What's That Ruin?! Ep.1

[00:00:11]I'm here with a cup of tea.

[00:00:14]The window is open. There is a lovely summer breeze blowing in.

[00:00:17]And I've decided to go into my archives and pull some footage that I haven't used yet for one of my history videos.

[00:00:26]And I can't remember exactly where this was in Scotland, but it's somewhere outside of Glasgow. I don't know what this ruin was, but the point of this video is that we're going to try and figure out its name and some of its story. So, the first thing I'm going to do is figure out where this was in Scotland, and then we're going to pull some maps and see if we figure out a name. Okay, so it's just northeast of Glasgow.

[00:01:01]And it's next to a place called Findon Burn. So, that wasn't too hard to remind myself where this ruin was.

[00:01:09]So, I'm just going to do a little Google here of Findon Burn.

[00:01:13]And it's a burn in Scotland that runs from northeast of the Earl's Seat, the highest point on the Campsie Fells.

[00:01:24]Okay, so the history of it. There was once a weaving factory on the burn at Hawkhead. I'm not sure if I'm pronouncing that correctly.

[00:01:33]And there was also once a print works.

[00:01:36]There were once seven illegal stills operating at the same time on the burn.

[00:01:52]So, an interesting history there. So, a lot of illegal spirits making. In Ireland, people made spirits that were called potcheen.

[00:02:01]People in the countryside wanted to make their own alcohol and um the people who have taken a drink of potcheen have lost days apparently. It's that lethal. And it used to be made from potatoes in Ireland. That still doesn't give us a name for this place or any history. So, we're going to have to look at some old maps to find the name first. So, I'm going to go on to the National Library of Scotland and look at their Ordnance Survey maps.

[00:02:31]So, let's browse all Ordnance Survey maps here.

[00:02:39]Okay, so I found where I was on the maps and where the ruin is.

[00:02:54]It's It's in a place called Now No Head or Now Head.

[00:03:01]And I'm just going to choose some different maps here.

[00:03:12]Okay, so here the 1800s, it's known as Glenside.

[00:03:23]Glenside, okay.

[00:03:26]Let's try another one.

[00:03:31]Hm.

[00:03:35]Glenside again.

[00:03:39]Glenside.

[00:03:42]Okay, so this house was definitely called Glenside.

[00:03:52]So, the area here is called Clachan of Campsie and this building was definitely called Glenside.

[00:04:00]So, maybe it was a farm, but let's do some digging online.

[00:04:04]Okay, so I've gone to the British Newspaper Archive and I've put in Glenside Campsie and I can confirm that Glenside was a farm.

[00:04:13]In 1908, it was up for rent after the passing of Mr. John Patton.

[00:04:18]When I scroll down here, I found the death of his wife 4 years later. Her name was Mary Patton and she died aged 91. Now, a few people lived at Glenside.

[00:04:31]There is a result here for Mr. Sam Fulton who was an artist because he has a picture on display of a fox terrier at the art exhibition at Lennoxtown in September of 1918.

[00:04:49]Um Another man who lived here was an Allan showing his Spanish and hen.

[00:05:00]Here in 1915, we have a Mr. Sangster.

[00:05:04]And he was the head gamekeeper on the Lennox Castle estate.

[00:05:09]So, very near to here is Lennox Castle and I'll put a few uh shots of Lennox Castle up.

[00:05:19]Let's go into this article for a look just out of interest.

[00:05:22]So, it says he has a son, a private William Sangster of the Royal Irish Fusiliers.

[00:05:29]He has been killed at the Dardanelles.

[00:05:36]And he himself was a gamekeeper in Ireland.

[00:05:40]So, further along, there is an article on Sam Fulton the artist and it says that he has actually passed away in 1941 on the 31st of May 1941.

[00:05:53]He took a lively interest in local affairs and was a prominent playing member of Campsie Glen Curling Club.

[00:06:01]It's very interesting. So, Sam Fulton passes away in 1941.

[00:06:06]And I'm just wondering is he the last person to live at Glenside?

[00:06:12]So, so going forward into the 1960s I found a few articles on a Mrs. Bain of Glenside in Campsie. So, I think this house was occupied into the '60s because after that there's nothing more.

[00:06:33]Now, it looks like this was abandoned way before the '60s.

[00:06:37]To me anyway, but maybe it was demolished to some degree, but if you know anything, let me know in the comments. And I think that's it for this one.
