She pressed her fingers to her lips, not to contain any particular feeling, just to give her hands somewhere to be while she thought.
She picked up her pen.
"You may call on Friday at 11:00 o'clock.
A. Harlow."
Chapter 6 What He said.
He arrived at 11:00 exactly.
The sitting room on Crail Street was small and cared for in the way of rooms maintained on modest means.
A good rug worn at its center, curtains of a blue that had been fashionable some years prior, a vase of white and yellow spring flowers recently arranged.
He noticed these things the way he noticed everything without meaning to.
Anne rose when he entered. Mrs. Bassett, positioned in the corner with her embroidery, acknowledged him with a nod and became very intent on her thread.
He sat. She sat.
A low table between them held tea he hadn't asked for and she had apparently thought to provide anyway.
He found this unexpectedly grounding.
He looked at her. She looked at him. Her hands rested folded in her lap with a composure he recognized by now, not cold but controlled.
A coat she wore in rooms that required it.
She waited for him to speak and she had clearly decided she would not ease the path for him. He thought, "That's entirely fair."
"I'm going to say this plainly," he said, "because I think you prefer plain and because I find I'm not interested in any other approach."
A slight lift of her chin. "I have spent the past 3 weeks trying to manage what I feel for you in a way that is orderly and doesn't create complications for either of us," he said.
"I've failed completely.
The feelings don't become orderly under examination. They become clearer, which is inconvenient but there it is."
She was very still. Her eyes hadn't moved from his face. "I'm not here to ask anything of you that leaves your dignity in any doubt," he said.
"I'm here to tell you that I love you.
I hadn't said that even to myself before this moment, so forgive the plainness of it.
And that if any part of what I feel is returned, I want to find a way forward that is honest and public and doesn't ask you to manage yet another room where you are not made fully welcome. He stopped. The final sentence could have been more elegant, but it was accurate and at the moment that mattered more.
Anne looked at him for a long unmoving moment.
He waited.
He was good at waiting when the thing he was waiting for mattered.
Something moved through her face, not visible in any single feature, but present across all of them at once like a slow tide, a structure coming down, not all at once, but by wall with the deliberateness of someone dismantling something they built for good reason, choosing to set it aside.
Her hands still folded tightened once, then released. "I have been telling myself," she said slowly, "since the first evening that there was nothing here worth feeling, that you were interesting and unexpectedly kind, and that it would be sensible to appreciate that and let it remain exactly what it was."
"And?"
"And I have also failed completely."
She looked at him with the clear steady directness he had come to wait for, the gaze that performed nothing and withheld nothing.
"I should tell you the complications are real, that my name and what the ton has decided to do with it won't dissolve because a duke has declared himself. There will be discussion, people who say you've made a mistake, people who find new stories about me to explain why none of it can be genuine.
"I know. And you?"
She stopped. Then more directly, "You truly don't mind it?"
"I mind it on your behalf considerably," he said.
"But I'm not willing to let what I mind govern what I do."
The silence that followed was warm.
The sun had found its way through the blue curtains and lay in a long pale stripe across the floor between them.
Outside a carriage passed.
Mrs. Bassett's needle moved through fabric with very small steady sounds.
"I love you." Ann said, simply, the way she said most things, without architecture, like handing him something she had been holding for some time, and deciding finally to let go of the weight of it.
"I have not said that to anyone before, so it may be somewhat larger in my chest than I am letting on."
The warmth of it moved through him the way warmth moves through cold hands, slowly, then all at once.
"I am not afraid of large things." he said. She laughed, the real one, the unguarded one, the one that had first turned his head across a room full of careful people performing their finest versions of themselves, and it was the most beautiful sound he had heard in his life, in a room with a worn carpet and afternoon light and a vase of spring flowers, and he held it in him the way you hold something you already know you will not lose.
Chapter 7 What the world said and what they did about it. The engagement announcement appeared on the 12th of May in the correct columns, in the formal language by which such things were delivered to the world. His Grace the Duke of Ashbourne of Ashbourne Park, Wiltshire, is pleased to announce his engagement to Miss Ann Harlow, daughter of the late Thomas Harlow of Dorset. London read it over breakfast.
Several people assumed it was an error.
Others assumed it was strategy, a financial arrangement perhaps, though what the Duke of Ashbourne could possibly need from a penniless family was not obvious, and no one allowed that inconvenience to slow the conversation.
Mrs. Elmira Cavendish set down her tea and said to the room, "Well, Lord Fenwick read it aloud to his wife who paused and then said, 'She was always rather remarkable, you know.'" which surprised him. He had not known she had an opinion about it.
Lady Elton, the Haydn enthusiast from Edmund's musical supper, sent Ann a note by 11:00.
"My dear Miss Harlow, I am utterly delighted and entirely unsurprised.
Would you consent to lunch on Thursday?
I should like to be one of the first to congratulate you properly." Edmund Caro read the announcement, smiled in the private way of a man who's been expecting to be pleased, and wrote Gideon a note that said simply, "Good.

The less generous conversations existed, Ann knew they did. She heard versions, the whispers, the carefully loaded remarks made just audibly enough.
The women who met her eyes with expressions carrying several years of social arithmetic all at once.
She had been prepared for them.
She had been preparing her whole life.
What she had not prepared for was Gideon.
The morning after the announcement, he arrived at Creal Street with the settled energy of a man who has made a decision and has no particular interest in other people's opinions of it.
He sat in the small sitting room, and they talked for two hours, not about the announcement or the reactions, but about Wiltshire and the house there, and what she might want from it, what the music room was like, whether it should be larger, what kind of garden she preferred, whether she had seen the Haydn quartet he had ordered copied out for her, which arrived later that day wrapped in brown paper with a dark green ribbon.
