I Watched Spain vs France on the Spanish French Border

[00:00:02]There is France. And this is where we're watching Spain versus France.

[00:00:10]I'm hoping we watch the first half here and then we go over there and we zoom there and we watch the second half in France. It was fascinating because this is Basque. So they share an identity between them like in Irun and around this region there are often people who will say they're Basque first and then Spanish.

[00:00:28]So that's another reason I wanted to come here was to explore that dynamic.

[00:00:32]And also there's a Basque identity even for the French people I've read, too. So that's super interesting. So they've got a shared connection but they are technically enemies today.

[00:00:47]So we're waiting for [music] a pizza and you can see the Spanish and Basque language. The difference in the language is so fascinating.

[00:00:56]I do wonder if more people speak Basque or Spanish. Sorry, I just wondered do more people speak Basque or Spanish?

[00:01:06]Yeah. More Basque, yeah.

[00:01:07]>> When some people speak Spanish it's not a problem here.

[00:01:12]>> Exactly. Now the normal language for me is Spanish right now.

[00:01:33]You see that right there? It's Pheasant Island. It's an uninhabited island shared [music] by Spain and France. A population of zero. There's no little there. For 6 months of the year it's owned by the naval commanders of the French town and for the other 6 months of the year it's owned by the naval commanders of the Spanish town. It's a symbol of unity because in 1648 when the two countries decided to stop fighting, they used it as a neutral zone. It's beautiful, really, because it shows the strength of coming together, [music] even when you're against each other, like today. It's also the world's smallest condominium.

[00:02:10]So, we're walking along what appears to be the strip with bars and restaurants, [music] and people are getting themselves sat down and ready, and there's TV screens, but there's in equal measures Basque colors and Spanish colors, [music] and then lots of just t-shirts. It's a gorgeous little place.

[00:02:26]It's got an alpine vibe, [music] some of the architecture I noticed.

[00:02:34]So far, very calm. My experience of seeing those in Spanish tops, French tops, those were in the Basque colors, everyone just watching football, confirmed the beliefs to me that I discussed in the video that it's a very calm, measured, and interesting place. The people around here, they said, "It's a Tuesday night.

[00:02:53]Let's go and have a glass of wine."

[00:02:56]And then, one of their friends said, "You know, there's football on tonight."

[00:02:59]So, they went, "Oh, let's go and have a glass of wine."

[00:03:04]And if there happens to be football on, and there just happens to be football on.

[00:03:11]Some people, they're just not even facing the right way. Maybe it is just the healthy way.

[00:03:20]The original essence of this video was to explore the juxtaposition of the French and Spanish emotion, but instead, I learned of the fascinating Basque country.

[00:03:31]They've just scored.

[00:03:37]And the crowd goes wild.

[00:03:43]Where people are proud to keep their own culture and language alive, you scared her. Me feeling I made a mistake with this video doesn't mean that it is it's a total failure. And also shows that in life we will make discoveries, we'll learn new things, and the best way to learn new things is to go and see it for yourself.

[00:05:02]Suddenly, you're watching Spain not concede in yet another game, and they've been Pedri on Twitter game, and they're already in total dominance and control and comfortable.

[00:05:13]And you're thinking This is not the team you want to play.

[00:05:19]This is not the team you want to play.

[00:05:24]>> [music] >> Will the masses walk away with a bit of lump here in France because it finished Spain [music] 2 France 0? Spain, you could have given France 20 more minutes, they wouldn't have found a goal. Spain were just so organized. It's been a really interesting experience speaking to the locals across the Basque region.

[00:05:44]>> [music] >> Uh there's not real venom, it's just indifference a lot of the time towards the Spanish national team. [music] I'd be so fascinated to come back here during a domestic season. Find out what football means to a place like this. Oh yeah, I'm super [music] interested by that. And this whole region in general, I think there's a real distinct level-headed manner to them.

[00:06:04]Uh but yeah, generally speaking, I'm trying to read the room a little bit because they have just lost where we are, France.

[00:06:10]And I think it's just dawning on a few of them uh behind me.
