His name was Tsuto Yamaguchi, and his story defies every law of probability. August 6th, 1945. Yamaguchi is on a business trip in Hiroshima. He's walking outside near a shipyard when the first atomic bomb, little boy, detonates less than 2 m away. The sky turns white. He's thrown into a potato patch, his eard drums ruptured, his upper body covered in severe burns. Somehow, through the ash and the chaos, he crawls to safety. He spends the night in a bomb shelter, surrounded by the dying. The next day, wrapped in heavy bandages and shivering from fever, he drags himself to the station. He catches a train back to his hometown to be with his family in Nagasaki. On August 9th, he's back at work. His boss is calling him crazy, refusing to believe a single bomb could level an entire city. Yamaguchi is right in the middle of explaining the heat, the light, and the pressure when suddenly the room lights up with a blinding white flash. Fat Man, the second atomic bomb, hits Nagasaki. The shock wave blows his bandages off and shatters the office windows. For the second time in 3 days, Yamaguchi is dangerously close to the blast. And for the second time, he survives. He didn't just live through the war. He lived to be 93 years old. Yamaguchi became a voice for peace, a living reminder of the horrors of nuclear war.
