DRAFT HORSES // FINALLY a foal is bornAdded:
Hey everybody, welcome back to the farm.
So, this has been an exciting day. Uh, it's been a a long afternoon and a long evening. It's uh almost midnight on May the 4th and we finally had a fold today.
So, I'm going to keep the intro short.
We uh I explain everything in the in the video coming up. I have just been busy. We are uh having a family get together out here at the farm in a couple of weeks and I have a bunch of projects out here that are eight out of a 10 and I'm trying to get as many of them done as I can to make them a 10 out of a 10 before the family shows up so that the place can be as ready to go as it's going to be. They're not all going to get done, but I'm trying to get as many of them done as I can. And so, uh, Ron has reached out to me a couple of times. Ron, I'm not, uh, ignoring you.
I've just been wide open trying to get stuff done. I appreciate you reaching out and checking on me, and I apologize for not getting back to you, but hopefully this video coming up will uh, answer all your questions. So with that, let's get on to what happened today.
Guys, I literally just left. We are at day 357 and I literally just left and the neighbor called me and told me that she dropped this.
Day 357.
We have got a 30 minute old little horse here.
Got a little star on his head. Have no idea.
Have no idea if it's a Colts or a Philly.
And everybody's in the neighborhood.
She's keeping him at a distance and he's trying to get up. He's got an hour to get up. I've already called the vet to get the vet out here.
Mama's doing a good job of taking care of him.
I literally just checked her. I checked her tail.
I checked her vulva.
We've got no colostrum.
We've got no Well, now come here, baby.
I don't know how she's going to act with me being over here by the baby, but I think she'll tolerate me. Okay.
I don't really want to mess with the baby too much.
Are you okay? We'll see how she does.
We've got um we've got some waxy buildup on the on the tits now, which we didn't have. You better get away from me. Get away from me. You're going to go on there. Normally neighbor told me that uh that she was running the other horses off, which I want her to. I've got to get them separated and get her out into the barn.
But look at her little feet. She's got this.
Looks like we got a little Philly.
We're going to front.
I'm pretty sure I said it, but we are at day 357.
And I literally came out here and checked her.
I checked the bag. I checked for waxing.
I checked for any type of leaking. I checked her vulva. Checked to see if her tail was loose.
Nothing.
And she did lay down twice, which kind of gave me an indication that she might maybe go tonight, but when I checked her vulva, there was nothing, no s no significant changes in her in her body.
And so I went up to the grocery store and when I went to the grocery store, my next door neighbor called me and told me that there was a baby on the ground when he came back from church.
So, she is about 35 minutes old, something like that.
>> A little older than that.
>> But I think we've got a Philly.
>> I'm pretty sure it's a Philly.
Just going to let her take her time and get up. I've already called the vet to get the vet to come out.
Waiting on a return call, but got to get them over into the barn where they can bed down and get out of this heat.
We are at about an hour. I just got off the phone with the vet and the vet said that everything that I was telling her was good. I just collected the bag with the umbilicus and got it secured cuz she wants to examine it. And we do have a little Philly confirmed.
and she is just slipping. Her little feathers on her feet on the bottom of her feet are just they're slipping and she's just having a little difficulty standing up, but her and mom are doing great. Mom's being super attentive and they're bonding really good. As soon as we get her up, we're going to take her and put her in the barn and let them sleep in the barn to where they can bond.
And mom's cleaning up her umbilicus right here.
Baby is trying to get up.
Her little front feet just keep sliding out in front of her.
Mama is being extremely tolerant of me, which is good.
This little baby is hot.
She's a pretty little thing. Look at that. Look how pretty.
She'll get up here in just a minute.
Doc said she should be really steady on her feet in two hours once we get her.
Like I said, we'll get her up in the barn. See, her feet are sliding out. Let me put my foot here to where she can push on my foot.
There we go. Oh, did you see that?
She is so close.
Those little feathers on the bottom of her feet. I don't know what the official name of them is, but they're just called feathers for ease, I guess.
But what they are for um is they make her feet soft and when she's inside the sack kicking and stuff, she doesn't kick a hole in the sack. And those are soft feathers that just protect protect the inside of the mama and protect the baby so she doesn't kick her kick a hole in the bag while she's inside the mother. And then once she gets up and starts walking around, then those things just rub off.
So they won't be there. They probably won't be there tomorrow.
But we're gonna let this little lady get up and get him in the barn. See mama's shadow. She still has not passed her placenta.
Let me get her. She still has not passed her placenta. We are right at an hour.
vet said it, you know, it's not uncommon for them to be on the ground for an hour and a half, but we got to get her nurse in.
