So we look at how to meet your parts and also how to integrate your parts uh towards the final step of this summit which is unity and integration.

[00:04:15]Now before I show you the first extract u I think you know if we've learned something this week from gabar from from bessel and many more is it's that there is scientific evidence that there is enough neuroplasticity in the brain to create those new neural pathways that you need to actually heal. Um there's a man who as a child was abandoned, right?

[00:04:47]He cried and he cried but but no one came and you know no one no one heard him. Um and what that creates in a child is a deep imprint, the trauma of being unseen and for many years that wound stays buried. Uh but it also creates a kind of sensitivity, a radar for for human pain.

[00:05:14]That child uh grew up with this extraordinary ability. He could see through people. He could really cut through the noise. Um he could look past the surface and and really immediately sense what someone was really carrying.

[00:05:33]And and so what began as as a wound when he was a child actually became a gift that that sensitivity that he had allowed him to understand human suffering in a way that really few people could. And that man became one of the world's leading voices on trauma and healing. Not because he studied it from from the outside uh but because he lived through what living with trauma is like and and he had a to find a way out for for himself right and and this man it's Gabbor mate and in the hill program that you're going to see he's really put the essence of what has helped him now you you know, you've seen a lot of videos of him already, probably if you're here. Uh, so you're going to ask, you know, how how can this help? And, you know, we built mentor show because the self-help industry is broken. Um, here's the thing. You know, you consume this next book, you you listen to this next podcast, the next training, and for a moment you feel inspired, you know, you you get that little dopamine hit like, okay, this makes so much sense. But then what happens you know you switch to the next thing and the next learning and in the end nothing has concretely changed.

[00:06:58]Um and mentor show exists to break that pattern. Instead of giving you more information we give you the structure the practice and the accountability because you know consuming more knowledge is not going to change your life. It's really practice that does change change your life. Um, think about I already mentioned that before, but you know, think about a friend of yours who come and see to see you and tells you, you know, I'm g I'm gonna get fit, but actually he's only watching videos on how to get fit and he's not really lifting anything. Um, you think it's absurd and I think it's it's the same for healing. So that's why you know mentor show is here to really catalyze that knowledge from Gabbor from all the experts in in the world and make it applicable and practical to to your life.

[00:07:52]Okay, let's get right into it and already start with a few uh extracts here and uh I'll come back right after the the the first um the first lesson um to answer questions and to present uh to you the the uh the offers and answer questions about the program. This is going to be the first lesson, but I'm going to show quite a few right now. I'm going to give you some parts of the emergency kit. um a lot of different exercises. So, I'm I'm really uh impassioned to get your your feedback.

[00:08:29]All right, let's get started.

[00:08:46]So in this lesson, I'll be telling you briefly [music] what I've come to understand about trauma. And that's a word that's used quite a bit these days. Sometimes in my view inappropriately and in other areas it's not used uh sufficiently at all.

[00:09:07]So it can be both used trivially and somewhat promiscuously but can also be used in a way that misunderstands what it is. So this is my personal take on trauma. It's not necessarily everybody understands it but throughout this master class when I use the word trauma here's what I mean by it and here's what I don't mean by it.

[00:09:40]Literally the word means [music] wound.

[00:09:43]So trauma is a wound. It comes from a Greek word for wound or wounding. So trauma is a wound.

[00:09:50]Obviously people can suffer physical wounds or they can sustain emotional psychological wounds.

[00:10:00]And in this case, we're talking about the emotional, psychological wounds. Trauma is not only a wound. Trauma is also a wound that hasn't healed.

[00:10:12]If you were wounded, and if the wound heals, well, that's perfectly okay. So, in this case, we're talking about unhealed wounds that so many of us still carry and they have all kinds of impacts in our lives.

[00:10:29]Understanding that trauma means the wound. It also means that trauma is not what happened to you.

[00:10:39]Trauma is what happened inside you as a result of what happened to you.

[00:10:46]So some people use the word trauma as the abuse that they were subjected to as children, physical, sexual, emotional. I'll be talking about that more later. Or they might think of the word trauma as something terrible that happened to their family as a result of war. Well, those are the traumatic events. Those are the traumatic happenings.

[00:11:14]So there's the traumatic event, but that's not the same as the trauma. The trauma is what happened inside you. What wound did you sustain as a result of the traumatic events?

[00:11:26]So by saying that the abuse wasn't a trauma. I'm not trivializing trivializing the impact of that event.

[00:11:35]I'm just saying that was the cause, but the effect is what the trauma is. So the blow on the head just to give you one example is not the trauma. The trauma is the concussion and the symptoms like the dizziness, forgetfulness, imbalance, whatever may follow from that concussion. So that concussion is the actual trauma.

[00:12:03]That's an important distinction and it's essential for healing because if we think that trauma is what happened to me at age one or to you at age four or five, then it's over. It's finished. There's nothing you can do about it. It will never not have happened.

[00:12:27]I will never not have been a Jewish infant under Nazi occupation in Hungary 1944 45.

[00:12:38]I can't change that past. But if the trauma is the wound, the emotional imprint that I've sustained that still is maybe still present in some ways. Well, that wound can be healed in the present.

[00:12:57]So, trauma is what's with you now. It's the wound that's still with you now.

