Most people's thinking falls apart under pressure. John Wix gets better. For years, I was about as lame as anybody could be. Before every class presentation, my social anxiety and heart would skyrocket. My mind would go blank and all I wanted to do was hide.
After spending the last decade studying neuroscience and coaching hundreds of students, I saw that staying calm under pressure and solving difficult problems is not something you're born with. It's something your nervous system can be trained to be really good at. Throughout the films, John Wick is constantly thrown into situations that should overwhelm almost anyone. He's surrounded, outnumbered, exhausted, wounded, and forced to make life or death decisions in fractions of a second. Yet somehow he always outsmarts everyone. You may think that he is simply fearless. But what his nervous system is actually doing is much more impressive. In the early 2000s, researchers studying how people stay calm under pressure discovered something surprising. With the right kind of training, the thinking part of your brain becomes better at regulating your threat response instead of being overwhelmed by it. The tough part though is that fear is not a flaw in your character. It's one of the oldest survival systems your brain has. You cannot simply decide not to feel fear any more than you can decide not to feel pain. So, if John Wick isn't staying calm because he was born different, then what is he doing? Growing up, I heard people say the same thing over and over.
Some people just don't have any fear.
Most of us treat fearlessness like a personality trait. We assume some people are naturally calm under pressure while everyone else just has to live with freezing, overthinking, or just falling apart when the stakes get high. But modern neuroscience paints a very different picture. Researchers have found that with the right kind of training, the upper thinking regions of your brain, particularly the preffrontal cortex that is responsible for planning, strategy, decision-making, those regions become much better at staying active despite a threatening situation appearing. That typically allows the amygdala, your brain's threat detection system, to just completely take over. In other words, staying calm under pressure isn't a personality trait. It is a capability your nervous system can achieve. So the real question is how do you train your brain to stay analytical when everything else [music] around you is telling you to panic? Well, composure is not the absence of fear. Whenever you're exposed to a new challenge, your nervous system doesn't immediately know the right answer. So to acquire a new ability, your neurons enter what I refer to as the build phase, where they begin experimenting with different plans for the skill to see what breaks and what works. So every difficult conversation, every presentation, every stressful situation becomes yet another opportunity for them to construct a better blueprint for how you'll respond the next time. However, to solve this ability to stay composed like John Wick does, we have to take it a step further than that. John Wick's composure is built through him attempting to think his way through one stressful situation after another, no matter what it is, giving his neurons yet another chance to build a better blueprint. However, this blueprint is [music] rather special.
Well, most blueprints help you perform an external skill, solving a math problem, speaking another language, throwing a punch. This one is more of a meta blueprint. While most blueprints determine what you're capable of doing, this one determines how capable you remain once everything starts going wrong. In other words, whether you retain access to your higher thinking or watch it get thrown out the window. For John Wick, this may be the most important blueprint of all. Every time he deliberately struggles through trying to remain analytical instead of surrendering to panic, that meta blueprint becomes stronger. Eventually though, this blueprint begins recognizing the early signs that his nervous system is about to spiral, that the amydala is about to take over. His heart rate climbs, his breathing changes, his vision begins narrowing, and before panic completely sets in.
This blueprint will trigger a different response. Instead of defaulting to the automatic survival response, it keeps the thinking part of his brain online.
Neuroscientists describe this as maintaining a top-down control instead of allowing an amygdala hijack to occur.
The major issue though is that simply experiencing pressure isn't enough to just build this blueprint. Plenty of people spend years living stressful lives and never become any calmer. So what separates John Wick from everyone else. Every time your nervous system enters the build phase, it has one job isn't trying to survive the experience.
It's trying to understand it.
Researchers studying how the brain builds new skills discovered something fascinating. Your brain doesn't improve simply because something was difficult.
It improves when the challenge produces information your nervous system [music] can actually use whether the attempt was successful or not. One of the biggest mindset shifts for me was realizing that your neurons don't care whether an attempt succeeded or failed. They care whether they learn something from it.
Your neurons are constantly asking questions like, "What just happened? Why did that thing work? Why did that thing fail? What should we keep? What should we just throw away? They're trying to build the most accurate blueprint they possibly can. And they can only do that if they can actually tell what causes successes and failures they're seeing.
This is where most people accidentally sabotage themselves. You see, if the challenge is too easy, your nervous system more or less already knows the answer. There isn't enough novelty to force it to build a better blueprint. It doesn't really care. You can only rehearse and silence so much before getting on camera. But if you go all in and everything starts falling apart at once, your nervous system just runs into the opposite problem. It can no longer tell what actually caused either the failures or the successes to happen.
