Former South African intelligence chief Arthur Fraser alleged that President Cyril Ramaphosa offered him R50 million to withdraw the Phala Phala case, which exposed allegations of corruption involving hidden millions of dollars at Ramaphosa's farm; this scandal nearly destroyed Ramaphosa's presidency in 2022 and reopened debates about political corruption and factionalism within the ANC.

Arthur Fraser EXPOSED Cyril Ramaphosa for OFFERING him R50 million to withdraw the Phala Phala case.Added:
Shortly after you opened the palapala case, you were approached and offered a whole lot of money. That's true. It's about 50 million.
Plus. 50 million plus. No, it was 50 million and there was additional to drop the case.
Tell us about it. How did it happen?
Okay, you know, [clears throat] um that happened on the 15th of June Yes.
>> 2022. Yes. Today, we woke up to the breaking news former spy boss Arthur Fraser is making another shocking allegation about the palapala scandal.
Fraser says after he opened a criminal case against President Cyril Ramaphosa in June 2022, Cyril Ramaphosa himself approached him and offered him a massive 50 million rands to withdraw the case and make the scandal disappear.
According to Fraser, he refused the money. He claims that after refusing the alleged offer, his life was suddenly in danger and he feared being targeted.
Reports say the alleged offer supposedly came from a Cape Town underworld figure, although these allegations have never been tested in court publicly. But many South Africans who are asking themselves, who exactly is Arthur Fraser? And why is he such an important figure in this entire palapala saga? I I go home next Saturday. It's a Saturday. I I go to the president's house someday.
As you would have realized today, I'm punctual about time.
>> No, I know. I know. I know. I know.
>> On time. I know. I know that. Yeah. So, I get there at 7:00.
And uh as we're walking in, uh he greets me cordially, but before we're sitting, he says, "You You know, Commissioner, I want to start with the DJ interview yesterday."
>> Yesterday. Mhm. And I realized, oh, you this president he at least you have the decency to sit me down >> just to sit and listen to me.
>> [clears throat] >> Uh so, he says, "No, you know, um I'm under pressure. I need you to resign, and that's what I'm here to ask you."
Pressure from who? Because he's the president of the country.
>> Yeah, no, I'll get to I'll explain. I'll take you through if you don't mind.
>> Okay.
So, I I ask him I firstly said, "You know, I can't resign." I told him, "No," I said, "Mr. President, let me go back where I ended with the DG."
"DG has got You've got access to report that vindicates me." Yes. "So, [clears throat] you and me know that this matter is not what it is."
>> Yes. It's just been twisted, yeah.
>> Yeah, and I understand it's politics.
At [clears throat] least we understand the truth. So, I don't think I can deal with the noise.
Continue, I can deal with the noise.
He he then states to me that, "You know, um uh he's getting pressure from the DA." From the DA?
>> From the DA. To fire you? To fire me.
And he's the president of the ANC in the country.
You must know what he says after this.
>> Okay, I'm listening. So, he says he's under pressure from the He says, "I said understand, that's political noise, Mr. President."
He says, "No, but you are a liability to the ANC."
Commissioner.
Hey.
Liability in what way?
>> Liability. In what way?
>> It is the first time that I mean, let alone a president of the ANC.
It's the first time somebody say I'm a liability to government. He says, "You're a liability to the ANC. You are a liability to government. You are a liability to me."
And I look at this my ANC president and I say, "Oh."
And I then say him, "So, Mr. President, is this how deep factionalism has gone in the ANC?" Mhm. Because I remember I don't see myself as a liability.
>> as a factional I'm I'm there as a public servant.
>> Mhm.
>> [clears throat] >> deployed by our movement at at at least. So, I I I I say, "You So, this is how deep?" He says, "Yes." Mhm. So, you mean that was done based on factionalism, not on you being [clears throat] a really a liability, so to speak.
>> Yeah. So, I I then tell him, "But, you know, Mr. President." He said, "But, you helped in this at at Nasrec." 2017. Mhm. Yes.
So, I told him, "Mr. President, do you think you'd be president if I helped at the December Nasrec? Because I don't think so."
I know. And then there was a pause, silence, pause, silence. Arthur Fraser is not just an ordinary politician or activist. He is a former intelligence boss, former head of the State Security Agency, and former Correctional Services Commissioner. He was once one of the most powerful intelligence figures in South Africa and was closely linked to former President Jacob Zuma. Fraser became the man who blew open the entire Phala Phala scandal in June 2022. Before Fraser opened the criminal case, many South Africans did not even know about the robbery that happened at Ramaphosa's Phala Phala farm in Limpopo back in February 2020. In his criminal complaint, Fraser accused Ramaphosa of serious wrongdoing. He alleged that millions of US dollars were hidden inside furniture at the farm and that after the money was stolen, there was an alleged cover-up instead of a proper police investigation. Fraser claimed suspects were secretly tracked down, interrogated, and pressured outside normal legal processes. Ramaphosa denied wrongdoing from the beginning. The presidency admitted that a robbery happened at the farm, but said the money came from legal game sales and denied criminal conduct. I have never stolen money from anywhere. But the political damage was already done. The Phala Phala scandal nearly destroyed Ramaphosa's presidency in 2022.
Opposition parties like the Economic Freedom Fighters and African Transformation Movement pushed for impeachment proceedings against him. And now the scandal is returning to the spotlight again after the Constitutional Court ruled that Parliament acted unlawfully when it blocked the Section 89 impeachment process linked to Phala Phala. That judgment has reopened debate about whether Ramaphosa was protected politically. What makes Fraser's latest allegations so explosive is that it creates an image of powerful forces allegedly trying to bury one of the biggest political scandals in democratic South Africa. If his claims are true, then somebody allegedly believed the Phala Phala case was dangerous enough to offer 50 million rands just to silence him. But people also question Fraser's own credibility. Remember, Arthur Fraser himself has been involved in several controversies over the years, including the controversial medical parole given to Jacob Zuma and allegations raised during the Zondo Commission. So South Africans are divided. Some believe Fraser exposed corruption at the highest level. Others believe he is part of political factional battles inside the ANC. But one thing is certain, years later, Phala Phala still refuses to die.
And every new revelation keeps pulling South Africa deeper into one of the most controversial political scandals in recent history.
