Zero sum bias is a cognitive tendency where people believe that someone else's success means their own loss, assuming there's only a fixed amount of success, money, or happiness to go around; however, most modern situations are not zero-sum, and recognizing this can help overcome jealousy, hoarding behaviors, and missed opportunities for collaboration.

Your Brain Thinks Success Is Zero-Sum (It's Not)Ajouté :
Did you know your brain is wired to believe that if someone else wins, you must lose? It's called zero sum bias.
Your mind automatically assumes there's only so much success, money, or happiness to go around. So when others get more, there's less for you.
Researchers found people actually opposed trade deals that would help both countries because they couldn't accept that both sides could win. Employees turned down knowledge sharing sessions, thinking that teaching others would somehow make them less valuable. This made sense thousands of years ago when food and shelter were genuinely limited.
But now it's sabotaging us. You see it everywhere. People get jealous when friends succeed. Politicians act like helping the other party means betraying their own. Co-workers hoard information instead of collaborating. But here's the thing. Most modern situations aren't zero sum. When your friend gets promoted, it doesn't block your promotion. When another country prospers, it creates more opportunities for trade. Next time you feel threatened by someone else's success, ask yourself, is this actually taking something away from me, or is my brain just stuck in scarcity mode?