[00:13:03]So, that's the first point.

[00:13:07]The second point is that not everything painful and stressful is traumatic.

[00:13:13]Everything traumatic is painful and stressful, but you can have pain and stress without being traumatized.

[00:13:21]And sometimes people don't understand that. So they say, you know, I went on a date and my partner didn't show up and I was traumatized.

[00:13:34]No, you weren't. You were disappointed and you had feelings of pain and maybe anger or believe that you were being rejected, but you weren't necessarily traumatized unless you sustained the wound that you'd be carrying for a long time.

[00:13:50]And for the most part those wounds are sustained fairly early in childhood.

[00:13:57]So again everything traumatic is painful and stressful but not every pain and not every stress is traumatic.

[00:14:09]Now if you look at the nature of wounds if you're going to use that wound metaphor then wounds can behave generally in two ways.

[00:14:22]One is they stay open unhealed and that means every time they're touched there's tremendous pain.

[00:14:32]So if you're touched on a part of your body that doesn't have a physical wound, you'll have no pain. But if you have a physical wound and somebody touches it, you'll have extreme pain.

[00:14:49]So where we're traumatized, we have these points of pain which is when they're touched.

[00:14:59]And again they can be touched in the case of the emotional trauma very much through words. For example, somebody says a word to you and if you have a wound there that's going to cause you a lot of pain.

[00:15:14]So that's one aspect of a wound is that open wounds, unhealed wounds are very sensitive areas where we have pain which we wouldn't have if the wound wasn't there.

[00:15:31]And throughout this master class, you'll be seeing examples of how that pain shows up and also how to heal the wounds.

[00:15:41]Now, the other characteristic of a wound is it can develop scar tissue.

[00:15:47]Well, scar tissue is good. It knits the flesh together.

[00:15:54]But scar tissue has certain characteristics that is also the way that trauma can affect you. So scar tissue is hard and you so you get hardened.

[00:16:16]You're not as vulnerable. So you're not as open [clears throat] as you would be if you hadn't been traumatized.

[00:16:24]So there's a hardness sometimes.

[00:16:28]The scar tissue doesn't feel.

[00:16:33]It doesn't have nerve endings in it.

[00:16:37]And so people who are automatized are very often incapable of feeling of what's really going on in them, what's really going on inside them.

[00:16:54]Scar tissue also doesn't grow like normal flesh grows throughout life and certainly throughout adolescence where we get traumatized, we tend to get stuck.

[00:17:11]So a lot of people who are traumatized they haven't grown be beyond the point of trauma which means effectively they're functioning like young children.

[00:17:24]They're functioning emotionally like young children. So when somebody says to you, "Grow up already."

[00:17:33]That doesn't sound very nice. But that might be pointing to something real.

[00:17:38]That might be pointing to a part of you that hasn't grown because it's scarred over there and you couldn't grow.

[00:17:48]You know, if my wife says to me, "Don't be such a baby."

[00:17:58]Well, I'm not particularly happy to hear that, but there's some truth in it. I may be functioning at that moment like a much younger human being because something in me got arrested in terms of development.

[00:18:13]And that's what I mean by trauma causing a scar that doesn't grow.

[00:18:28]How we can get traumatized is basically in two ways that I'll say more about later. But we can get wounded by things being done to us that shouldn't be done to any child such as physical or sexual or emotional abuse.

[00:18:52]This shouldn't happen to any child and there are more which I'll cover in our first exercise related to this lesson too.

[00:19:04]But the other ways children can get wounded is less obvious and sometimes harder for people to see.

[00:19:14]And that's not bad things done, not bad things happening to you that shouldn't have happened, but to good things that should have happened not happening. And what I mean by that is your needs not being met. Now children are born with needs and those needs are obviously physical nourishment, warmth, shelter, support, but we also have emotional needs that are wired into us.

[00:19:53]And human beings can be hurt not just if somebody does something physically or otherwise aggressive towards them, but also if they deprive them of their needs. So obviously we need oxygen to live. If anybody deprivives you of oxygen, they're they're hurting you. If they deprive you of food, they're hurting you.

[00:20:20]But children can also be wounded and hurted and hurt when their emotional needs are not um met not satisfied.

[00:20:32]And those are more difficult to remember because it's easier to remember what happened than what didn't happen.

[00:20:51]So that's [music] my overall understanding of what trauma is.

[00:20:57]Trauma has a number of impacts.

[00:21:01]Uh one of them is if somebody touches your wound, all of a sudden you're reacting as you did way back then.

[00:21:13]So it's hard for you to be in the present.

[00:21:18]And as an adult with full awareness, you might respond one way, but if a wounded part of you is touched and uh you get what we call triggered, then you're actually reacting to the past.

[00:21:37]Trauma limits what is called response flexibility.

[00:21:44]If something happens, response flexibility means that you can respond appropriately to the needs of the present moment. And you might have a number of choices. And that's what's called the response flexibility. You can be elastic in how you respond.

[00:22:10]When people are traumatized, they tend to lose response flexibility which is the part which is the function of the midfrontal port part of our cortex. So part of the job of the midfrontal cortex, the gray matter of our brain at the front of our brains is response flexibility.

[00:22:29]When people react from a place of trauma, the cortex goes offline and you react from a much more primitive, much more um defensive or aggressive uh part of your brain. So, trauma limits response flexibility.

