In horror cinema, effective psychological horror emerges when environmental elements (colors, sounds, atmosphere) and character performances create a unified extreme experience, making evil feel simultaneously antique, ridiculous, pathetic, and terrifying rather than simply supernatural or monstrous.

Mandy 2018 The Nightmare Nicolas Cage Was Born For本站添加:
So, what you're hunting? Jesus freaks. I didn't know they were in season, man.
Mandy is one of those horror films [music] that doesn't feel like it was written. It feel like it was submitted.
Everything in this movie feel poisoned.
The colors, the faces, the silence, even the air around the character.
And that's how Nicolas Cage works so well here. Because this is [music] not a normal revenge story. This is a man being dragged into grief until there is almost nothing human left to protect.
Yeah, well Just tell me, man. THEY LIT HER ON FIRE. [screaming] THEY WERE WEIRDO hippie types. Then there there was a muscle. It didn't make any sense. There were bikers and gnarly psychos and It's crazy evil. And the horror in Mandy is not just the cult. [music] It is the idea that evil can dress itself like a religion, like freedom, like spirituality, [music] like some hard truth. The cult in the film doesn't feel powerful because they are smart. They feel powerful because they are completely detachment from reality.
That is what make the movie disturbing.
>> [music] >> It's turn occult imaginary into psychology. Not demons [music] from hell, but human beings who have convicted themself. [music] They are about morality. For a while now, words been coming down from the big above, something dark and fearsome out there.
No one knows where they come from, biker gang. Only seen at night. I've seen them once from a distance. What you're hunting is a rabid [music] animals, and you should go in knowing that your odds ain't that good. Don't be negative. That last line is almost funny. Don't be negative. But in Mandy, never feels safe. [music] It feels like the final breath before the nightmare opens. [music] This film is underrated because many people only see Nicolas Cage being extreme. But the performance works because the whole film is extreme.
The world is broken, the color is broken, the sound is broken, and Cage is not overacting inside [music] a normal film.
He's acting in the same temperature as the nightmare around him.
That is how Mandy stays with you. Not because it explains evil, but because it make evil feel antique, ridiculous, pathetic, and terrifying thing in the [music] same time.
