When public officials engage in physical altercations during official proceedings, they may face formal accountability measures such as recall petitions and code of conduct violations, which can result in sanctions including removal from office. This case demonstrates how democratic systems provide mechanisms for citizens to hold elected representatives accountable for their behavior, even when such behavior occurs in official government settings.

Daybreak+ Thursday, May 21, 2026Added:
coming up right now on Daybreak Plus.
This was not a schoolyard. This was a city commission meeting, Hartford. I'll let you know what's going on here with this fight and why it may continue.
Also, we're going to tell you about an accident involving an ambulance transporting a patient. We'll explain how it ended up on its roof coming up.
>> Good morning. Welcome to Daybreak Plus.
It's Thursday. It's almost Friday.
>> Oh yes, that fight video, that tool gets your attention.
>> Oh my goodness. Yeah, >> that's how you settle things correctly, right?
>> It's the oldfashioned way. That's That's the best way to change someone's mind.
Yeah.
>> Capturing hearts.
>> Put them up.
>> Yeah.
>> One fist to cuff at a time.
>> Yeah.
>> Sometimes you just got to get things done, right?
>> Sure. Yeah. Why not?
>> You've been in a fight before?
>> Not for a long time, Matt.
>> I'm a lover, not a fighter.
>> I love it.
>> I think I'm Other than with my siblings.
>> Elementary school was my last >> physical fight. Yeah. Elementary.
>> Elementary school.
>> That's good.
>> You getting a lot of fights, Matt?
>> A lot. No.
>> Have you?
>> Yes.
>> Yes.
>> As a grown man.
>> There's been a couple.
>> No, as a I was in college, but I was a man.
>> Technically, >> he's defending my uh my future wife's honor.
>> Okay.
>> Okay.
>> So, we'll leave it at that. The words say he lost.
>> I think it's time to talk about the weather.
>> Uh, weather or not. That's what it says, doesn't it?
>> That's You're right. You know what? Fair enough.
>> You can talk about whatever you want.
>> No, let's talk about weather. Let's do >> Okay.
>> Beautiful.
>> Kirk Temple, thank you for sending the water.
>> Almost looks like a sunrise.
>> It does, >> but it's not.
>> Wrong direction, I guess.
>> Yeah. North Shores. I think this is Mona Lake. Beautiful lake. looking obviously westerly direction there. And uh thanks Kirk. I've never received a a picture from Kirk, but good job. We've seen many from Mike. Mike loves this vantage point. He always comes in with some spectacular. What's what's cool about when you when you see these pictures, you know, from the same vantage point from a photographer, what changes is just the sky pretty much. And of course the water, you know, a little more wave action. But we all know the iconic, you know, Grand Haven Pier. Interesting month.
Dry, >> real dry. And what's interesting is it's typically one of the wetest months in the calendar. We've only had what we're twothirds of the way through the month and only uh not even a half an inch of rain.
>> We had enough in April.
>> Yeah. Yeah. And March. March was wet, too.
>> But I actually have a couple brown spots in my yard, believe it or not.
>> I noticed that in the neighborhood.
>> I'm like, come on.
I haven't I refused to turn on the sprinkling system though.
>> We haven't turned ours on either yet.
>> Uhuh.
>> The kids were asking actually. It was warm enough the other day.
>> Oh, they wanted sprinklers. Like, sorry, guys. We got to We haven't done all that yet.
>> Yeah, not yet. They haven't turned them on yet. Uh, so we're running a little over two inches below average. So, after today, by the time it probably rains next, it'll be close to about two and a quarter, two and a half inches in many locations. And we do have some rain on the way. Uh taking a look at the latest, you know, camera views out there. Nice morning. It is a cool morning. You may even had the heater on the car on the way to work. There are a few clouds out there. Couple showers over in the in the Iowa area. The chance of rain today isn't zero. I'm going to put it about 20%. But it's it's going to fall out of a midle deck of clouds. It looks like that means a lot of it's going to evaporate. So if we see anything, it'll be just a couple sprinkles here and there. So, if you washed your car last night, it's guaranteed to go fall on your car today.
>> Clearly, >> that's how I think.
>> That's how it works.
>> And then tonight, another cool one.