[00:22:47]Trauma, as I mentioned in lesson one, tends to disconnect from our bodies.

[00:22:53]That's why so much of the teaching here is to reconnect and to be aware and even as I'm talking to you right now, be aware of what's happening in your body.

[00:23:03]Try and maintain that awareness.

[00:23:05]So trauma disconnects us from ourselves, which really actually is the greatest impact of trauma, that disconnection from the self.

[00:23:17]Trauma gives you a negative view of yourself. you tend to be ashamed of yourself. When people say you should be ashamed of yourself, that's very different from you didn't do something here that was right or you did something here that was wrong. Let's learn from it. Or even healthier remorse. If I let you down somehow, if I make it a promise and I didn't keep it. If inadvertently I hurt you somehow, I might have healthy remorse, but should I be ashamed of myself?

[00:23:59]Should I be ashamed of my very being?

[00:24:02]And trauma imposes on a lot of people a shame based view of themselves and they see themselves as flawed and damaged goods.

[00:24:15]And nobody is damaged goods as far as I'm concerned. But trauma makes you believe that you are.

[00:24:23]Trauma shapes your view of the world.

[00:24:27]Do you trust this world that it can provide you with support or are you fearful and suspicious?

[00:24:37]How do you feel about other people?

[00:24:39]Trauma affects all that.

[00:24:42]And of course, trauma finally is multigenerational.

[00:24:48]Didn't begin with anybody in particular.

[00:24:51]It's passed on from one generation to the next.

[00:24:55]People pass it on unwittingly. Parents pass it on without meaning to.

[00:25:01]And so blame, trauma imposes a lot of sense of blame either towards yourself or towards others.

[00:25:15]And really when you understand the impersonal multigenerational nature of trauma, you realize that there's nobody left to blame. And in the first lesson I read you a poem by Hafi the I think 13th or 12th century Sufi Persian poet. I'll read you another one uh about blame.

[00:25:39]This is hi and blame. He says blame keeps the sad game going.

[00:25:46]The sad game.

[00:25:48]It keeps stealing all your wealth.

[00:25:52]giving it to an imbecile with no financial skills.

[00:25:57]Dear one, wise up. So he calls blame not sad game. And we impose that blame as a result of trauma on ourselves and on others.

[00:26:10]The final thing I'll say about trauma here is there's a wisdom in it. The wisdom shows up in two ways. One is that very often the traumatic imprint is actually an adaptation.

[00:26:29]I mentioned this bracelet in my first lesson and I mentioned that I was given it in Haidoguay in northern British Columbia.

[00:26:41]When I gave that workshop, which is where this happened, for indigenous people who had been traumatized by colonialism, there was an elder that came up asking for help. And she was the very last person at this workshop to seek help and she said, "I'm so ashamed of myself." She was in her late 70s and she said, "I'm so ashamed of myself." I said, "Why?" She says, "Because I forgot my native language. I forgot my Haida language."

[00:27:15]I said, "What happened?" She said, "She was I was 5 years old. I was taken to the residential school. These are schools that the state in the church forced native kids to be enrolled in.

[00:27:31]And on the first day, she spoke her native tongue. She spoke her national language, Haido language and the teacher took a stick and beat her mercilessly.

[00:27:48]And she says, "Even now as an adult, when I try to learn my language, when I go to school, I can't remember the words and I'm so ashamed of myself."

[00:27:59]I said, "Okay, what would have happened to you if you hadn't forgotten your language?

[00:28:08]Because the natural impulse of the child is to ask for help and if help is not available then to run away.

[00:28:18]But could you have done either of that?

[00:28:20]Of course not.

[00:28:23]So therefore forgetting her language was the wisdom of the trauma. It was her adaptation. It's what saved her life.

[00:28:31]Cuz as a 5-year-old, she couldn't have kept herself from speaking her language.

[00:28:36]So she had to forget it. And the fear of it was instilled into her as an adaptation, but even as an adult, that fear kept her from learning her language.

[00:28:49]And then she was ashamed for not fighting back. And I said, "What would have happened if you fought back?

[00:28:57]There's no help. You couldn't run away.

[00:29:00]If you fought back, obviously you would have been grievously hurt. So not fighting back, freezing was the wisdom of her organism.

[00:29:12]There was an adaptation.

[00:29:16]That same freezing no longer works for her as an adult, but it did at the time.

[00:29:24]So in another lesson, I may say more about trauma as an adaptation.

[00:29:29]So that's the wisdom in the trauma. But there's another wisdom when we can learn from trauma. It can actually teach us so much. I don't recommend trauma as a teaching or as a learning, as a way of growth for anybody.

[00:29:45]I don't wish it on anybody, but once it's there, boy, can it teach us. And I'll finish this lesson by one of my favorite quotes from one of my favorite teachers.

[00:29:56]And he says, "Your conflicts, all the difficult things, the problematic situations in your life are not chance or haphazard. They're actually yours.

[00:30:08]They're specifically yours. Designed specifically for you by a part of you that loves you more than anything else.

[00:30:16]The part of you that loves you more than anything else has created roadblocks to lead you to yourself. You're not going to go in the right direction unless there's something pricking you on the side telling you look here this way.

