Sunnier weather expected for parts of Southcentral, with numerous ice jams across Alaska

[00:00:01]Welcome back in, 15 minutes past the hour on this Wednesday. Uh yes, still those cloudy skies in [music] South Central. It's been a cool spring, but it is breakup season, Aaron, and we're talking about some flood warnings this morning. Yeah, we've seen some uh new flood warnings that have been issued. Uh the the uh most recent is out towards uh Stevens Village, but you can see the latest breakup conditions across the state from the interior, South Central, and through parts of Southwest. We are seeing water level uh waterways mostly open to open. Now, keep in mind, even though those waterways are open, you could still see some runs of ice uh moving downstream. Now, out uh out at Ruby, along the Yukon, that breakup front and ice jam is still at the mouth of the Yuki. And then, as you head out towards Hughes, that ice jam is still in place with no change in those water levels. So, that flood warning is still in effect for Hughes. And then, as you head out towards Tuluksak, uh we are seeing that ice coming up, uh which is leading to some water level rising as you head out towards areas of the Kuskokwim River. Now, when it comes to that most recent flood warning that has been issued, this is out towards Stevens Village. This is until 4:30 uh Friday morning. Uh and again, this is the Yukon River at Stevens Village. The public has reported flooding on the Yukon River with water levels, which have risen 5 ft since midnight. And that is why we do have that uh flood warning in place for Stevens Village. Uh statewide, you can see numerous locations still up under flood watches from uh the northeastern parts of the interior through the western interior, and then down through Southwest Alaska, uh out towards uh the Kuskokwim River. And this is until 10:00 a.m. today. Uh that flooding caused by an ice jam continues to be possible.

[00:01:33]That ice is jammed in the lower uh channel, and we're going to continue to see that uh potential for those water levels to rise. Uh and that uh ice jam, again, is just upstream of the wide.

[00:01:43]Now, as far as those temperatures this morning, uh we're still fairly chilly for many areas of the state. It has been a cool spring uh for a large portion of Alaska. And with that cool spring, we've kind of seen a delayed breakup. We've also seen more in the way of a delayed uh green-up across a good portion uh of the state. We're going to be watching some rain showers continuing across the Gulf Coast region out towards southeast.

[00:02:03]Now, good news is not widespread rain across the Gulf Coast region like we have been dealing with, uh but we will keep some persistent rain showers uh here around the next couple of days with some isolated activity for inland areas.

[00:02:14]If you take a peek outside uh this morning, you may notice some of that sunshine beginning to break through those clouds. So, we will see some sunshine uh for inland areas of south central today. We'll call it partly cloudy uh to mostly cloudy skies for a good portion of south central. But, we are going to begin to trend a bit drier for coastal areas, although we will keep uh rain around through at least the close of the week. And we'll see an additional inch or so of rain accumulation through Prince William Sound, uh lower amounts as you head out towards Homer and western parts of the Kenai. And while we will largely stay on the dry side for inland areas of south central like we saw Monday and into Tuesday, can't rule out some rain through the Susitna Valley and some isolated showers as you head to uh western parts of the Kenai north into the valley. But again, largely expected to remain uh on the dry side. So, we'll be watching that trend through the rest of this week. So, coastal rain warmer north. You can see 50 in Soldotna, 51 in Anchorage. Notice the further north you live, the better your chances of seeing that sunshine. In fact, Palmer out towards Talkeetna, uh we'll see a gradual increase in cloud coverage towards the evening. But the uh good portion of the day uh will favor some of that sunnier weather. We're still chasing those 50s as uh uh this week still shaping up to be the warmest stretch of weather we've seen all season long. And I know that's a a stretch to say considering it's still chilly outside, but uh those 50s being replaced by those 40s which we have been sitting up under for quite some time. So, any uh any locations that have that sunshine, that drier weather, get outside and enjoy what warmth we do have.
