Elite tight ends in college football combine exceptional athletic traits (straight-line speed, explosive running ability) with strong run-blocking skills to maximize their impact on the field; Mason Oglesby exemplifies this by being a 6'4, 225-pound athlete who averaged 20 yards per catch while demonstrating the ability to out-run defensive backs and finish blocks through the whistle, making him a versatile offensive weapon who can contribute early in his college career.

ELITE: 4-STAR MASON OGLESBY COMMITS to Kansas Jayhawks Football Over Ohio State Buckeyes & Indiana追加:
KU just landed one of the best commits of the Lance Light pulled era. Let's break down Mason Oglesby.
>> You are Locked on Jay-Hawks, your daily podcast on the Kansas Jay-Hawks, part of the Locked On Network, your team every day.
>> What's up? Derek Johnson here with Locked On Jay-Hawks. We'll get into Mason Ogulby's impact on the class of 2027 in the future tight end room for Kansas. We'll get to his scouting report and we'll start right here with the news that Kansas has landed a four-star tight end in Mason Oglesby. Uh it is not um you know overblowing it to say this is one of the biggest commits of the Lance Light era. Now can you retain that commitment? Can you keep him through all the way to signing day and get him on campus? That'll be kind of the big question now for KU. But obviously this is a first great step. So Mason Ogulby is a tight end from New Palestine, Indiana. He is a four-star recruit.
Chose KU over a pretty awesome list of different schools. You have national champion, defending national champion, I should say, Indiana. You have consistent blueb blood Ohio State. And then you have Bill Bichc's North Carolina team.
Those are the schools that he chooses Kansas over in the end. And um he is an 89 rated three star at 247 sports. He is a fourstar on three which has him as a top 20 tight end and a top 400 player overall in the class. On the 247 composite he also fits the bill of both.
He is a fourstar and a top 400 player in the class on the 247 composite as well.
And you know talking about like how this is one of their better commits they've had. Obviously, um you think of like DJ Warner and and you know, Dak Brinkley and stuff of of the highest rated guys during the light era. Well, um he becomes KU's highest rated commit of this class on 247 sports, right? He becomes the top guy among now six commits in the class of 2027 for KU.
Interestingly enough, five of the six come on the offensive side of the football for KU. He's also the first tight end edition for Kansas and they've really been rolling lately. This is their fourth edition since just May 3rd alone. So, they're really on a hot streak right now on the recruiting trail. But the only players who have been rated higher by the 247 composite than what Oglesby is right now. Kaden Snder, who you just brought in this past class as an offensive tackle. We'll wait and see what his game develops into. DJ Warner, who we never really got to see that develop at Kansas. We'll see what his game develops into elsewhere. Austin Alexander, who was starting as a red shirt freshman and you would hope takes a big leap this year into his red shirt sophomore season. Those are the only guys on the 247 composite. So legitimately, this is one of the biggest commits that KU has gotten during the Lance Light era. Plus, you add to it that the way that KU uses tight ends, like this is somebody who would get a lot of usage uh in the KU offense. So, uh, let's continue on with the scouting report on Ogulby and, uh, what to look at in the future tight end room for Kansas.