Something between those two extremes is what I call the Goldilock zone. It's where the challenge is now difficult enough to force your nervous system to grow, but is controlled enough that it can still identify exactly what happened. Now, every mistake becomes useful data. Every success becomes another clue. Instead of collecting random experiences, your nervous system begins collecting clean information.
This is where your brain finally has enough evidence to invest in a stronger blueprint. And this is exactly how John Wick would have to train. He isn't just trying to make every session harder.
He's trying to make every session more understandable for his [music] neurons.
Every drill, every scenario, every problem is difficult enough to stretch his nervous system, but never so chaotic that it gets lost. This is how he could quickly build the ability to handle an incredible variety of difficult situations without breaking. But that still doesn't explain the biggest mystery. Even if every blueprint he builds is extraordinarily strong, John Wick still should not be able to become this capable across so many completely different situations, which means there's another property of the nervous system we're yet to uncover. One thing that immediately stood out watching John Wick is that he almost never looks surprised. Whether he's fighting his way through the Red Circle nightclub, escaping through traffic in Paris, or walking into a room full of armed enemies, he almost always seems to be one step ahead. Nobody can predict every problem coming their way. So why is John Wick able to respond like he does?
Modern neuroscience has increasingly begun describing the brain as a prediction machine. Every second, it's generating expectations about what it believes is about to happen next. Then it compares those predictions against reality. So every correct prediction strengthens his models. Every mistakes updates it. The amazing thing to understand here is that during the build phase, your neurons aren't just building a blueprint for one specific situation.
They're building a working model of how the world behaves. Every repetition teaches your nervous system what patterns usually come next, which cues matter, which ones don't, where your attention should go before the problem even appears. That's why a beginner feels overwhelmed by 10 different things happening at once, while an expert seems calm and that they only care about two or three details that actually matter.
It's not just that they're able to see more, it's that they're predicting better. One implication of this completely changed how I thought about gaining new skills. Your goal in building increasing your capabilities isn't just to endlessly expose your nervous system to the exact same situation over and over again. It's to gradually expose yourself to new experiences [music] for even a brief amount of time, allowing your nervous system to build out a map of generally what you should do like practicing speaking [music] on camera, taking jiu-jitsu or parkour class, math, or any skill. Every unfamiliar skill and problem gives your nervous system a new model it can now use for anything remotely like that thing. It's important to know that you don't have to master every one of them.
Just having a model is a world of difference from having nothing at all.
So John Wick by exposing himself to enough different things isn't endlessly preparing for one gunfight or one situation where everyone wants to hunt you down. He's deliberately exposing his nervous system to an enormous variety of situations so that fewer and fewer things ever feel completely new. Every experience teaches his prediction engine more about how people and how the world behaves. Eventually, when chaos appears, it isn't really chaos anymore. His nervous system has already seen something close enough to begin making good predictions. But there's still one massive hole in this explanation. This does not explain why everything looks so effortless and fast. John Wick almost never looks mentally busy. And I think that's because of another hidden property of the nervous system that may be even more important. The main principle underneath everything we just talked about is actually much bigger than I can fit into one video. So, I made a free series hitting upon the foundational principle that you can find down below. It has changed more about my life and the students I've worked with than any other principle. [music] It is very useful. I hope you get a lot out of it. One thing that immediately stands out watching John Wick is that he almost never looks mentally busy. Watch him reload, make any decision, it almost looks effortless. Even if your brain knows what's about to happen, you still have to make hundreds of decisions of what to do and fast. So, how is John Wick still able to think so clearly and quickly while anyone else would be overwhelmed? A big misconception is that experts simply think faster. But neuroscience shows us something completely different. As you repeatedly build and refine a skill, your nervous system gradually stops treating it like a conscious problem that needs solving.
[music] Instead, entire sequences of skills, actions, even thoughts begin getting compressed into single units. In simple terms, instead of consciously thinking your way through every little decision, your nervous system gradually compresses dozens of individual actions into a single blueprint it can execute automatically. Think about driving a car. When you first started, every action demanded your attention. Placing your hands on the wheel as you get used to how to steer, how much force to turn the wheel with, while watching your speed, the force of your foot on the pedal. You had to consciously think about every single little thing. But eventually those dozens of tiny decisions stopped feeling like separate tasks [music] because eventually they became squeezed into automatic units recognizing problems. The way the humans behave, the choices they make, and how you respond with either what you say, how you say it, the physical actions you take.
