For years, Havel [music] spoke out against Czechoslovakia's communist government. The government tried to silence him, but everything changed on November 17th. [music] Students gathered in Prague for a peaceful protest. Then police suddenly moved in and broke up the demonstration.
The crackdown shocked [music] the country. People poured into the streets demanding freedom and democracy. Day after day, [music] the crowds grew bigger. Soon, more than a million people joined the movement. The government realized it could no longer [music] stop them. By December, the Communist Party gave up power, and the man they once imprisoned, [music] Václav Havel, became president.
