And I threw it away because I thought I deserved more than I'd earned. I stood up. My legs felt weak. I should go. Wait. He reached out, his hand hovering in the air between us. Nothing about who he'd been or what he'd done or how he died. "I don't forgive you," I said out loud to the fresh dirt.

And I hope" my voice cracked, "I hope you know that I loved you even at the end, even when I hated what you'd done. You were still my son and I still loved you, and that's the part I can't forgive you for."