[00:30:30]That part of you loves you so much that it doesn't want you to lose the chance.

[00:30:35]It will give you extreme it will go to extreme measures to wake you up. It will make you suffer greatly if you don't listen. What else can it do? That's its purpose.

[00:30:46]And what he's saying here is that the pain that we experience from trauma, the way that trauma stops us in our tracks is a way of our organism telling us that there's something to be learned here, that we're not going to we're not going in the right direction. Not this way, this way. So the other [music] wisdom of trauma is once it's there, it can teach us. So rather than just trying to get rid of its symptoms and and then pushing it away and suppressing it, let's use it as a teacher. It can be a powerful mentor to all of us.

[00:32:59]How did you feel? This is an extract of the of the healer master class that we talked about uh this week and uh I'm going to talk to you a little bit more about it. Uh but you know how how did you feel? Uh profoundly how beautiful that was. Um so awakening tears.

[00:33:21]Okay. Well that's nice to to see. Um you can see uh in this extract which is in the first lessons of the of the course that Gabar really poured his heart into into this master class. I mean it's very powerful. It's very crisp uh amazing emotional resonated with it.

[00:33:47]Uh powerful incredible resonates profound awake.

[00:33:55]enlightening. I can't uh read it. It's going too fast. But um I I also think uh it was an amazing one. And all the the master class is like this just because Gabar really worked uh really poured his heart into the course with uh his way of being so authentic um and trying to help as much as as he could. Um you know this allegorories about the scar tissue and uh everything in in this in this lesson is is wonderful. I'm going to show you. This was just the first extract. So, if you like that, I think you're gonna you're going to like this this whole evening because I'm going to show you I have more in store for you.

[00:34:45]I'm going to show you uh again a few a few lessons. Uh this was um a little bit more theoretical, but then uh there are some exercises and and so on. So, um I'm going to I'm going to show you that in in just a moment. Um just in between I'm going to take a few minutes to answer some questions about the about the program uh and show you a little bit the inside of uh of mentor show. Um there were a few questions about what's in the heel masterass. So I'm I'm going to start by by showing you um the the heel course and and really what's in it. Um so you can see ah no you cannot see uh here there I go you can see this is the the website um the mentor show website um here there are a lot of master classes uh but what I want to show you is is Gabbor's course so you you recognize the um the master class here uh we just saw one of the the extracts here um and so what's included in this in this course people ask um so the the first thing is it's the heel uh program so we we created this program um as a methodology a four-step methodology um to go uh towards healing and um it's comprised of four steps the first step is h to heal the pain and this is really the part of what we just saw which is the wisdom of trauma, right? It's it's how to um have trauma be your teacher and really understand uh his impact in in your life and how to use it to understand yourself. Um just so you know overall like there's about 61 lessons in the heel master class with about 29 hours of gabar. So, you know, if you liked this uh this uh this lesson, you're going to you're going to love it. Um because there's there's plenty of it. Um here we just saw this lesson right here. What is trauma release? So, this is the fourth lesson of the course. Um after a few exercises, a few meditations to get in the in in in the right mind space, then you get some uh self questionnaires. So here it's questionnaires that are built by Gabbor to diagnose your trauma and to really understand. Uh there's one questionnaire for small T trauma and one questionnaire for for big T trauma. Uh then there's the happy childhood exercise. It's it's also an amazing exercise. And then um a whole lesson about recognizing trauma in your life. Then there's the exercise about the impact and the event. The impact and the event is how to understand there. It's a concrete writing exercise. So there's different types of exercises in the master class.

[00:37:59]There's meditations uh led by Gabbor. There are some sumatic exercises. Then there are some writing exercises, right? So you take your healing diary, your notebook um and you write it. It's been proven there's a lot of scientific study about the benefits of writing for trauma healing. So that's why there's um dozens of writing exercises in this in this class. Uh and this is one of them. And and here the the goal of this this exercise is to map out um the the impact of trauma in your personality, in your relationships, in your character and uh I don't remember what what's the fourth one uh but in your um in your in your life in general.

[00:38:51]Um there are some lessons about uh how to understand your conflict between authenticity and attachment.

[00:38:58]um and so on and so forth. There's a whole part about addiction as well. We had a lot of questions on addiction and obviously Gabbor is a is a is a is a real expert on that. So here we have some um different exercises [clears throat] to build alternative coping mechan mechanism because obviously trauma is a huge factor of addiction and um Gabbor built some tools that you can use um to have some alternative coping mechanisms.

[00:39:32]Um the E part is the most important part. You see there's 20 lessons and here it's to empower yourself to heal.

[00:39:40]So here you get strategies to heal um concrete exercises. The first one is how to deal with triggers and self-destructing uh behavior. Um I think I'm going to show a bit of this uh later. Um but this is one of the best lessons. It's a bit long uh but people really love it. You can see here uh so powerful to see this. It opened my eyes how we are programmed by a childhood trauma in Marvel very good techniques with the emergency kit. Thank you. Thank you. This is brilliant. Um wow, so powerful and so on. So you can see all the all the all the comments here. The demonstration of the exercise opened my heart to so many new possibilities.