And mama's got to pass a placenta.
She just gets wore out trying to get up.
She's going to push again.
Oh my. I'm sorry, baby.
I moved my foot right as she pushed. She almost got up.
Yeah, you're good, mama.
They're bonding really good.
That's just so crazy that I was literally just here. I've been here all night and uh I you know, I checked on him at 8:30 last night. I checked on him at 10:40 last night. Um checked on him at 7:30 this morning.
And I've been in the back cutting all of that back there. It's what I've been doing with all of my time. There's 10 acres back there and it takes a while to cut that.
And I came out here and checked her again.
And like I said, she didn't have any wax buildup. She didn't have any leaking.
and her bags weren't even completely full.
So, and when I grabbed her tail and pulled her tail away from her body, she sucked her tail right back up, you know, and their tails got to be loose in order to to fold. So, she must have disengaged her tail like right at the very end.
And I left and went to the grocery store.
And this happened. I just I knew it was going to happen under the cover of darkness, but it didn't.
And I saw we were over here eating hay and she laid down twice and tried to get up twice or she laid down twice and then she um she laid down twice and rolled and then stood back up. And I said, "Well, that's an indication she's trying to get the baby into the birth canal."
And it was already in the birth canal, but I think she was just trying to assist it. And then she started pushing up against Grace.
And every time Grace would walk off, she would walk into Grace and just rub up against her. So I knew there was some abnormal stuff going on.
And uh and then um then she went back to grazing.
So I said, "Well, I don't know. I'll just I'm going to run to the grocery store and I'll worry about it in just a little bit."
She freaking waited till I left and she dropped it.
Oh, baby's wore out.
Oh, so close.
It's like it rest and then it tries to get up and it just completely wears itself out trying to get up.
It's got to rest for a minute.
We're going to go again here in a second.
We just got up.
Oh, he is unsteady.
Don't push her over, mama.
She's already gone for a nap. She's looking.
She's going to find it.
Little trunk thing here.
It's just crazy. Their instincts know to get up in there and find that nipple.
She's searching for it.
I can see some wax on her little teeth up there.
All right. What What are you doing, mama?
Mama's more interested in um smelling her umbilical.
She is so unsteady.
She'll be good in an hour, though. Look how long those legs are.
Jean, give her an opportunity to get to your nipple. There you go. Good girl.
Good girl.
Uhoh.
Thought the thing was going to fall over. She got her head in the right place.
Jane, stand. Whoa. Jean.
See, Jane wants to keep smelling her umbilical.
Jane's going to knock her over.
There you go, J.
She's slowly inching her way over there.
You went too far. You got to put it in reverse.
You hear that little baby talking?
Can you go nurse on mama's smelling her Give her a nipple.
Once the baby starts nursing, it should start pooping out some sticky poop, possibly purging what's in We're about an hour and a half old, I think.
Actually, we're an hour and 45 minutes old.
She's going to push Grace off.
Good girl. Good girl, Grace. Good girl.
Good girl, Grace.
Everybody's coming over here now that she's standing up. I'm surprised mama's tolerating them to be honest with you.
Gunner ended up being a bayone after he grew up for a month. He's a bayone. But Cheyenne and Sierra are blue even though they look like they're bay, but they're covered in red clay from rolling in the red clay. But they're they're blue runs. But Gunner is actually a bay run.
Got it going bit.
Still unsteady. We're been on our feet about 10 minutes.
She's just going right into the heart of him. Jean's being very tolerant.
It's not really recommended to let him do this, but there you go. Uhuh. I can't get uh the baby over to the barnyard yet. I've got to She's got to get an hour steady on her feet.
Jean let him smell them and then she said, "Okay, y'all had enough. Go on."
Grace is still four days. Well, she was bred four days later, so she's at She was at day 357 today. Then that puts her at day 353. So, she's due any day.
Good girl. Good girl, Jean. Good girl, Jean.
Jean was trying to give her her bag.
Not steady yet, but we're getting there.
Every time she gets close to that bag, Jean freaking turns.
She just got on the tit for a second, but there's too much. These damn horses won't get out of the way. Go on, Bit.
I got to get her into the barnyard.
But she actually got on the tent just for a second.
Uh, she doesn't like her. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. Go on.
All right. So, I was able to get everybody over into paddic three and get them all locked in there. And I've got mama and baby out here by themselves.
Ideally, I want to get them into the barnyard, but we are 79° today. And I think baby's just a little tired and so I might be able to get him into the barn tonight, but she's resting comfortably right now.
