twice.
>> It's always better than getting skunked.
Forgot to mention on that first blade I found, that was March 6th.
Which we were out yesterday for a couple hours. I just saw this blade laying out there. You can see where I poked at it with this thing. And this right there, there's a blade laying right there along with it.
It's some kind of preform.
Kind of a preform probably for a Rice Side Shallow Notch.
But hey, we ain't never picky.
Beggars never can be choosy.
Thank you, great spirit. It's a beautiful day. Like we're going to hit 78° today.
