Revolutionary leaders who implement progressive social reforms can be betrayed by their own movements, as demonstrated by Maurice Bishop, the beloved Grenadian revolutionary who was executed by his trusted deputy Bernard Coard in 1983 despite his successful implementation of free healthcare, education, and housing programs that made Grenada a beacon of hope for developing nations.

The Revolutionary Who Was Betrayed by His Own RevolutionAñadido:
The most beloved revolutionary in the Caribbean was killed by his own revolution. It's 1979, St. George's, Grenada. A young lawyer leads a bloodless coup against a brutal dictator. Maurice Bishop [music] promises free health care, education, and housing for everyone. He builds [music] schools, hospitals, and an airport to connect his tiny island to the world. [music] Crowds cheer him in the streets. Foreign leaders visit to study his success. For 4 years, Grenada becomes a beacon of hope across the developing world. But hardline Marxists in his own party watch him with growing suspicion.
>> [music] >> They meet in secret, whispering that Bishop is too soft, too willing to negotiate with America.
>> [music] >> His trusted deputy Bernard Coard begins plotting in the shadows. In October 1983, soldiers surround Bishop's home.
They drag him to a fortress and execute him against a concrete wall. Within weeks, [music] American paratroopers land on Grenadian beaches. The revolution dies with its leader. The man who gave his people everything [music] and lost it all was Maurice Bishop.
