Researchers have engineered harmless photosynthetic microalgae into eye drops to treat severe dry eye disease; when applied to the cornea, light activates these microalgae, which consume carbon dioxide waste from corneal cells and deliver fresh photosynthetic oxygen directly to the tissue, addressing tissue hypoxia that occurs when the cornea is starved of oxygen.
