How do bubbles work? Now, all bubbles are just a gas trapped in a liquid. The air gets trapped inside because the top really wants some water and the bottom really doesn't. They're round because a sphere has the smallest surface area per amount of volume, and they pop because the film of the bubble has water in it, and that will evaporate. When two bubbles touch each other, they combine to minimize surface area. They're also rainbow colored because some parts of the bubble film are thicker than others, which affects how light refracts in them.