[00:40:27]Thanks you Helen and Victory for being open and sharing your feelings. So this is another thing that's important here is maybe I'll show you later but um [clears throat] another thing that's included in this master class is I think something that is very unique um and it's it's simply that we brought some participants uh during the the the shooting and you can see Gabbor in action with those participants right and and Gab Gabbor, it was my introduction before. Gabbor has a mesmerizing way of really cutting through the noise and really going down very deep into the core of a of um the inside of of a person. And this this uh live consultations that you that you get there's there's about 10 of them. Um, this is meant to be contagious for you and we have chosen people who you can identify with and you'll see that there are some really touching moments of realization. Um, and uh, I think this is very unique because Gabar sometimes does this in seminars and so on, but you know, if you would want to see this, you would have to travel. You would have to pay potentially thousands of of dollars to be able to see this. Uh, and here, well, you get it in the masterass. Um, by the way, I see a lot of questions about the course and the masterass and so on. I'm I'm going to try to answer all of those. So you can uh you can keep keep shooting. Uh I'll I'll sort of like um answer a little bit and then show you some extracts and so on so that everyone can uh can get a little bit out of this this session tonight. Um so yeah, these live participants I think it's it's is really an amazing uh part of the of the course. Um, [clears throat] so I'm just gonna keep going in the empower yourself to heal. Uh, here there are some the upset exercise emergency kit. I'm going to show you some parts of the emergency kit later. Um, but there are amazing things. Message in the bottle, how to use music, um, how to speak to your heart. Um, and then there are some routines as well. So there's a daily practice, something that you do every day. There's a weekly practice. And by the way, these things, they're not some things that are random. There are some things that um Gabar uses for himself.

[00:43:15]Right? So this is this is why it's it's so powerful because, you know, as as was my introduction, you know, Gabar had to to use those things and to make them up for for himself. Um, for example, daily practice. Uh, the Oh, I'm not showing my screen anymore. There you go. Uh, daily practice strategies. So, you can see there's two large lessons on strategies and technique for healing trauma. This is the first part. And then there's the second part right here. Uh, practical approaches. Uh, this is really an amazing one as well. So, this is a good example here. My heart broke for Donna but joy that she's getting this experience with Gabbor. So this is an example of the live participant part because Donna uh is being um really searched through by by Gabbor and um and this is really a vehicle for strong transformation.

[00:44:18]Um this master class is phenomenal. The content is so relatable because Gabbor Mate shares about his own journey with trauma. So you can see these these are like just comments below the the master class. So you can see what what people say. It's it's quite uh incredible to to have this kind of of of impact and that it's really helping out a lot of people right here. Um what can I show you more? Um so this is the empower yourself to heal. Um the this is a very powerful lesson as well.

[00:44:56]Uh you know that Gabbor's method uh he's known for compassionate inquiry. Um how to use compassionate inquiry to heal from trauma and to treat with yourself.

[00:45:10]Um and here it's how to integrate compassionate inquiry into your life. So this is a powerful one as well. Um then you know once you've gone through all these exercises to to empower yourself to heal um there's a whole part on aligning with your relationships right so how to heal as a couple uh there's the meta practice in here that is amazing I saw a lot of questions on intergenerational trauma in the chat um so there's a whole this is the whole part on intergenerational trauma how to break the cycle with your um with your uh uh children and how to create factors of protection for your children as well.

[00:45:54]Um there's also a lesson on how to support a loved one who has experienced trauma when um when we had the the the we talked about you know thousands of people before making the master class and a lot of people asked us you know how can I help someone who uh has experienced trauma. So this is the lesson about it and uh the last part is lifelong healing. Um so how to create the routines and the habits for lifelong healing and different exercises.

[00:46:30]Actually the this last part is really amazing routines and and habits for lifelong healing. You can see actually here like there's some I know I will listen the whole master class again and again. Um I've learned so much from from this class. Uh this is where people u this will be my new routine. So much wisdom. It has opened my eyes. Um I found this lifeline late in life but it will have an effect on all my life anyway. [00:57:06]So, as I mentioned, uh trauma keeps showing up in our lives [music] and um in ways that we may think are normal and we may think actually just represent our personalities and who we are.

[00:57:22]Um so I'm going to go through a list that I prepared about some of the ways and this is not an exhaustive complete list by any means but some of the ways in which trauma can show up in your life which is to say that if you recognize these characteristics um or behaviors or these dynamics you might wonder if they're not the imprints of some traumatic experiences.

[00:57:56]So I [music] mentioned that trauma imposes a shame based view of yourself.

[00:58:02]So how do you feel about yourself?

[00:58:06]Are you ashamed of yourself a lot of the time? Do you feel guilty a lot of the time?

[00:58:15]Do you have a sense of inferiority? Do you compare yourself to other people?

[00:58:20]and do you feel inferior to them or [clears throat] do you think you're superior to them?

[00:58:30]In which case you can be president of the United States. Um but these are all signs of trauma both the comparison the sense of inferiority or the grandiosity of being superior.

[00:58:46]So how do you feel about yourself?

[00:58:49]That's the first question.

[00:58:52]The second one is do you get triggered?

[00:58:57]Now what does it mean to get triggered?

[00:59:00]I may come back to this question of triggering later in this uh workshop in this um master class. But just think of the metaphor of the trigger.

[00:59:13]It comes from weaponry.

