There was nowhere to run. The coal they mined powered Soviet nuclear and space programs. Their suffering fueled the empire's greatest achievements. For 40 days, the prisoners fought back. They took control of the camp. They demanded basic human rights. The Soviets responded with mass executions, but something had changed. Stalin was dead.
