High humidity levels significantly increase the perceived temperature (feels like temperature) beyond the actual air temperature, making hot and humid conditions feel much hotter than the thermometer reading suggests.

Hot, humid Wednesday in Charlotte, afternoon storm chances
Added:Let's get over to meteorologist Ted Feiten this morning. Any chance Mother Nature can put a cap on the temperature and humidity?
>> Listen, I tried. That cap blew off way early around 6:00 a.m. when we were still in the low 70s and that humidity and the mugginess is sticking around.
We're really going to ramp up those temperatures this afternoon, making a run for what will be those upper 80s near 90°. Winds coming out of the south at about 6 mph right now, holding on to a again, a little bit of a slow down on Independence Boulevard. So, Charlotte and Monroe, we're looking at low 70s.
Charlotte into the Queen City, you're looking at low 70s through the I-40 corridor as well. Mid-to-upper 60s this morning for our mountain counties. So, a bit of a warm start, mid-70s east of uptown. When you factor in the humidity, it will feel hotter than the temperature is out there. I'm looking at upper 80s this afternoon, feeling like low 90s for your feels like temperatures. A high of 89° while our mountain counties getting to the 70s. So, if you're trying to get away from the heat, higher elevations might be the might be the move for today. 90s Albuquerque, New Mexico into the triple digits Las Vegas, Phoenix, El Paso. Still seeing the above-normal temperatures linger into your Thursday as we usher in those 90s. Cooler conditions up through the Dakotas and into Montana. Average highs this time of year typically land in the mid-80s. I'm looking at low 90s Thursday, upper 90s on Friday. We'll have that heat stick around before cooling back down heading into Sunday and Monday. Certainly going to be on on the hot side, but above what we typically see this time of year. So much so, closer to record highs come Friday. 97° flirting with the record 98 set back in 1956. And our muggy meter keeps the humidity and of course the the the the stickiness coming all the way through the second and a half of the work week. So, clouds and radar quiet for the most part across the southeast. Just moisture lingering overhead. Severe risk to our north towards Virginia for tomorrow. Heading into Friday, that severe risk pushes south with a marginal level one risk.
And today bringing those afternoon storms that could give us a little bit of a downpour and some rumbles of thunder heading into the peak heating hours of the day. 90s finish off the work week, linger through the weekend.
We'll have rain and storm chances come back heading into Sunday and Monday.