All right. So, Mason Oglesby is a 6'4, 225B athlete. I say athlete because he plays all over the field, but being recruited and the intention is for KU to bring him in as a tight end here. But obviously has, you know, very good size. um his very good athleticism, which we'll get to here. Uh the stats this past season, he had 32 catches for 629 yards and eight touchdowns in addition to adding some of his defensive stats. Like those are really good numbers for I mean a tight end averaging like 20 yards a catch is pretty incredible. He was uh named an all state pick as you would imagine in the state of Indiana. He has awesome straight line speed. I mean, there there's highlights of him like catching seam routes and then out running DBs or just out running DBs in general, and that's coming from the tight end position. Um, they even had plays where like he lined up as a running back or took a jet sweep as a a tight end or receiver in motion. So, like if that doesn't show you how good of an athlete and a runner that he is for this position, I don't know what would. Uh but then yeah, size-wise, athletically, like he's going to go to KU and still be a plus athlete um compared to other KU players and Big 12 players at the collegiate level. So, you can only imagine what he's doing, you know, at the high school level, right?
Uh really finishes run blocks through the whistle. That was something that, you know, cuz at the end of the day, like the receiving stuff, the highlight stuff, the big plays, that's nice and that's going to enable you to do some fun things than what this Kansas offense has been during the Lance Light era. But what's going to really get you on the field and maintain you on the field is your run blocking ability. And he showed a nice bit of kind of nastiness, like I said, to kind of finish those run blocks through the whistle. That'll get you on the field and that'll get you on the field early in a KU and Andy Kotel Nikki offense. Right now, on the highlights, this could just be that, you know, you're not watching a full game tape on it, but like not seeing a huge diversification of like the routes that are being run. Um I I don't know if he has the best footwork or agility yet. So that'll be something that you're kind of looking to work on at KU. I'd say he's more of an explosive runner than an agile runner, if that makes sense. Like more explosive, can go straight line. He he's not like the shiftiest guy in the world. Um but he's an awesome blend of a player who looks like a wide receiver or a running back in the passing game while being 6'4 and then also being a tenacious blocker who wants to finish the block. Like I I think from just a pure talent standpoint, he would probably be the most talented tight end that this staff has had or acquired in their time at Kansas. I mean, Mason Fairchild was the most productive tight end, but this kid's more talented than Mason Fairchild. And obviously, you got to live up to the talent, too, right?
And and have everything come together with the talent, but just from a talent standpoint, I think he would be the most talented tight end that Lance Light and Andy Cotelniki and staff would have at KU. And that's already been a position that they've had success with. Like again, Mason Fairchild was a second team all Big 12 tight end. Jared Casey was a first team all Big 12 uh fullback by playing kind of an Hback moving tight end role. They use their tight Deshan Hanukkah was having a great start to the year before his injury. Bowden Grone had, you know, really picked up for uh where he left off when he was gone.
Carson Brun looks like he has a bright future. So like point being KU uses their tight ends a lot more than a lot of other teams. And it's not just that they use them, they use multiple. So it it gives you a chance to get on the field earlier, but it also gives you an opportunity to be a big playmaker in the offense. And so I think this makes sense for both parties. And if you're Mason Oglesby, like you want to get on the field earlier and you want to be featured in an offense, like this is kind of a perfect place to wind up. And uh I think it, you know, you never know in today's day and age like h how's everything going to work out and you know, does a player stick around at his school and everything and you hope those are the case. Um, but if he does stick around in Kansas, like this feels like a player that's going to be like an all Big 12 like matchup nightmare week in and week out for KU. All right, let's get to that future tight end room for Kansas. What it looks like for 2026 and beyond. This is locked on Jay-Hawks.

We'll have another KU baseball recap for uh whatever happens in their semi-final game. Check out our KU baseball quarterfinal recap as well. All right, 2026 tight end room looks like this for KU. Carson Brun uh as a red shirt sophomore. You've got a couple transfers in as red shirt seniors and Carter Moses and Jaylen Butler from smaller schools.
One at the FCS level, one at the group of five level. Leighton Cure back for his third season in the program, the former Forte State transfer. He'll be a red shirt senior. That makes up your top four in some order. And so you'll notice as I'm going through that, then you have two more tight ends, uh, Kevin Sullivan, Jack, who you both brought in as freshman who seem to have promising futures. But Moses Cure Butler, those are all guys that I mentioned being red shirt seniors to where not only are they seniors, but when you say the red shirt part, the reason that becomes important is because if we do move to this five and five rule, they'll still be in their final year of college. And what that means is that you're going to have a lot of opportunity, snaps, reps, um just up for grabs for who's going to be the the future tight. So like the expectation would be to me Carson Brunes your starter in 2026 and 2027. But we know KU will play a lot of two tight end sets. We know KU will even play some three tight end sets. So if you can get into the top three, you're going to get on the field. And I honestly with how good Oglesby I think is, I would not rule out like what if he could be the third tight end his first year and get on the field? What if he could be the second tight end and get on the field uh come 2027, you know? And that would just kind of come down to okay with Sullivan and UTS, how do they develop this year?
How comfortable do they get the offense?
Does that give them the leg up on a guy coming in uh here in Ogalsby who will be a higher rated recruit but will be one year younger in class than those guys?
But that would be the open competition and then I'm sure KU would add somebody via like the transfer portal to add to the room. But like honestly you don't you're probably just looking to add like one veteran to the room at that point because then you'd have a red shirt Junior Brun you'd have Sullivan and UTOS competing. You'd have Oglesby competing and then if you had one transfer portal guy to be like a top three guy then one of those you know players the the young guys you're bringing in from the high school ranks can be part of the top three as well. Um, so point being he can get on the field early and you know I I would imagine for KU there will be some sort of attrition eventually down the line whether it's 2028 or 2029 with you know because that's a lot of talented players that you have that are around the same age that maybe they go hey I'm going to transfer look for something else but you're stacking some talent there in a room that we know Andy Cotel Nikki will use to its fullest. All right that'll do it for this episode of Locked on Jay-Hawks. You can find our show anywhere you get your podcast, including on our YouTube page, where you can like and subscribe to the show.