Temperatures will drop down into the 40s >> and then tomorrow looks like increasing cloud scenario. We'll start out with some sunshine. We'll end the day with a fair amount of clouds, especially coming in from the south. And that's out of the next storm system, which will give us a chance of rain, especially Saturday morning. Now, I don't know if you recall, but yesterday all that yellow and oranges were right over us. Now, the forecast models are starting to shift the heavier rain east. Will that be a trend? Maybe. And there's actually one of the forecast models that keep us dry that just came in. It's not the one I usually put a lot of stock in, but but it's an interesting trend which may lead to drier conditions on Saturday. But right now, we're keeping the a solid chance of rain in for Saturday morning.
And then that system's going to depart.
What you see on Sunday is more scattered in in nature, not completely widespread.
So much of the day is going to be dry on Sunday. And then we'll end the weekend really nice on Monday, Memorial Day, lots of sunshine, and that's going to be uh the warmest day in the stretch.
So, we'll start out the weekend with temperatures mid60s and then we'll gradually improve into the upper 70s, close to 80 on Memorial Day.
I'm already I'm already thinking what I'm going to grill something, man. I don't know what I'm grilling.
>> Taste the barbecue.
>> That's right. And then some 80s >> Tuesday and Wednesday of next week. And I think that's going to be common place as we flip the calendar to the unofficial start to summer.
>> Really nice. Yeah. So mid70s are averages at that point. So easily I think some 80s into early June.
>> Uh so pretty nice. Next week is the last week for kids for my kids anyway for school.
>> Oh yeah.
>> So they're gonna >> their last day of school is going to be feel like summer.
>> Yeah. Kind of toasty. Kind of warm.
They'll wear shorts at school probably.
>> They don't they don't need warm weather for that.
>> Yeah. Right. What am I thinking?
>> They need 50 and they wear shorts pretty much.
>> 40.
>> Yeah. Shorts and a sweatshirt.
>> Uh great weekend for the zoo to debut.
>> Yeah.
>> Otter Palooa.
>> Otter Palooa. You know, there aren't that many otter puns.
>> It ought to be easier, >> right?
>> That's the only good one this morning.
>> I stole that from the morning.
>> Utterly ridiculous.
>> Yeah. Who goes to >> significant >> without checking out that exhibit?
>> I know.
>> That's like That's always top of mind when I when we had that. That's such cool. That's so cool.
>> This is a live look at the zoo right now.
Nice little open already.
>> I didn't think they opened until 9.
>> Wow. Maybe it's a VIP event.
>> Maybe if you're a seasoned ticket holder, you get early.
>> I'm a member. I don't remember getting any notice about this.
>> This is kind of busy for >> It's not open 8:00 in the morning.
>> Wow. It >> says closed.
>> There are four otterers over there right now.
>> Why are so many people there? This is supposed to be This is live. This is like the camera.
>> Yeah. I don't know, man. I mean, it looks like it's like in the middle of the day type thing.
>> Maybe it does. I'm confused. Maybe it does have something to do. I mean, I don't know. They like they have classes and school there. Maybe it's something with that.
>> Could be something.
>> That could be a field trip.
>> Well, the field trips, I don't know, but they have they actually have on-site programs.
>> Oh, yeah. You're right.
>> Um, >> yep.
>> So, maybe that's what it is. I don't know. It looks pretty happening at the zoo right now. Zoo is jumping.
>> So that's live, we think. And then this is video.
>> Yeah.
>> Uh Oh, they're so cute.
>> They are. The noises they make, too.
This >> They are just really cute.
>> They have room for five, but they're only four right now. So, there's room for one more.
>> There's always room for one more.
>> Bring it on.
>> That's why Teresa has four.
>> Car is full, actually.
Are you telling us something, >> Teresa?
>> Yes, I am. The car is full. That's It's over.
>> That's what I'm saying.
>> Um, yeah. Exciting stuff. Matt, you were saying your mom has randomly >> Yeah, we're having just out of the blue.
Um, we were having breakfast the other morning and at Lucy's.
>> Oh, yeah.
>> Yeah, >> it's a good spot.
>> A very good spot. And she's like, "You know what I want to do? I want to go to the zoo. Brad, if you power wash my house and my deck and my driveway. I'm like, that's great idea, Mom. She's She has two uh new knees. So, she wants to put She's ready to put them to work.
>> How's she doing?
