In Kenyan politics, endorsements from established leaders like Senator Tom Ojienda can significantly boost a candidate's profile, while youth voters increasingly prefer candidates with fresh perspectives and minimal political experience, as demonstrated by Ojienda's endorsement of Edwin Sifuna, who has never served in national government, contrasting with experienced leaders like Kalonzo Musyoka and Fred Matiang'i.

Senator Tom Ojienda Endorses Sifuna's For Presidenct, Wanga Runs MadAñadido:
The Linda Wanyanchi team that is led by Edwin Sifuna who is currently the Nairobi senator keeps on widening each day because in each day another vocal leader joins the team. And today another leader from Kisumu who is the Kisumu senator Tom Ojienda has endorsed Edwin Sifuna and decided that he can be the president of Kenya and just as the Senegal president Ousmane Sonko. And this is a statement that [music] has caught me off guard because the Tom Ojienda is a close ally to Gladys Wanga and Oburu Oginga and he has positioned himself as the leaders among other leaders in Linda ground team which is a rival faction against Linda Wanyanchi.
Now in an interview by Herman Manyora at the Nairobi Review Tom Ojienda indicated that Sifuna has the capacity that has never been experienced in Kenya. In fact, together with Babu Owino according to him, they bring a different sense of you know excitement to the youth that has never been experienced before.
Here's the tip. Uh and Babu Owino presents some newness. Mhm.
Uh some something previously unseen in the political space.
>> Uh they say a player who have not been there because the political scene is replete with individuals who have run this country in many capacities.
>> Yes. Mutunga has been ministers. Kalonzo has been everything. He's been minister, he's been vice president, everything. Uh Wamalwa has been minister. Sifuna has been nothing. He just came into Senate and is up there. Babu has been an MP but hasn't done anything up there.
So, they present some newness akin to what we saw in the in the Sonko axis in in in in West Africa in Senegal. Yes. Where you had the the the president of Senegal.
He's actually Sifuna's age mate. He was 37 years old. He came out Yeah. and was elected as president then. [music] Yes.
And he seems fallen out with the issues in the Sonko camp. Now, that is Tom Ojienda. You know, at first I didn't believe my ears when I heard him praising >> [music] >> Edwin Sifuna and uh you know.
Babu Owino, the member of parliament in Embakasi East, but it is true. He's you know, praising them so much and also speaking so good about them.
Uh in fact, even comparing Edwin Sifuna and the president of Senegal.
Uh he is saying that they are of the same age, you know. And there's something that I've been telling you here about Edwin Sifuna and Babu Owino and it has been echoed by Tom Ojienda.
Tom Ojienda is saying that Edwin Sifuna and Babu Owino are bringing some newness.
Yeah, they are bringing some newness to the political space in Kenya that has never been experienced before. So, the kind of way they interact and approach the youth, the kind of the kind of way they interact with the adults, it puts them in a different uh you know, in a different basket all together from other political leaders in Kenya. And maybe that is the reason why uh he is loved so much and the Linda Wanjiru team is growing at a very higher rate in Kenya.
That That That alone cannot qualify that Tom Ojienda is happy with Edwin Sifuna, but I can tell for free uh this you can see from the way Tom Ojienda was expressing [music] himself. He's putting it in a way that you can easily say that this man is in love of what Edwin Sifuna [music] is doing. And another thing Edwin Sifuna is one leader who has never served in other capacities in national government.
You know, other opposition leaders Matiang'i has served as the interior cabinet secretary, as a super cabinet secretary.
Uh Kalonzo Musyoka has served for the longest time since the time of Moi.
[music] Yeah, he has been there. Martha Karua in fact started to be the member of parliament in 1992. She has served from 2003 as the the minister.
She has served this country for the longest time.
Yeah. When you talk of uh uh you know, Rigathi Gachagua, in as much as he has not served so much, he has been the deputy president for God's sake. So, Edwin Sifuna presents himself as a package of a leader who is in the his first time as a senator, who a leader who has never served in the national politics, as a leader who has never dirtied his hands in the national coffers, a leader who believes in what he does, a leader who is loved. People respect Edwin Sifuna of who he is.
Yeah. And uh the way Edwin Sifuna is so humble, you know, I've seen leaders a leader saying, you know, I'm so and so, I'm now going to be the president the the way Jimmy Wanjigi does his thing. You know, he he he speaks with a lot of hubris. He speaks with a lot of pride that he's going to be the president of Kenya. But that does not work with Edwin Sifuna.
And that is why all the time he introduces himself he said that he says that "Mimi ndio Sifuna." Not that a presidential candidate, not He only introduces himself with the the positions he has been entrusted with.
He introduces He introduces himself as a senator Nairobi.
And nakumafenzi ya Mungu yeye bado ni naibu mkuu wa chama kikuu kabisa ODM na naibu kiranja wa walio wachache katika Senate.
That is how he introduces himself. That tells you the kind of person Edwin Sifuna is. And that is why perhaps he resonates so well with the youth.
And according to Tom Ojienda, for Edwin Sifuna to be the president [music] in Kenya, unless the young people come out with the in large numbers to register [music] as new voters so that they can vote for him.
Because in Kenya, we have two types of Kenyans. We are divided. The youth want Edwin Sifuna because Sifuna has never served in any capacity. They want a newbie, someone with fresh hands, someone with some logic, someone who understands the plight of the youth, someone who resonates well with the youth. That is who the the youth want in Kenya. They don't want anything to do with Kalonzo.
They don't want anything to do with Matiang'i despite the fact that during Gen Z movement demonstrations in 2024, they called on Fred Matiang'i to come and help them out. But it's no more Edwin Sorry, Fred Matiang'i has lost that touch that, you know, the Gen Zs were calling on. And that tells you that things are not okay for Fred Matiang'i. That love the youth the Gen Zs have for Matiang'i, it deviated. It In fact, they it is shifted to Edwin Sifuna.
Unfortunately, for the uh the adults, the the aging people in Kenya, and remember those are the people who vote so much in Kenya, not even the young people. In fact, the young people don't come up.
They don't turn up uh during the voting uh day, during the election day. So, the the elderly, the aging, the adults in Kenya, they don't uh uh propose Edwin Sifuna simply because they say Sifuna is lacking uh the prerequisite experience needed for one to be uh a holder of that office, the president. So, they're saying that Edwin Sifuna is so young. That position needs someone who is so mature psychologically, someone who with experience, [music] someone, you know, uh someone who has been in government.
That's according to that generation. But then, according to Tom Ojienda, who was tentatively endorsing Edwin Sifuna for president, he even equated uh the age of Edwin Sifuna that the president of Senegal, Sonko, is 44 years old. And therefore, uh Edwin Sifuna equally can be the president of Kenya at 44.
That is according to Tom Ojienda, a leader. You know, Tom Ojienda was positioning himself so much as a a leader uh within Linda ground, a close ally to Raila Odinga, a close ally to uh Gladys Wanga. And there are so many things you don't know about uh Tom Ojienda. He is the senior counsel by profession. Uh you know, remember he practiced law, he's a lawyer. He was a lecturer at some point.
He was elected as the senator for Kisumu County 2022 uh to 2027 under, or rather using, Orange Democratic Movement ticket.
And uh according to Politrack, they say that he has been consistently been ranked among the top performers in the legislative house including being recognized as the overall best performing senator by independent research polls like Politrack Africa that I've already told you. And that tells you the kind of person Tom Ojienda is. [music] So Edwin Sifuna has gotten another boost by from Tom Ojienda which has acted as a loss to Gladys Wanga and Oburu Oginga.
