Saint Bede the Venerable — Doctor of the Church

[00:00:00]In the kingdom of Northumbria, in the year 673, a boy was born on the lands of a Benedictine monastery.

[00:00:10]At 7 years old, his family handed him over to the Abbey at Wearmouth-Jarrow [music] to be raised by monks.

[00:00:21]He lived there until the day he died, 62 years >> [music] >> in one small monastery on the cold edge of the known world.

[00:00:38]He wrote on scripture, on the saints, on grammar, on astronomy, on the measurement of time.

[00:00:47]>> [music] >> He is the reason we still date history from the birth of Christ, Anno Domini, because he was the one who popularized the system.

[00:01:00]He wrote the Ecclesiastical History of the English People, the book that made an English nation possible.

[00:01:09]But, the work that mattered most to him was the commentaries on scripture.

[00:01:14]He wanted his monks to know [music] what the word of God meant.

[00:01:20]On the eve of the Ascension >> [music] >> in the year 735, he was finishing a translation of John's Gospel into English.

[00:01:30]He dictated the last verse to his scribe. [music] The scribe said, "Master, it is done."

[00:01:39]Bede answered, "It is well.

[00:01:42]You have spoken the truth."

[00:01:45]Then, he chanted the Gloria and died.

[00:01:50]Pope Leo the 13th declared him a doctor of the church in 1899, the only Englishman ever to bear that title.