>> Quite well. I mean, you hear these horror stories with these knee replacements. No, >> she's 83 and she had her first one like >> three years ago and one >> about half a year ago and she's doing excellent. Okay. It's amazing. Thank you.
>> Yeah.
>> Uh anyway, yeah. So, we're gonna go take a trip to the zoo. Yeah.
>> We learned something new about Matt today.
>> Yeah.
>> Little Matt trivia.
>> Little Matt trivia. When I was >> That was one of Matt's high school jobs.
>> Yeah. Yeah. I worked at uh Meyer Warehouse in Walker. Then on the weekends, I worked at Ryder Truck Rental washing trucks and fueling them. And I got my CDL license. And my third job was at the zoo >> doing >> camel rides selling tickets. And it was that was relaxing because it was fun to watch because uh the where where they had it at that point, I don't think it's the same place now, it was right across from the petting zoo. And so they had this um llama named Appy.
And that llama, why they had that llama in there, I have no idea, but it would spit on probably every third patron that come in there. You'd see the ears go back, you know, they start scratching its back and apparently it didn't like it. You just turn around and just ears back.
>> And you always knew when it was >> Oh, yeah. We would take bets like if a family came in, we would like, oh, I got the little kid.
Like, why is it this thing in there, you know? Anyway, plus I had a concession stand right by us and anytime I wanted, you know, a pop or ice cream, I probably gained 10, 20 pounds of I worked there.
>> The camels are by the prair are they prairie dogs? They're not prairie prairie dogs, but they >> Yeah.
>> Why can't I think of the name? They tunnel through the They have little tunnels. Mircats.
>> Oh.
>> Oh, okay.
>> Uh they're right across from the Mircats now.
>> I don't know where that is. Well, >> it's been so long since I've been there.
Yeah. It used to be, you know, where they had that like that tram system.
>> Yeah.
>> That's where the camera >> Vicular. Yes. Yes.
That's where they used to have it.
>> Okay. At the top or the bottom?
>> Top. No, no, no.
>> The bottom.
>> No, no, no. Yeah. Bottom.
>> Now that's kind of by the otter. The new home for the otter. Although it's often not open. In fact, it hasn't been open any of the last six times I've been to the zoo.
>> Oh, yeah.
>> Sorry. I don't know why I just did that.
Um, yeah. Vicular is always closed.
>> Yeah.
>> All right. Well, zoo day for Matt. Take pictures.
>> I'm not going yet.
>> You take your >> We will go. I I promise I will take pictures >> when it's warmer.
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah. Mama don't like >> Mama K don't like it cold.
>> She like it cold. Yeah. So, that tends to happen.
>> We have the rundown coming up. We keep talking about this video.
>> Yeah. It's unusual to see this.
>> Matt's doing the sound effects.
>> I think that's copyrighted.
>> Democracy in action.
>> Exactly. We'll be right back.
Welcome back to Daybreak Plus on a Thursday morning. And well, let's get to the rundown.
>> Let's do it. First story in the rundown is this fight which we have video of from Hartford City Hall or the administration building, wherever they had this commission meeting. Here's the video.
That's a city commissioner getting up >> and the guy in the black is John Spoola who's a voter in the city. And this looks like a schoolyard.
>> Looks like a schoolyard brawl. There had been some tension brewing between the two. Some things happening uh online and uh got out of hand as you can see for a little while. the chief of police uh stepped in there. The superintendent of public works also stepped in to help break things up, settle things down.
Both uh both of those men were briefly detained and then released.
>> We talked to John Spoola uh after this all happened.
>> I have every right to criticize whatever I see unfit that he's doing. If he likes it, that's fine. If he doesn't like it, that's fine. But so long as he's in that position, he's going to be held accountable by me and by every other taxpayer that wants an answer.
>> Okay. So Spoola said he's filed what's it called? A petition, a recall petition >> for the commissioner.
>> So that's one thing. But we looked at the code of conduct and ethics.
>> Yes. Uh, so I'm just looking at several sections right now because sometimes in a city like this, the only thing you can really do to get someone off of a board is a recall petition.
>> Recall, >> but in this case, their um, ordinance for their code of conduct and ethics is pretty specific. Um, they have a section on impartiality that a covered individual like a commissioner shall treat all members of the public with professional courtesy. uh impartiality, fairness and equality. So that's one. Uh professional standards, treat others with respect and in a professional and courteous manner in person or written communications.
