When rounding a decimal to the nearest hundredth, examine the digit in the thousandths place: if it is 5 or greater, round up the hundredths digit; if less than 5, keep the hundredths digit unchanged. To find the difference between the rounded value and the original, subtract the original from the rounded value, aligning decimal places and subtracting digit by digit. For example, with d = 2.0453, rounding to the nearest hundredth gives d* = 2.05, and d* - d = 2.05 - 2.0453 = 0.0047.
