Urban development can fragment wildlife habitats, but specially designed wildlife crossing infrastructure, such as the Kunpeng Trail No. 1 Bridge in Shenzhen, China, can restore ecological connectivity by providing safe passage for animals over busy highways, with over 90% of the structure designed for wildlife use and nighttime closures allowing animals to cross freely.

This bridge in China lets wildlife safely cross a busy highwayAdded:
In a city defined by growth and innovation, this bridge on top of a busy highway stands out because it wasn't built for cars. It was built for animals [music] to cross safely. In Shenzhen, [snorts] China, rapid development in the 1990s has split two mountains apart, cutting off natural routes for animals and isolating ecosystems. Now, the Xianggang Trail Number 1 Bridge, completed in late 2023, reconnects them, restoring a path between two habitats.
This is the pathway they built, and they put rocks so it's slippery and animals [music] don't use it as a place to stay, just to pass from mountain to mountain. The bridge closes at night for humans so animals can cross freely.
And that's when it comes to life. Most animals cross under the cover of darkness when the space is quieter and safer. And early monitoring, as you can see here, shows wildlife already returning. A bridge above a highway [music] quietly stitching nature back together in the middle of a growing city.