Prof. Uh refrain from using profanities, insults, or other disparaging remarks regarding others. Prohibited media statements list cyber bullying, stalking or harassment, um or content that's profane, obscene, etc. The big thing though is section 8 which is sanctions for violations >> which includes reprimand censure termination of employment or appointment removal from office.
>> Removal from office. So we'll see what the next step is.
>> That's what we're following up on today in Hartford after. So this was Monday night that this happened, right?
>> Um we just have got the video.
>> Video was just released.
>> We also have video of an ambulance flipped over on US 131. This uh was in Wayland. A pickup truck actually hit the ambulance from behind. Investigators think that the pickup driver fell asleep uh at the wheel, ran into this ambulance which rolled over into a ditch.
>> So, the patient they were transporting to Grand Rapids, um other medics came in a helicopter and flew them to the hospital. We're still working to find out how much worse their injuries are after the crash or if it was similar uh and how that crash is going to affect their recovery.
>> And we should also point out the two paramedics who were in that ambulance uh were taken to the hospital non-lifethreatening injuries.
>> Our state house has okayed a property tax cut.
At issue though is the fact that it will eliminate five How much is it? 5 billion >> dollars in um tax revenue.
>> So they apparently cannot um implement these tax cuts without finding a way to replace the revenue, >> replace the money. So Democrats will uh are expected to fight this. Uh they've got the majority in the state senate. So we haven't heard the last of this story.
One way that um they have floated covering that is with um a tax on what's it called? Basically like a luxury tax and the house speaker has said that could be anything on the list includes newspaper publishing um rooc calls luxury planes. Like there's there's quite a few things on the list but that's that's um far from a reality.
It's still in a committee at this point.
So really what we're looking at next is the Senate where as George said, Democrats will likely fight it.
>> Yes, >> there's some old land, old military land in Grand Rapids that is now up for sale.
>> This is the former Navy and Marine Corps Reserve Center. It's on uh Monroe, two-story building there. It's been vacant for five years, up for sale now for $1.5 million. The city wanted to do something with this property a while back, but didn't end up being able to do anything. They're trying to reduce the military portfolio.
Looks like the building needs a lot of work.
>> So, whoever buys it have to invest a bit into it to make it into something profitable. That's up for sale if you have a cool one and a half million. Uh, also a few Senate candidates in Michigan disqualified from the ballot. That's right. Three candidates, a Democrat, Kim Thomas. Two Republicans, Ralph Reband and Bernardet Smith. Not enough signatures.
Uh they needed 15,000. They don't have enough signatures to be on the ballot.
It'll be up to the board of state um canvasers, that's the word, to make a final decision on whether they're on the ballot.
>> It's kind of happened a lot recently, right? signature is causing ballot issues for candidates >> in several elections.
>> We know things are pricey these days.
Gas, groceries.
Well, kids in Grand Rapids are learning gardening, and it's about more than offsetting the cost.
>> It's a way to help the community as well. We'll tell you all about it when we come back.
I pity the fool.
That's a little tease.
>> This a tease ahead.
>> That's a tease. A tease >> to the birthdays. Celebrity birthdays.
>> Not just a tease, but a Mr. Tease.
>> A tease. Mr. T. 74 years old.
>> Wow.
>> The Rocky first Rocky movie. Not first, but one of the Rocky movies.
>> One of the early ones.
>> And then the 18 was another one of his uh >> that was a good >> TV show, by the way.
>> Pity Fool.
>> Pity Fool. Uh Lisa Edelstein, 60 years old. If you've watched House, then you know her.
>> Actress from House. Happy birthday to you.
>> Done a lot of other things, but I think that's a pretty well-known one.
>> Tom Daly, the young Daily, >> Olympic diver, silver and bronze medal winner.
>> 32 years old today.
>> How about that?
>> Did we ever figure this out?
>> Goautate.
>> Yeah.
>> Goautate 46 singer. Somebody that I used to know >> has a few Grammys.
>> Look at that. Just >> just a few.
>> Just holding on to them.
>> No big deal.
>> Uh, okay. Also a singer. Different genre.
>> Cody Johnson, 39. By the way, >> coming to Van Andel Arena on the 29th of May.