And mama's okay with her resting comfortably.
All right, we just woke up from our 15minute slumber.
We're going to try to get up here.
Hopefully get a little nurse again.
Mama's not leaving her side.
Her feet are just still spreading out.
So this little girl will be registered.
Just going to try again.
At least she got her front feet planted that time.
Still haven't gotten any good nursing in and we're a little over two hours old.
We um Like I said, we got on the nipple just for a second, but then Jean went and ran everybody off.
Everybody was getting too close and Grace, you know, saw her as a threat and pinned her ears at her and then turned around and tried to kick her and she was like, "You're what's causing my sister so much pain.
You're an alien. You're foreign. I don't know what you are. I'm going to exterminate you."
But once Grace has her babies, then after 24 48 hours, they'll they'll tolerate each other and they'll be fine.
All right, we got up again.
Took her a few attempts and she is trying to find the nipple.
Hopefully with no distractions, we can get on the nipple this time and Jean a little be a little bit more tolerating of it.
All right, Jean's stepping forward, letting her She's working her way back.
She's trying Oh, come on. She's like suckling on her leg.
Up there now.
Here, mama.
Oh, you are so close, little baby.
sidest stepping her every time she gets close.
The vet said that once the baby starts suckling, then uh it'll trigger Jean to start producing some milk. Ah, see there we go. See how she's sidest stepping her?
Come on.
I don't know what Jean's telling her, but Jean's telling her something.
It's almost like Jean's pushing her.
Jean's wanting to smell her, but Jean's pushing her past the nip.
I think once she suckles the first time, I think Jean will be accepting her. Jean doesn't want her on the messing with her bag.
Baby knows it's there. She is so close.
She just keeps trying to go down on her thigh.
It's probably something leaked down on her leg and that's what she's smelling.
She just keeps trying though. She just keeps coming back.
Oh, we're so close.
There we go.
Not on it yet.
She's right in front of it.
Get on it, baby. Oh, we have contact.
There we go.
There we go.
Now she's on it.
He can hear that milk coming out.
She's going to get on the other tit. All right. Now she's on both. She's gotten on both tits now.
Jean's comfortable enough to graze.
All right.
All right. We are trying to get to the barnyard now.
The baby is nursed.
Jean is coming and the baby is following. Baby's pretty steady on his feet.
And Jean keeps turning around and going back to him to her.
Jean, come on, Jean.
Come on, Jean. Let's go. Come on, Jean.
Come on.
Bring [ __ ] with you. Come on.
Good girl.
Oh, baby's doing good. I'm going to bring you I'm going to get you some oats in here. Come on. No. No. We're not going to the hay. We're going to get oats, honey. Look how good that baby's walking.
Jane, let's go get some oats.
All right, guys. We're in the barnyard.
Mama's got a wheelbarrow full of hay.
She's got water over here. I've been refilling it every hour.
Baby is nursing comfortably and they are baby's laying down and taking naps.
And what I've done is I've left the alleyway open and everybody's just, you know, just kind of congregating, walking around, milling around, and it's just keeping her somewhat calm because she knows that everybody else is around. But as long as she's with her baby, she's fine and nobody can get in here. You know, the doors are closed.
So, she'll be fine in here. Bet's going to come tomorrow.
They're going to call in the morning and they're going to tell me what time they're going to come and they're going to check the baby over and then they're going to uh check her colostrum and her milk and make sure she's producing.
We've met all the benchmarks. We've done everything we're supposed to do except she hasn't passed her placenta.
And that's a little concerning. Now, when the neighbor called me today, he told me that the vultures were all out there eating something off the ground.
And I guess it's a possibility that when the baby came out, the placenta came out with the baby and they ate the placenta.
I have no idea, but and I don't know what's all involved in getting the placenta, but she's not um she doesn't seem to be in any pain or any discomfort or anything like that.
Baby was getting a little bit of spritzy in here a minute ago. He was jumping around and bucking and carrying on, but uh at least he knows where the nipple is and nursing pretty pretty comfortably.
And mama's mama's letting him do it. And mama's looking great.
She's enjoying her hay.
Looks like the baby's about to lay down.
He just lays down and takes him a snooze.
So, I'm going to go take a shower, get some dinner.
I'll come back and check on them afterwards.
That's super exciting that we finally had a fo.
Jean is hopefully I'm sorry, Grace is hopefully just a couple of days behind her.
We will see what happens. But appreciate you guys coming along. And as always, remember who you are. Be kind to those around you. Stand up for what you believe in.
