The Chinese Cultural Revolution (1966-1976) demonstrates how political leaders use ideological campaigns as weapons to achieve power objectives when institutional channels are blocked; Mao Zedong mobilized the Red Guards to destroy party rivals and purge intellectuals after losing influence following the Great Leap Forward, resulting in 500,000-2 million deaths and devastating China's intellectual capacity.

Ideology Was the Weapon. Power Was the ObjectiveAdded:
The cultural revolution is taught as an ideological campaign. Mao mobilizing China's youth to purify communist society. That's the surface. Underneath it was a calculated political purge. Mao used mass mobilization to destroy internal party rivals he couldn't eliminate through normal institutional channels. By 1966, Mao had lost significant influence within the Communist Party after the catastrophic failure of the Great Leap Forward, killed between 15 million and 55 million people. His rivals, Lu Xiao Chi and Deng Xingping, had consolidated power around pragmatic economic recovery. Mao couldn't remove them through the party apparatus they now controlled. So he went around it. He mobilized the Red Guards, student radicals with direct personal loyalty to Mao, unleashing them against party officials, intellectuals, and anyone designated a class enemy. The institutions his rivals controlled were dismantled from below, while Mao directed the chaos from above. Lu Shooui died in detention. Deng Xiaoping was purged twice. The cultural revolution killed between 500,000 and 2 million people and devastated an entire generation of Chinese intellectual and institutional capacity. It was packaged as revolutionary purification. It was a power struggle. One man using mass violence to reclaim control of a party that had started governing around him.
Ideology was the weapon. Power was the objective. It always is.
