On November 2nd, 1932, the Australian military deployed the 7th Heavy Battery of the Royal Australian Artillery, commanded by Major G.P.W. Meredith, with two Lewis machine guns and 10,000 rounds of ammunition to combat an emu invasion. The military plan was to drive the emus into a tight pack and open fire, but the birds adapted by splitting into small groups and running in every direction, making them nearly impossible targets. Soldiers, trained for stationary or slow-moving targets, found themselves shooting at 'ghosts,' resulting in only a dozen confirmed hits out of hundreds of birds, demonstrating how animal behavior can effectively counter military tactics.
