[00:00:05]>> [laughter] >> Meet the legendary NASA AD-1, one of the weirdest aircraft ever built by NASA. At first glance, it looks broken. One wing points forward, the other backward. But this bizarre design had a genius purpose.

[00:00:22]>> [laughter] >> The AD-1 used something called an oblique wing. As the aircraft sped up, the entire wing could rotate sideways up to 60°.

[00:00:32]Why? Because engineers believed it could dramatically reduce drag at high speeds, making future jets faster [music] and far more fuel-efficient.

[00:00:42]And yes, it actually flew. Between 1979 [music] and 1982, NASA test pilots pushed this strange machine through dozens of flights. The aircraft handled surprisingly well at low wing angles, but at extreme angles, things got [music] very unstable.

[00:01:01]Pilots reported intense shaking and difficult controls, especially at higher speeds. Still, the AD-1 proved the radical concept was possible.