[00:59:16]How big a part of the weapon is the trigger?

[00:59:20]This small.

[00:59:22]The only reason the trigger works is because there's ammunition there in an explosive charge. So when you get triggered, there's some explosive charge in you that goes that explosive charge is the traumatic imprint.

[00:59:40]So it's always very interesting to look at our triggers.

[00:59:48]Closely a light to that is reactivity, bursts of anger, bursts of rage that might erupt from you.

[01:00:02]Interruption means that there's something under cover that every once in a while just blows.

[01:00:09]It's like a kettle or a volcano for that matter. So, there's some fire inside that erupts every once in a while that could be [clears throat] the imprint of trauma.

[01:00:23]I'm not talking about healthy anger.

[01:00:26]I'm talking about outbursts of rage that are not related proportionately to what happens in the present behaviors. Trauma can show up in certain behaviors like repeated behaviors that are harmful to you like addictions or being in unhealthy relationships or not taking care of yourself physically and emotionally neglecting yourself.

[01:01:00]So trauma can show up in these behaviors.

[01:01:06]It can show up in relationships where you get fig frequently triggered by or you think you get triggered by your partner. In a later lesson, we'll be going deeply into relationships, but in your relationship, is there a repeated sense of resentment and reactivity?

[01:01:32]And uh do you get stuck in relationships that don't work for you?

[01:01:42]Next, are you burdened by a sense of hopelessness that certain things, certain qualities like joy or happiness or freedom or peace are not available to you and they never will be?

[01:02:09]Are you overtly optimistic?

[01:02:12]Are you one of these positive thinkers that everything is always okay and ticky to boo when they're not?

[01:02:26]So are you there either hopelessness or kind of a compulsive positivity? They can be both signs of trauma.

[01:02:38]Look at your personality because the personality is not who we are but it's who we think we are.

[01:02:51]Our personality is very often formed in response to needs not being met and the way we adapted. So for example, if you weren't given the attention that you needed just for existing, you might be consumed being very very attractive.

[01:03:12]What is you look at that word attractive? What are we trying to attract? We're trying to attack the tension so that we become consumed by being physically attractive and we have to check our bodies 10 times a day in the mirror.

[01:03:33]or attract attention by being loud or attract attention by being smart whatever we can use. But are we consumed by attracting other people's attention?

[01:03:48]If you didn't experience is being liked as a kid or being loved as a kid, you might become very charming and then you have a charming personality.

[01:04:04]If you weren't likedful who you were just because who you were and as you were, you might have become very one of these very nice people that's always nice to everybody and suppressing your real self cuz you have to be nice and everybody thinks what a nice person.

[01:04:24]That's just your personality.

[01:04:27]If you weren't made to feel important just for existing which every child needs, you might become a helper.

[01:04:39]Now you're going to be important and you might choose to be in one of the helping professions partly for good reasons, but partly also out of a need to be important. And I've certainly been through that. It was responsible for my workcoholism as a physician, his need to be important, which I didn't even realize I had.

[01:05:01]So, does your personality carry the imprints of needs that weren't met?

[01:05:10]I mentioned body image. What is your body image?

[01:05:14]Do you judge your body?

[01:05:16]Do you look at yourself critically?

[01:05:22]Once I went to a workshop at a facility in California and in the bathroom instead of mirrors there was a big sign that said, "You look great."

[01:05:33]But how many times do you check yourself in a mirror? Is this body part too big?

[01:05:36]Is it too small?

[01:05:39]What's your body image?

[01:05:43]Are you a perfectionist?

[01:05:46]How you feel about yourself when you don't do something perfectly?

[01:05:54]So perfectionism, are you what they call a control freak?

[01:06:01]Nobody's born a control freak.

[01:06:05]You try and control things cuz otherwise you're afraid that things aren't going to work.

[01:06:11]You learned that somewhere.

[01:06:15]Are you very critical and judgmental of other people?

[01:06:20]That can be a traumatic imprint.

[01:06:25]Do you face health challenges?

[01:06:29]I'll be saying more about that in further lessons. Mental health challenges, addictions, physical health problems. These are not always, but certainly very frequently and most of the time manifestations of trauma.

[01:06:50]What's your sense of motivation? Are you motivated? Do you have incentive? Do you have vitality? Or do you feel kind of listless a lot of the time, meaningless?

[01:07:05]Are you codependent?

[01:07:08]What does that mean? It means that you're dependent on somebody else to do well so you can feel okay about yourself.

[01:07:18]So you're dependent on somebody else. So typically addicted people may have codependent partners whose sense of well-being depends on that addicted person getting better.

[01:07:32]That's what a codependent is.

[01:07:35]And codependency shows up in so many ways.

[01:07:43]And are you consumed by concern with the past? What happened? And is your mind always on what happened or what should have happened or you always worried about the future or fantasizing either worried about the future or fantasizing about it?

[01:08:00]In other words, what's your relationship to the present moment?

[01:08:05]So these are all some of the imprints, some of the impacts in which trauma can show up in your life.

[01:08:14]And as you consider these questions, keep remembering to check in with your body.

[01:08:23]What are you experiencing in your body as you ponder these questions?

[01:08:36]So these uh questions I've just given you [music] or these um manifestations of trauma that I've just uh listed for you, they're kind of clues. So if you recognize them in yourself, you can start wondering where they came from and what's the imprint and what's the experience that led me to be that way.