She unwrapped it at her window, alone.
She held the pages carefully.
The specific weight of being chosen, not despite everything, but with full knowledge of everything publicly and permanently and without condition, settled into her the way something settles that has been held tense for a very long time. In that moment, alone with the music and the afternoon light, she allowed herself to feel completely happy.
Not the happiness of aligned circumstances, the deeper and rarer kind, the happiness that comes from being known accurately and loved anyway.
She held it the way he had said he held large things without fear. Chapter 8.
Ashbourne Park, 3 years later.
The morning came in through the east windows of the music room first. It always did.
The house had been positioned for it by some prescient architect two centuries prior who understood that the best rooms should receive the first light. The music room, high ceilings, two good pianos, a north wall lined with scores and bound programs, filled with pale gold before the rest of the house properly woke. Anne sat at the smaller piano barefoot, still in her dressing gown.
It was half past six.
No one would see her except the person currently asleep in the nursery who had no opinions yet about morning attire.
She played softly, an adagio, not the Haydn, though she knew it by heart.
Something of her own, worked out across many early mornings in this room.
Nothing finished. Nothing intended to be.
Just the pleasure of finding a phrase and following it wherever it went.
She heard him in the doorway before she saw him. Not a sound, a change in the quality of the room, the particular shift of a space when a certain person enters it. She kept playing.
He crossed the room in the unhurried way of a man with nowhere to be and settled into the chair near the east window.
The one that caught the morning light.
The one she thought of privately as his chair because he was always in it.
His shirt was untucked, his hair not yet set for the day, and he looked, she had never told him this because she suspected he would be insufferable about it, extraordinarily himself in the morning.
Not performed, not arranged, simply present.
She glanced at him once. He was watching her hands.
She finished the phrase, let the last notes settle. "That's new." He said.
"I've been working at it."
She lifted her hands from the keys.
"It doesn't have an ending yet.
It will, he said.
She turned on the bench to face him.
The light continued to warm, tracing the line of his jaw, the steadiness in his expression that she had, across 3 years of mornings, finally learned to read.
She knew the difference between his performed calm and his actual calm.
This was the real thing.
"The baby woke at 4:00," she said.
"I heard you."
"You should have come down."
He had her.
A pause.
"How is she?" "Back asleep now. Very put upon about having been awake at all. She takes after you in that."
The corner of his mouth moved. "She takes after you. She has your expressions.
She has your stubbornness."
"I'm not stubborn." A beat.
"I'm consistent." She laughed, and the room held it the way it had always held her laugh, warmly, fully, without diminishment.
She had learned to notice this, the way certain sounds belonged in certain rooms, the way this house, so quiet for so long before she came to it, had changed its character in the years since, fuller, warmer in its specific acoustics. She crossed to him. He shifted, and she sat on the arm of his chair, which was not the most elegant arrangement, and was precisely the sort of thing that would have appalled half the drawing rooms of London, and he put his arm around her waist without looking up from the window, the easy, unhurried certainty of a man who always knows where the things he loves are.
"Two more months," he said.
The second child.
The anticipation that had quietly shaped the house since January. "Two months," she agreed. She rested her head briefly against his.
"Are you nervous?"
"Yes," he said, without pretense.
She found his hand, held it.
Outside, through the east windows, the Wiltshire morning spread in long golden green waves, fields still silver with dew, the oaks at the park's edge in their first full green, the sky above them the transparent blue that only exists for about 20 minutes at the start of a day and then is gone entirely. She looked at it and felt as she did on most mornings in this room, the particular and grounding gratitude of a life that had arrived at a shape she had not known enough to imagine for herself.
She had been the girl no one was supposed to love.
The name in gossip columns, the cautionary tale, the girl from the wrong side of the room in the story the ton had written without her consent. In the language of dismissal and small cruelty and the quiet architecture of exclusion, she had been listened to across a room full of careful people performing their finest selves by a man who was paying attention before he knew her name.
She had been seen and argued with and told the truth about what she noticed and found accurate.
She had been chosen publicly, permanently, without condition by someone who understood exactly the cost of the choice and made it anyway.
She had been loved into the fullest version of herself, not changed, unconstrained.
"I was thinking," she said quietly, "of finishing the piece before summer."
The adagio?
Something that begins there. Something longer.
She looked out at the morning.
"I think I finally know what I want it to be about."
He was quiet for a moment, listening in the way she had learned to recognize as his deepest form of attention.
"What is that?" She turned to face him.
This man with his serious eyes and his morning rumpled shirt and 40 years of ordinary extraordinary days ahead of them in this house, in this light, in this room that had waited for the right sound to fill it. "Surprise," she said, "the kind that doesn't frighten you, the kind that arrives like sun after a long November, and you hold it, and you don't let go."
His hand held hers a little more firmly.
He didn't speak. He didn't need to.
Outside the Wiltshire morning stretched on and on, green and gold and wide and still.
Inside the music room with the piano waiting and the light still arriving and the whole quiet beauty of a day just beginning, Anne Harlow, Duchess of Ashbourne, felt her heart settle in her chest like a note finally finding its home key, and held on.
What the columns eventually said.
On the occasion of their fifth wedding anniversary, His Grace the Duke of Ashbourne and the Duchess of Ashbourne were seen at Cavendish Hall for the annual benefit concert, accompanied by their daughter, Miss Clara Prescott, aged three, and their son, Master Thomas Prescott, aged one, who slept through the entirety of the Haydn and woke with perfect timing for the surprise, which delighted his mother and produced a rare and complete smile from his father. The Duchess, now known in musical circles for her original compositions, presented a piece of her own at a private recital the previous evening to considerable and well-deserved admiration.
She was, by all accounts, extraordinary.
