[music] Here we are cutting the front part of the frame off of the 1960s wagon. Joe has got the death wheel out and just going through the last few preparatory steps. Putting some safety crossers here on the frame table so that way when he finishes cutting through that frame, this has something to land on and not on someone's toes. So stay tuned for the drop.
What I'm trying to do now, now that we got all the suspension out of here, is uh there's this little this kind of this uh held the radiator and the condenser right here. This deal that's attached to the core support here.
Um, I think with my new radiator, it's not, you know, obviously not going to be big enough. So, I got to figure out how to get it out of here so I can get it out of here. Blue, come on, man.
Um, I can have access to where I need to make the cuts on the end of this frame stub, you know.
So, basically, I think our goal today, Chris, let me show you what I got in mind here.
um this geometry right here on the end of the frame basically is going to the only spring in the thing in the front that's going to stay. So I'm going to cut this cut all this out of here up to this body mount I think for now. And uh I want to save this that way all the bumper brackets and everything will be you know kind of stock location. I don't have to remake all that stuff. So, once I cut this here, I'll plate this off and cut this off, too. And then I'll add a little crossmember um support right here. And we'll put the Roadster Shop clip in there and kind of see where our our uh our wheel basease is going to end up and the and the stance and everything. So, that'll be our goal today. Get this out, put the clip in there, put the wheels on it, see how it looks.

Yeah, but I got all this stuff in my way. So, I got to be able to I got to be able to uh get in there with the death wheel. You know what I mean? So, now I got this this thing right here. I'm trying to figure out how to get that out of there. And I think I got everything unbolted, man. But it's just kind of corroded in place, you know? So, I'm going to get the hammer out. See if I can make move stuff around. But hopefully we can get that clip in there.
That'll be a good That would be a good goal for today.
>> Now I understand what you meant about the frame table being high.
>> Well, it's nice because if you have a super low frame table, then obviously it's hard to access underneath the car.
So, but if it's high like this, you got to use a ladder and get up and it's kind of a pain in the ass. But kind of best of both worlds. It's it's at a good height because I can get on top of it.
But, you know, mainly I'm going to be underneath it. So I get on a creeper, get underneath it, um have room to to move around. Plus, you know, it's obviously it's it's uh I got it welded to the table, so the frame parts of the the body is tacked to the table. So I don't want to uh you know, I don't want the car to shift around. So we tack it down so it doesn't move on the table.
But, um, then if I really have to get underneath it, I can roll the whole table to the lift, lift everything, you know, lift the frame table up with the car on it and be able to access, too. So, >> Oh, man. You got yourself some new gloves.
>> I know. How about that, man? Splurge on some new gloves, man. I was tired of the metal splinters and the burns. I try to push them because, you know, it's one of these things. These gloves these gloves are awesome, man. They'll go a good long time, but when they're new, it sucks. The break-in period sucks, you know, for the first few days, they're >> just got to like leave them on the ground, drive over them with the DY, you know.
>> Exactly, man. Get them worked >> in. They're kind of tough, man. And uh so once you get them broke in cuz you can feel, you know, a new set of gloves at the end of the day, you're like, "Damn, my hands hurt." Cuz you're fighting these gloves. But once they're broke in, man, they're they're, you know, they're good to go.

and all the structure that went into it.
It just makes, you know, it's just amazing, man.
Now everything's held with plastic clips and ties and brackets, you know, and >> man, the weight of that thing's got to be 10 horsepower.
>> Yeah. Yeah, that's 10 horsepower for sure. [laughter] >> So, yeah, I'm going to come off a basically right off this bracket right here, man. Cut this flush.
>> It's crazy how thick that is.
>> Ain't that wild? The frame. You're talking about talking about the frame.