[01:08:58]You don't have to find the answers right away, but it's worth asking the questions. And generally, I find that when people start asking them asking themselves those questions about where did these traits, behaviors, experiences come from, the answers will emerge.

[01:09:19]But I'll say one more thing here. I'm quoting a psychiatrist here. Um, his name is Mark Epstein. He wrote a book called the trauma of everyday life and he says it's not as important to find the cause of our traumatized feelings as it is to learn how to relate to them. So from the point of view of healing and I mentioned this when I define trauma for you the present is much more important than the past.

[01:09:47]It's much more important to see how does trauma show up in my life than to figure out exactly what happened. Now, usually, as you'll see ongoing in this [snorts] master class, it is not that difficult to discern where it all came from.

[01:10:08]If you go through those questionnaires, the AC questionnaires that we did in the previous lesson and then the small T questionnaire, you can pretty much find the sources of your traumas.

[01:10:23]But even if you can't, it's more important to recognize the imprints than to try and be a Sherlock Holmes detective about the causes.

[01:10:36]Trust your organism. When you're ready, those answers will emerge.

[01:10:43]Somebody I worked with in a previous exercise was 63 when they realized that they'd been traumatized.

[01:10:54]That's when she was ready. So, these answers will come up for you when you're ready.

[01:11:24]Heat. Heat.

[01:11:29][music] So this exercise [music] is related to the lesson we just completed about the impacts of trauma.

[01:12:24]It'll be a writing exercise. So take out your healing diary and ideally what you'll do is you'll have a double page here and you'll write something on one page and then something on the other side. So take four traumatic events one at a time from that list in the previous exercise about the advers charter experiences the big tea traumas or for the or the four or the small tea traumas and just take one of them and write it on one side of the page. You might write down lack of help. You might put down sexual abuse.

[01:13:13]You might put down my parent being an alcoholic.

[01:13:18]You might put down not [clears throat] being accepted. Just put that down.

[01:13:23]That's the traumatic event. You put that on the left hand side of the page.

[01:13:28]On the right side of the page, make four quadrants like divide the page into four parts.

[01:13:36]and you put down body, personality, behavior and relationships into each quadrant.

[01:13:55]And then what you will do is you look at that traumatic event small T or big T on the left hand side and on the right hand side under each quadrant write down how the effects are showing up in that area of your life.

[01:14:20]So how does it show up in your body?

[01:14:24]pain, tension, rigidity, whatever it is.

[01:14:30]How does it show up in your personality, in your sense of yourself?

[01:14:38]How does it show up in your behaviors?

[01:14:43]That's the third quadrant. And then how does it show up in your relationships?

[01:14:47]Relationships meaning relationship with your friends, fellow workers, you know, romantic partners, possibly with your family, even your children, whoever you're related to.

[01:15:10]And so you do that and do that repeatedly for four of those either small T or big T traumatic experiences.

[01:15:24]And take the time. And again, when you're doing this, here's the key. Be body aware.

[01:15:31]What are you experiencing inside yourself as you're contemplating those questions?

[01:15:50]How did you find that people?

[01:15:55]How did you find this these two lessons?

[01:15:57]Um, we're still in the first part of the master class, the hear the pain, where he's giving some concrete ways to understand the wisdom of of trauma. Um, I thought it was really mesmerizing to see and a very concrete way to to understand better which is the first step right here. The pain is the first section and um it's really the foundation of what comes after which is actually trying to trying to heal. Fantastic.

[01:16:38]A great exercise, hands-on, so deep, amazing, so beautifully explained. Wow. Freeing.

[01:16:46]Okay, that's that's nice to see. Now imagine having a whole program with these kind of lessons of Gabbor, a whole program that you get week by week, right? With Gabbor. [01:18:18]And after a while, you know, there's this this route where you can just walk there freely. And that's that's how habits are formed in the brain.

[01:18:30]But here's the thing. Many of the paths that you created in your brain in childhood were survival paths. Maybe it was for example shutting down or maybe it was like people pleasing, maybe it was anxiety, maybe it was hyper vigilance. Um, and those path they help you survive, right? But today they're not helping you anymore.

[01:19:00]And the problem is this. It's that the brain always prefers the easiest path even if it's not the healthiest one.

[01:19:10]Right? So healing means something that is very simple but quite challenging for a lot of us. It's that you have to take your macheti and and actually start cutting a new path through the vegetation.

[01:19:26]A path that is that is filled that you've never walked before. Right?

[01:19:32]And you have to go through that path enough times so that it's even easier than the first one. Right? And only then it will become your second nature. And this is when you will have healed.

[01:19:48]And look, it doesn't have to be a struggle. you know, you can you can be taken by the hand with very soft steps forward and with the help of Gabbor here who's, you know, taking you gently across that new that new path because that's exactly why we built the heel program. It's not to give you more ideas. It's to help you practice new path again and again until they become your second nature. And and you know maybe one day without even thinking about it you will walk this new path and one day this this new path will feel so natural that you'll forget the old one ever existed even because healing is when the healthier path becomes actually the easiest path.

