The Kerala Legislative Assembly sparked controversy by playing only the first two stanzas of the national song 'Vande Mataram' during a session, defying the Union Ministry of Home Affairs directive that mandated the full six-stanza version (approximately 3 minutes 10 seconds) for the 150th birth anniversary celebrations. The decision was made under the direction of Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan, who had previously played the full song during the swearing-in ceremony but reversed his position after facing criticism from CPM and Jamaat-e-Islami, who claimed portions of the song are 'against some sections of society.' This incident highlights the ongoing political tensions between state governments and central authorities regarding national symbols and cultural heritage.

Vande Mataram Row: CM VD Satheesan Asked To Sing Only 2 Portions In Kerala AssemblyAdded:
Begin this bulletin with a big breaking news that we're getting right now at this moment and this is about Vande Mataram not being played full in the Kerala assembly. Now there is a row over Vande Mataram not being played full in the Kerala assembly because the Vande Mataram song was not fully played during the beginning of the assembly session.
Now this time the government decided to sing and play only the first two lines of the song. However, CPM criticized it as some portions of the song is against some section of the society as per them.
Now during the ceremony, during the sitting in ceremony of the new government, the song was fully played and it was hailed by BJP and it was as per the direction of the new CM V.D.
Satheesan that the song was not fully sung, not fully played. And as part of a nationwide initiative commemorating the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, that is the MHA, had issued a directive on February 6th, 2026 mandating the community singing and playing of the complete six stanza in this case of the Vande Mataram. Now the full rendition of Vande Mataram needs to be played which takes about 3 minutes and 10 seconds needs to be played and this was not played in the Kerala assembly. This is the latest that we are getting and required to proceed the national anthem Jana Gana Mana at official government functions and school assemblies. All right. For more details, we are being joined by Shankar on the latest that's happening there. Shankar, if you can put this into perspective and share the exact details of what unfolded, whose direction was this to not play the Vande Mataram in full? Over to you for the latest details on this, Shankar.
>> Yes, in every assembly session in Kerala, the fight I used to be between the governor and the state government that would be on the contents in the policy speech. You know, and last time I you remember the policy speech when the government delivered it he could not read full contents in that policies policies it included fake criticism against the central government and some other baseless data due to this reason last time in February the governor Rajendra Alika did not read the full content of the policy speech but this time to avoid a all kinds of conflicts are the local one was in discussion with the state government and reached a full consensus over how the policy speech should be and direction was also given to play the Vande Bharat Vande Mataram in a full in full stringer in the beginning and the end of the session but uh against the direction of the uh the governor >> [laughter] >> uh not to play the song you know the song was not not even played only the music was played in the beginning and at the end of the session just two uh music lines of Vande Mataram was played and when the music was started all expected that the full music of Vande Mataram song will be played and that too did not happen uh the government took a decision not to play the song not to play the song completely but by singing two songs they just trying to cover their face by uh uh stating that they have just followed that Vande Mataram music is is at least played but after the stalker the local one expressed a strong displeasure over the developments as uh and the BJP leader BJP MLA V Muraleedharan former central minister V Muraleedharan on his Facebook page has shared a post stating that uh the national song Vande Mataram is not acceptable to the the Congress led UDF government in the state and they surrendered before the demand of Jamaat-e-Islami and even CPM because you you know last time on May 18th there was a swearing ceremony of the new government and in that ceremony the Vande Mataram song was fully played and against it Jamaat-e-Islami and even the CPM came up a strongly against the state government stating that the V.D. Satheesan and new government is in cooperation with the central government and there has been an unholy nexus between the central and state government. So after that incident V.D. Satheesan took a U-turn and paid attention and fully agreed to the demands of Jamaat-e-Islami and CPM not to play Vande Mataram in the assembly.
Yes, sir.
>> Yeah, yeah, yeah. Shankar, stay with us.