>> Well, that's the thing. It's It's just You know how stout these cars were built, man.
I mean, there's no uh not much crumple zone to this car, man. It's just like go right through a brick wall.
you know. But yeah, I mean it's it's uh it's just amazing, man. It's a shame to to uh just cuz the geometry doesn't really work for us anymore being that the frame hangs down too low. You can see right here where it's hanging down.
Generally, I like to get everything kind of, you know, level with the rock, the bottom of the rocker. So, I wouldn't want that hanging down. I want the car to sit pretty low. You know, that's what an inch and a half right there. Inch and 3/4 hanging down.
So, I got to determine after I get this out what I'm going to do because I may just, you know, look at it. Look how far down it hangs past this this little pinch mark, this pinch weld right here.
>> You have to make >> I may just make a lip, man.
>> Well, I may just make a whole new like on the Impala. Just do my own frame. used the roster shop stub to get everything in place and uh off of that just basically that like the 60 Impala um cuz trying to retrofit it, you know, and I could even section the bottom of this frame and box it in. But by the time I do that, I can add a whole new rail. And then when I get to the back, I'm going to put a a C notch in it, a 2x4 out of 120 wall. And uh by the time I do that, most of the frame's built, you know what I mean? So I probably spend more time trying to retrofit the stock frame.
Um but it's such a great frame. It's super stout. It's just not going to ride where we want it to. It's a shame to cut it away, but uh it's not going to work for us, I don't think. All right. That's about as straight as that's going to get right there. So, that just eliminates a lot of work having to recreate that to locate the bumper brackets, you know. Um, and you got bracketry underneath here. This little piece is pretty cool. I want to save this piece.
So, if I to cut all that away, then it's just a lot more work for me.
>> Um, >> especially when none of that's rotted, man. Like where that battery was. It's crazy, man. even where the battery was sitting. Usually where the batteries, you know, rotted them out. Within three years, they rotted out. You know, those old batteries. But man, the car is in such great shape, man. I just want to utilize all this stuff cuz this stuff will clean up nice and um you know, blast it a little bit and then put some epoxy on it, some flat flat clear. Man, it'll look killer.
Let me remark it down here.
Um, these back here aren't critical cuz I'm going to I just want to get the stub out so we can line up the road to shop rack.

>> And then from there back, we're going to have to start really chopping things away. Get the rest of that frame out cuz I think I've made my decision. I don't think we can salvage that frame. So to use for our geometry, so we'll get it out of there.
So is this where the project snowballs?

>> Yeah. Well, you know, after looking at it on the frame frame table, once we got on the frame table and we put the wheels on it, that's the that's the thing is I like setting them up first because being that the car is not going to have air ride. I want to do a static ride on it.
That's the critical thing. You don't really know. I mean, obviously when I saw the car, looked underneath it, I saw how that frame hung pretty low past the the pinch molds on the rockers.

>> The pinch welds, you know, and so, um, you know, if that's hanging down, that's just that much more meat that's hanging down, it's going to drag things, you know, so you get all that up.
So, and I thought, well, if I could save the frame, my 64 Galaxy, I did that. I did a front clip on it, tied it into the stock frame, and then towards the back, did a C notch and tied onto it. But that frame, the way it was designed, it's more like a 4x4 square tubing, you know, where this one's like a 2x6 on this uh this old cuz I mean, it's obviously it's a lot of weight being a wagon and they just wanted it stouter, I guess. Um cuz my 60 Impala frame two door hard top it that frame didn't hang down >> you know. Um so they probably you know think if it's a you know going by 2 by six little it's going to be a little stouter and actually not 2x six it's almost like 4x6. I mean cuz the frame's so tall and about 4 in wide 3 and 1 half 4 in wide.
>> Um but it just hangs down too much. So once I get it on there and I can eyeball it and on the table, top of the table simulates where the road will be and where I want the car to ultimately ride.
Um, I determined then there's no way. It's I only got 3 and 1/2 in. I'll be dragging every speed bump. I'll be dragging everything. It's not it's not going to work. So [snorts] I don't want to put car in air ride.
>> I want a killer static ride. And um so we got to build a new frame.

Put a little sting. I can just I can just put one in to just rest. I have to really weld it in there. Actually, just a little kind of take relief off cuz of the frame hanging on the body.
I don't want to put stress top of these fenders or anything weird, you know. So, let me get a quick measurement on that.

All right, cut these down these in. Man, >> I think they can just pressure fit them in because, man, I got to get the rest of the rails out later, you know. So, >> I think I'm just going to put them in, let them kind of rest in there and um hold a little pressure out while, you know, once this is released, all the weight of that frame is going to be kind of hanging on the body. Of course, that's supported, but just so there's no weird binding of the fenders. You know what I'm saying?
So, since you snowballed and you don't care now, if this had have been the original concept, where would you have cut the frame?
>> Well, that's a good question. So, I probably would have cut it.
My plan was if I was going to save it, I was going to save it right at this body mount right here and box it off.
And um and like my Galaxy, I did the same thing. So I boxed this up, trimmed it up, got a box in really nice and solid, and then came along here and cut trimmed a little of this off cuz the car had a little rake. I was able to get more clearance, but that galaxy frame didn't hang down that far. Um that was kind of my plan. Just right here, box it off and then save, you know, obviously all the body mounts. I don't have to recreate that stuff and then tie the clip in. And if only this frame was didn't hang down two inches right here, I would have kept it. But it's just so much work.

>> And to get the ride height and then to get the clearance, get the car sitting nice and and have the ground clearance.
It's just no way. You know, you would think it's going to go like this, man. Cuz look at it's opening up the bottom.

And, uh, probably the weight of this car is just kind of settling out a little bit, too, you know. I mean, settle, you know, the the weight in the back the back of the car from the firewall back.
