"And you've been not eating enough?" he said. "I've been She almost corrected him. Almost said something more dignified." "Yes," she said instead.
"Basically, yes." He nodded once like he was filing that away somewhere. That's a stupid thing to do to a person, he said. She blinked. I beg your pardon. Not you. He shook his head slightly. Them? The whole business of it. Telling a woman she has to shrink herself so a man can find her acceptable. He picked up his water again. That's a stupid thing to do to a person. Evelyn stared at him. He paused. Drum asks after you. She did smile then fully this time before she could decide whether to. Does he? He went and sniffed at where you sat twice the morning after you were there. Caleb said it neutrally, but there was something around his eyes. That's high praise from drum. Tell him I'm flattered. He nodded once. I'll do that.
He stepped aside on the step to let her pass. Take care. EMTT Cray won't renew. Others will follow because they already follow each other on everything and because my father and Victor Hail between them have she pressed her palms flat on the table.
They've made my situation into a town project and the town has decided that the appropriate response is to manage me until I comply. She looked up. I'm not going to comply. Caleb looked at her for a moment. Then he unfolded his arms and poured the coffee and put a cup in front of her. "No," he said. "I don't imagine you are." "I don't know what to do about the bread route," she wrapped her hands around the cup. "I have three regular buyers outside of EMTT. I could expand.
There are towns along the East Road that don't have a regular bakery supply. I've looked at the map. The distances are manageable. If I had a regular transport," she stopped. "I'm thinking out loud. Go ahead. She looked at him.
He meant it. She could tell he wasn't being polite. He was sitting across from her with his coffee and his straightbacked attention and genuinely meant for her to keep talking. So she did. She laid it out the way she'd been laying numbers out in her head for days.
The towns, the distances, the quantities, the days of the week that made most sense for transport. It was rough and it had gaps in it, but it was real. and saying it out loud to someone who was actually listening made it more real, made the gaps show up more clearly, which meant they could be addressed. When she finished, the coffee was mostly gone, and the afternoon had moved past the high point of the day.
You'd need a reliable wagon route, Caleb said. East Road is decent through to Pharaoh Crossing. Past that, it's rougher and wet weather. I know. I've walked that road. I go to Pharaoh Crossing twice a month for supplies. He said it without elaboration. She looked at him. You're offering to carry bread.
I'm saying I go that direction anyway.
He turned his cup in his hand. If there were things that needed to be along for the ride, I could make sure they arrived in one piece. It was not a grand offer.
