Bangladesh Border 'Seal' Push Fast-Tracked, Bengal Govt Hands Over Land For 27-Km Border FencingAdded:
The big story of the day, Operation Detect Delete and Deport is in full force in West Bengal two weeks after taking charge. West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has launched an aggressive crackdown on the illegal immigrants, reviving one of BJP's biggest poll promises. The Bengal Chief Minister, who has repeatedly vowed a clean up during the election campaign, has now directed the officials to identify, detain, and deport the illegal immigrants at the earliest. Now, the push to seal the Bangladesh borders now being fast-tracked by the government.
The Bengal uh government has finally handed over land for the fencing along a crucial 27-km border stretch. The very project that remained stuck for years and because of the delays and a glaring lack of the political will. So, that is what we're learning so far as far as uh Detect, Delete, and Deport policy of the West Bengal is uh concerned. Let me take you through more details as far as the sealing of the Bangladesh border is concerned. That has uh been fast-tracked by the West Bengal government because they're handing over land for 27-km border fencing uh is what we're learning so far. Also, 75 acres transferred to BSF already. 43 acres acquired. Nearly 78% of uh the 22,000 km border is being fenced at this point in time. Land transfer delays earlier slowed uh the fencing work. And at this point in time, two weeks after taking charge of the West Bengal, Central Government uh is also pushing faster anti-infiltration border infra as well. Let me give you more uh more perspective on this and go across to my colleague uh Rajesh tracking all the details. Rajesh, good morning. Uh tell us more about this Operation Detect, Delete, and Deport that is in full force in West Bengal after taking charge as the West Bengal Chief Minister. That is the first task that uh the government is taking. That is the aggressive crackdown on the illegal immigrants. Uh tell us more about this.
>> See, during the election commission before the last assembly poll, uh BJP had announced that infiltration, which is a which was one of the biggest issues in the state of West Bengal would be completely stopped if BJP comes to the power. And you know, after getting this massive victory, BJP has formed the government in the state of West Bengal.
And soon after forming the government, soon after taking oath as a chief minister, Suvendu Adhikari Sarkar has announced that all the Bangladeshis and Rohingyas will be will be identified and they will be deported to their country.
And as soon as they took this decision, many holding centers were established in several districts in all all districts in the state of West Bengal. Since then, Bangladeshis and Rohingyas are being detected and they're being they're being held in the all those holding centers across the state of West Bengal. Right now, total total 386 Bangladeshis were detected and they're currently in this in this all these uh holding centers across 11 districts right now. And let me tell you, as per the official data, total 386 Bangladeshi nationals are currently staying in holding centers across 11 districts in state of West Bengal. And Basirhat police district has the highest with 335 persons, including 140 males and 99 females and 80 children. And we have seen total more than 30 people are in the holding center in Murshidabad district also. So, these all people are in holding center. These all are identified as Bangladeshi and Rohingyas.
And BSF has been informed on behalf of the state police authority regarding their deportation. Once the BSF gives a date for deportation, all these process proceedings for for deportation will be started.
>> All right, because that was a key poll promise by the Bharatiya Janata Party as well. Thanks so much, Rajesh, for getting us all those details. Let's also tell you about why the border fencing remains crucial for India's national security. Data on the illegal immigration cases actually show that there has been a sharp rise in the violation linked to the cross-border movement, especially along the Bangladesh border. Let's take you through the cases that have been registered under the Passport Act that includes 1,283 violations that we have seen 15 from Pakistan and one from Nepal is what we are learning so far. Now, under the Foreigner Act, the number are even higher. 1,676 violation linked to Bangladesh, 15 to Pakistan and eight to Nepal. And those figures actually highlight why stronger border surveillance and the fencing continues to remain a key priority focus as far as West Bengal is also concerned.
