The rolling stone doors, each one carved from a single block and fitted into curved channels, could seal a level entirely from below. They were operable only from the inside. Then in 1923, the population exchange between Greece and Turkey displaced the Capidosian Greek community that had maintained continuous knowledge of these underground spaces for generations.
