Drought recovery requires evaluating multiple environmental parameters including precipitation levels, stream flow rates, and soil moisture at different depths, as heavy rainfall events can quickly replenish surface water and topsoil moisture while deep soil moisture recovery may take longer, demonstrating that comprehensive environmental monitoring is essential for accurately assessing drought conditions and predicting water availability.

Recent heavy rains in Vermont and New Hampshire continue to help with last year's historic drough...
Added:Well, Jess, I had my kids at the park yesterday and just as the first raindrops started coming down we said, "Man, maybe we should get to the car."
And it was a good thing, too, because within I felt it like about 30 seconds it was suddenly pouring.
>> It picked up fast. I made the mistake of, "Oh, I'm in a break between showers.
I'm going to go to the grocery store."
Same thing. The parking lot was just 2 in of water as I was trying to walk back out to my car. And that rain came down heavy. Thankfully, we did not see flood reports that we could have seen with this much rain. There were spots, Danby in particular picked up 4 in Brewer's Corner, 3.68 in Potsdam saw quite a bit as well. We had spots like Wallingford approaching 3 in. Brainardsville 2.8 2 and 3/4 for West Bridgewater. So, lots of heavy downpours in the Burlington area an inch, but even on the lower end it was quite a wet day yesterday. And of course, the highest we saw 4 in of rain in Danby. And it's worth noting that there was a site in Rutland County that picked up an inch and a quarter in just 40 minutes last night around 11:00 p.m.
So, it didn't just come down, it came down heavy at times. But of course, we were in a drought last fall and then we dug ourselves out of the drought over the course of the spring. We've had a couple heavy rain events in the last week. Where do we stand now? That's where our meteorologist Gunnar Consaul comes in. Gunnar, walk us through where we stand with groundwater going into the next week here.
>> Yeah, I mean, so through the past 6 months we've seen pretty stagnation where we haven't seen really low deficits, but we also haven't seen really high surpluses. But like you mentioned, really recently, just May and June, we've really seen the taps turn on and we've seen pretty steady rainfalls.
This is the past 60 or 6 months, but let's look at the past 90 days, basically the past 3 months. You can see we're really above normal in northern Vermont, even some patches of well above normal just in the Northeast Kingdom and even some out towards the Lakes Region of New Hampshire.
Now, where does that put us though in terms of groundwater drought concern?
Well, this is about the time last year that we saw things change for the wet to the drier, but so far that long-term rain deficit well above normal. So, we're good there. Stream flow rates, some of the highest they've been on this day in history, so we're good there. Top soil moisture, the first meter of ground, it's pretty wet as well. We still are recovering though in the deep soil moisture. That is still pretty dry, but it is trending in the right direction with all these frequent and steady rainfalls. So, with that 7-day forecast that Jess is going to show you coming up, you'll see that we still have plenty more chances of rain that'll hopefully continue soaking into the deep soil.