And so here we deliberately created a program that has practices and a stepby-step program with concrete practices to try and then to integrate in your life. You know there's a daily practice, there's a weekly practice, there's the saying no exercise, there's like some exercises when some things happen in your life like for example when you can't say no. uh how to to um use you have this sort of like weapon with you to be able to confront these situations. Uh by the way, the emergency kit are some things that that Gabbor use for himself. You know, Gabbor sometimes get gets triggered. He he he tells me sometimes uh and it's it's real triggers. [01:36:41]Why do we do a course on trauma?

[01:36:44]Uh, we do it because there is so much trauma in people's lives. Not only in the newspapers, those are the public traumas, but in private homes.

[01:36:59]I never saw my parents engaged in physical violence.

[01:37:05]At least one of out of three kids does.

[01:37:10]It's a huge thing to see your parents fight, hurt each other, be worried about our lives. What does that do to you when people have been so preoccupied uh busy, upset, frightened, agitated that there was no room for you and you were just sitting there that had an impact in you? You dealt with that somehow.

[01:37:43]When you saw violence of any sort, if people betrayed you, touch it up, it becomes part of you.

[01:37:53]And our natural instinct is to go on with our lives and to say it's okay. I'm not the only one. I've heard worse stories and you plug on and you so well you should. We have to survive. But often times there's imprints. And when we hear people being violent, we get terrified as adults. Or we hear people getting into difficult situation and you go like some tension between people and you start clamping down or you become really upset. you become really angry or you see people in your work who get very upset and rather than activating your compassion and you're concerned about them, you feel like they're just weak, they're just stupid, we should just get rid of them. Just like if you do that, I will understand you. But I also know that this will probably come from somebody doing the same thing to you when you're growing up. say you don't count, you're not important, you just should go on. It helped you back then.

[01:39:06]The trouble is your frontal lobe telling you it doesn't matter. Doesn't go into that limbic brain. That limbic brain will continue to react as if the danger is happening and stir you up and send the stress hormones and the imunological hormones to your body and you are much more likely to get physically sick.

[01:39:33]You're much more likely to die earlier than the people around you. You're much more likely to get any number of symptoms like feeling depressed, burned out, get into trouble because you're always angry and aggressive and put people down. That will play pay to also you can blame those other people, but it will be a toll on your body and also on their body's physiology. So my question is how is trauma relevant for you?

[01:40:10]Huh? Who was there for you growing up?

[01:40:13]Who is there for you now?

[01:40:16]Where you get upset?

[01:40:18]What's that like for you? How upset do you get?

[01:40:23]Are the particular people or situations that really make you go a little nutty?

[01:40:32]Are you intimidated by various people?

[01:40:35]Are you nasty habitually by various people? What's Stella all about?

[01:40:44]They're just folks. How come you give them that importance or denigrate him so much?

[01:40:52]Interesting questions to ask. So, has there been trauma in your life?

[01:40:59]Have people broken your heart?

[01:41:02]Have people betrayed you? People stabbed you in the back?

[01:41:08]Have people double crossed you?

[01:41:11]You know what? Probably yes. Because humans are very complex creatures and every life is difficult.

[01:41:23]Even people's lives who look easy to you have the heartache, their pain, their betrayals. We all do.

[01:41:34]And that's part of our human common humanity. And we can split each other off. Or we can say, I know what you feel. We all are there.

[01:41:48]We all are part of the same complex universe which has love and care and which has hatred and destructiveness.

[01:41:57]It's just part of the whole deal. So the question is what role has trauma played in your life? To what degree are your relationships ending up in ways that are not right? Is it all their fault?

[01:42:17]Have we done something to provoke this to perpetuate this?

[01:42:23]Interesting questions.

[01:53:07]Um okay everyone. Well thank you everyone for this session. Now it's uh it's two hours we've been together. I hope you liked the the insight. Now just a little story before um we say goodbye and good night to each other. Um I was in Japan some years ago and I was you know visiting like a small temple and inside there was a ceramic bowl that you know had clearly been broken and and then repaired. But I saw something that was a bit strange for me. It's that the cracks of the of the bowl was not hidden. They were really filled with gold, right? And so I talked to the people there and you know asked why uh it was like this and I learned that this is actually a Japanese custom and a Japanese type of art that is called kintsugi.

[01:54:12]And so here here's how it works. Like when the ball breaks, they don't try to stick it back together and really make sure that we don't see the the fractures. Um instead they repair it with a type of lacquer mixed with some kind of gold powder. And so the cracks, they become some kind of luminous lines that run through the the object. And I thought this was really an amazing art because it's it's this philosophy that that is quite simple but also quite radical. It's that the break is not a defect to to erase and to hide. um it it just becomes a part of the object's uh life and the object's uh history, right?

[01:55:09]And so sometimes the cracks [snorts] can actually make it even more beautiful than it was before, right? And so why I'm telling you this, right? Um well, in a way, the teachings of Gabbor and the teaching of this master class is to do this, right? Um it's not to pretend that uh hardship never happened. It's to give you the tools to make these fractures of life integrated in your life, understood and then transformed into something stronger. So it comes back to how I started this this session which was that you know the trauma of Gabbor actually became his superpower which is to to see through people and to be able to help them. Um, and so just like in in the kinsugi, you know, the the cracks can become the lines of gold in in your own story, right?
