US President Donald Trump is visiting Beijing for a summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping to address the Iran crisis, specifically urging China to use its influence to help reopen the Strait of Hormuz, which has been closed since the outbreak of the US-Israeli war with Iran and was previously handling nearly 20% of the world's oil and LNG shipments; this summit also addresses broader US-China tensions including sanctions on Chinese companies and arms sales to Taiwan.

President Trump Pressures China's President Xi Over Iran Crisis & Hormuz Blockade | US-Iran | N18GAdded:
The Iran War is now reshaping global diplomacy and all eyes are on Beijing.
Next week, US President Donald Trump will travel to Beijing for a crucial summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping, where one issue is expected to dominate the talks, reopening the straight of Hormuz. The strategic waterway has remained closed since the outbreak of the USIsraeli war with Iran, disrupting global energy supplies and rattling economies across Asia. Before the conflict, nearly 20% of the world's oil and liqufied natural gas shipments passed through the strait. The Trump administration is now urging China to use its influence with Iran to help deescalate the crisis and restore commercial shipping routes.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Trump and she are expected to exchange views on Iran during the May 14th and 15th summit. He also called on Beijing to stop blocking United Nations initiatives aimed at protecting shipping operations in the Strait of Hormuz.
The economic impact of the closure is already being felt across Asia.
Analysts say the pressure may have pushed China to quietly work with Pakistan to help broker a temporary 2-week ceasefire in the region.
While Beijing is not officially mediating the Iran conflict, its diplomatic role has come into sharper focus in recent days.
China has traditionally avoided deep involvement in conflicts far from its borders.
But in recent years, Beijing has steadily expanded its role in international diplomacy, attempting to mediate conflicts stretching from Southeast Asia to Europe. Now, amid the Iran war, both Washington and Thrron acknowledged that China has become an important player in efforts to reduce tensions.
That role was visible on Wednesday when Chinese Foreign Minister Wong Yi met Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Arachi in Beijing.
During the meeting, Wong Yi called for what he described as a comprehensive ceasefire, saying China was deeply distressed by the ongoing war. At the same time, Beijing is also viewing Trump's visit as an opportunity to stabilize ties with Washington.
The United States recently imposed sanctions on a major Chinese oil refinery and around 40 shipping companies over purchases of Iranian crude oil. In response, Beijing instructed Chinese firms not to comply with the sanctions, invoking its so-called blocking rule for the first time. China is also expected to use the summit to push the United States to reduce arm sales to Taiwan.
Another major flash point in US China relations.
So while the focus may be on reopening the straight of Hormuz, the Trump she meeting could end up shaping much more than just the future of the Iran conflict.
