Emilio Aguinaldo, the Filipino revolutionary leader who defeated Spanish colonial rule and declared Philippine independence on June 12, 1898, was betrayed by the American forces he welcomed as liberators; General Frederick Funston orchestrated an elaborate trap by posing as a prisoner of war surrounded by fake Filipino soldiers who were actually American troops in disguise, luring Aguinaldo into his mountain stronghold where real weapons were revealed, demonstrating how trust in allies can lead to devastating consequences when those allies have conflicting interests.
