Kings borrowed from them. Entire crusades were bankrolled by Templar credit. At their peak, the Templars held properties across every Christian nation in Europe, ran dozens of fortresses in the Holy Land, and commanded a standing military force of perhaps 20,000 fighting men, including knights, sergeants, turcopoles, and support staff combined.