>> There you go. That's next Friday.
>> Yeah.
>> Tickets are available.
>> Okay. I was just gonna ask George Snow.
>> At least it looked that way online.
>> On top of things. Ronald Eley.
>> Wow. This is This brings back memories.
The Eley Brothers singing group way back in the day.
>> That's old school. Yeah, that's classic.
>> I'm dating myself.
>> Did you buy yourself flowers? I can't help but think that whenever someone says they're dating themselves. It's so stupid.
>> It's the worst of the worst dad jokes.
>> That's That's my brain, though.
>> That's comes from living with your husband.
>> It does. Yeah. I have my own bad jokes.
Don't give my husband all the credit for my bad jokes.
>> For your bad jokes.
>> Uh, Judge Reinhold.
>> Oh, yeah.
>> 69 years old today.
>> Beverly Hills Cop. Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Stripes. He was in a lot.
>> Talk about going back.
>> Old school movies there.
69 years old. Happy birthday, Judge.
>> Happy birthday. Okay.
>> What do we have?
>> Gardening.
>> Oh, yeah.
>> This is cool, though. Kids in Grand Rapids are learning gardening, which I think it's an important skill and just great for them to see how we get our food and that's happening in Grand Rapids and it happens to coincide with prices going up.
>> Prices going up. People trying to save a little bit of money so they're they're doing some gardening.
>> My family was on Wick and I looked forward to those coupons we got um to go to the Fulton Street Market and get fresh produce. Um, so I had a passion for wanting that to be part of my teaching experience and getting kids um, excited about growing their own food uh, to make it more reasonable for their families.
>> When you learn to do it and you learn how to do it right, it's not that much time just waiting for it to grow and come out and watching it.
>> Great skill for them to have and just good. I think, you know, we go to the store and kids just think, "Oh, this is where things come from." I don't, you know, it's good to know where all of that actually comes from and what goes into growing it maybe and then seeing it. I don't know.
>> And that's a lifelong skill. You take that with you, >> expand their horizons a little bit.
>> When you get a house, you plant a garden.
>> My kids eat cucumbers.
It's maybe like some bell peppers for a couple of them. Okay.
>> It's hard to get them past. Do you Are your kids good eaters with vegetables and things?
>> Not great.
>> No.
>> Not great.
>> Like try to like dress things up a little bit.
>> Yeah. They're still at an age.
>> It's not what you think it is. Yesterday I cut up onions insanely small to try and hide them in the meat. And still, >> you're like, "Mommy, what are these?"
>> Yeah. Onions. Something weird in here.
Something weird is happening.
Uh, life has been busy lately. Oh yeah.
Last weekend, uh, my daughter was in a production of Susicle. She was a bird girl.
>> Bird girl.
>> Eighth grade production. Very nicely done.
>> Awesome.
>> Pretty good show.
>> She looks great.
>> Thank you.
>> She had fun.
>> She did have fun. It was good performance.
Spent two months getting ready for that.
>> Yeah.
>> They rehearsed every day after school for two months.
And they have a musical theater class in high school, right?
>> They do. She's signed up for theater for ninth grade next year. So, we'll see what they perform next year.
>> That'll be exciting.
>> Yeah.
>> My our daughters are similar ages, both going into high school, both involved in uh orchestra on the violin, and in musical theater. Yes.
>> They'd probably have a lot to talk about. They'd be great friends. Uh, we celebrated my grandpa weekly >> 97th birthday on Saturday last week.
>> Grandpa Weekly.
Now, where is he again?
>> Portage.
>> Portage.
>> Yep. He's lived in that house for Oops.
That's Here we go.
>> That's open heart surgery.
>> That's open heart surgery.
>> That's a separate story.
>> How did that get in there? Um, yeah, >> that's a good picture. Isn't that a great picture? It's not all of the Well, it's not even all of the great grandkids from my dad's part of the family. He has so many great grandkids, but my younger sister couldn't make it. But anyway, happy birthday, Grandpa Weekly.
>> Glad we got to celebrate with you. He got he got his ice cream. I got to bring you your ice cream.
>> That's right. I've got I will bring it tomorrow. I keep forgetting. Tomorrow you can have it for your long weekend.
>> All right.
>> Thanks for hanging out with us. And yes, we will see you tomorrow for a Friday show and have a great day.
