Think about the last 10 minutes you spent scrolling.
Now name three specific things you saw.
Not the app, not the vibe, three actual things. Can you?
Most people go blank right there. So how do the people who actually retain what they consume online do it differently when everyone else is running the exact same feed?
Here's the playbook almost everyone follows.
Consume more.
Follow better accounts.
Trust that if the algorithm keeps showing you things, the good stuff will stick and the noise will fall away.
That's not a crazy theory. It's just never been tested against what the platform is actually built to do. So what is it built to do? Two players are in this situation. You and a feed that has exactly one way of knowing if it's working.
It can't measure whether you understood something. It can't measure whether you'll remember it tomorrow. It can only measure one thing.
Did you keep scrolling?
That's the entire scoreboard.
And once did they stay as the only number that matters, the incentive underneath it gets very specific.
A feeling of okay, I got what I needed is the one outcome the feed cannot afford because that feeling is exactly what makes people stop.
So nothing in that feed is built to give you a resting point. It's built to keep you one swipe short of finished.
Forever.
Now you might be thinking fine, but if the content is actually interesting to me, personally selected for my taste, shouldn't my brain just remember it anyway? That's how memory has always worked. You pay attention to something you care about and it sticks. Page by page, show by show, that's the whole deal. Push that logic all the way.
This isn't a stranger's content, it's a feed built specifically around what you already click, what you already linger on, match tighter to your interests than anything a human curator could manage.
By that model, remembering what you scrolled should be the easiest kind of memory there is.
10 minutes of exactly your kind of thing should leave you with 10 minutes of stuff you could describe.
Now, put that model in front of an actual test.
Researchers sat down four separate groups. People scrolling short video feeds, people on Twitter, people on YouTube, and people doing nothing at all. Same interest level going in, same attention going in.
Afterward, everyone got checked on the same thing. Whether they could still recall something they'd meant to act on.
Three of the four groups came out fine.
Twitter, fine. YouTube, fine. Doing nothing, obviously fine.
But one group didn't. The short video rapid switching feed was the only condition where memory for people's own intentions measurably broke.
Same content quality across the board.
One format on its own quietly erased what people meant to remember. So, if the content wasn't a variable and caring about it wasn't a variable, something about the switching itself has to be the answer.
Here's the finding underneath it.
People who multitask heavily across media show measurably lower working memory than people who don't.

The switching itself is the tax.
Every jump from one piece of content to the next pulls on the exact mental resource your brain needs to file something away for later.
You're not failing to remember because the post wasn't memorable. You're failing to remember because you never gave your brain a chance to finish the job.
But is that switching cost just an unavoidable feature of moving fast, or is it something more specific than speed?
Actually, it's more specific than speed.
Memory consolidation needs a beat, an actual pause of uninterrupted processing right after something lands before the next thing arrives and demands attention.
A rapid switch feed doesn't just move fast.
It removes the one thing that used to sit between pieces of content, the gap.
It's not that you saw too much in 10 minutes. It's that nothing after any single piece gave your brain room to close the loop on it.
Is that missing gap an accident of the format or something built into it on purpose?
Eventually, it is on purpose.
Before infinite scroll, every feed had a page break, a small built-in stop where you had to decide actively whether to keep going.
That stop was never just a loading limitation.
It was a checkpoint. Infinite scroll was engineered specifically to remove it, and the numbers show exactly what removing it does. A University of Hamburg study found that people using infinite scroll feeds spend over 50% more time in app than people using the exact same content in a paginated format.
Same posts, same interest level.
The only difference was whether the checkpoint existed. The feature's own inventor has since said publicly that he regrets building it.
Does this only affect people who scroll compulsively for hours?
No.
And this is the part that reframes everything. This isn't a story about a few people with weak discipline. It's the same math showing up anywhere a system strips out its own checkpoints.
People don't just scroll longer without that pause. They systematically underestimate how much time they spent in it by as much as half.
The checkpoint was never a flaw that platforms eventually fixed. It was the one mechanism standing between you and forgetting everything that [music] passed through your hands.
So, here's the move and it's specific enough to actually do tonight. The thing that got removed was the pause.
So, the fix isn't consuming less and it isn't finding better content because neither of those touches the actual break.
The fix is putting the pause back yourself.
When you finish a scroll session, stop and run the exact test [music] from the start of this. Name three specific things you just saw.
Out loud or typed in one line, doesn't matter. What matters is that you're doing on purpose the thing the feed was built to make sure never happens by accident. Go back to the start. You went blank trying to name three things from 10 minutes you'd already lived through.
That wasn't a memory problem. That was a missing checkpoint doing exactly what it was engineered to do.
Run the same three thing test the moment you put the phone down before the next feed opens and you're not fighting the algorithm anymore.
You're just giving your brain the one thing the algorithm was built to withhold from you. A place to stop.