Hundreds of Goldilock zone repetitions have compressed those behaviors into automatic [music] blueprints that require very little to almost no conscious attention. [music] This gives John Wick a massive advantage over anyone who has not automated [music] those same skills. One that John Wick has gone through for every single cognitive skill, motor skill, even your emotional responses can become automatic. This frees up Jon's mental bandwidth to focus on solving deeper and bigger problems. This is why automaticity is so powerful. Every blueprint your nervous system automates frees [music] up more of your prefrontal cortex to analyze, adapt, and make better decisions under pressure.
However, this leaves one major issue.
Despite the fact that Jon's automatic skills have made him much smoother, they do not explain why John Wick seems to keep improving, adapting, and learning at a level that almost never plateaus and outpaces [music] everyone else.
Somehow his nervous system isn't just becoming more efficient, it's becoming increasingly better at learning [music] itself. Most people eventually hit a plateau. The more experienced they become, the harder every small improvement feels. Yet, the world's highest performers can sometimes do the exact opposite. Somehow, Jon isn't just becoming more capable, he's becoming better at becoming capable. Modern neuroscience has been uncovering one possible explanation. Researchers studying the brain's plasticity have found that the brain isn't simply changing its structure under the right conditions. It can also change how easily it learns in the future. This is known as metiplasticity. Every time a brain region is challenged appropriately, chemical signals like brain derived neurotropic factor or BDNF tell those neurons they have permission to build new structures. and BDNF regulates the pace of the construction.
I know this sounds technical, but for me, this is perhaps the most aspirational principle to understand.
Every great practice session isn't just building today's blueprint. It's upgrading how well, how fast, how efficient your machinery builds future abilities. Your nervous system is becoming better at learning itself.
That's exactly what John Wick would have to rely on. Every new challenge is not simply adding on a new skill. It's making the very brain regions responsible for attention, decision-making, prediction, and composure more responsive the next time they're called upon. Eventually, the improvement begins to compound. You're no longer starting every new challenge from the same nervous system you had before. That's one of the most exciting ideas in neuroscience. Improvement isn't just about accumulating more knowledge.
It's about continuously upgrading the biological machinery that creates knowledge in the first place. But even that isn't the biggest lesson John Wick teaches us. Cuz even if John Wick's nervous system learns faster every year, that still does not explain how one improvement seems to strengthen dozens of completely different abilities at the same time. One thing that surprised me while digging through the neuroscience was discovering that your brain is far more economical than I ever imagined.
Intuitively, most of us picture learning a new skill as building an entirely new piece of machinery. But according to what is known as the neural reuse hypothesis, that's often not what your brain does at all. Whenever possible, it appears that it prefers to recycle circuits it has already built and reuse them again for something new. One of the best examples comes from, say, reading.
Human beings did not evolve a brand new brain region just for written language.
Instead, the brain largely repurposes visual circuits that originally evolved to recognize objects and shapes. It found existing machinery that was already good at recognizing patterns and simply taught it to do a new job. Modern neuroscience keeps finding examples like this throughout the brain. And this has exciting implications for becoming more capable. Every time you deeply strengthen a brain region, you aren't just improving today's ability. You're investing in machinery. Your nervous system may just recycle for problems you haven't even encountered yet. That's exactly what someone like John Wick would have to rely on. His nervous system is constantly asking, "Have I solved something similar to this before?" That's one of the biggest reasons extraordinary people often seem to adapt so quickly. They aren't building everything from scratch.
They're standing on top of neural blueprints they've spent time strengthening. And the more we learn about the nervous system, the less I think intelligence is about storing more information. It seems to be about continuously upgrading and reusing the same remarkable biological machinery in better and better ways. But after all of this, I think we've still been asking the wrong question. Because John Wick's greatest advantage isn't any single blueprint prediction or recycled circuit. It's something much bigger than all of them put together. Beyond building strong blueprints or automatic skills, many people do spend their lives trying to become more capable by collecting individual skills. You learn public speaking, leadership, a language, coding, self-defense. Many times we treat capability like a collection of separate abilities that we just slowly stack on top of one another. But that stops short of what John Wick would have to do. Throughout the films, John Wick almost never solves a problem with a single ability. Every situation he encounters demands dozens of different capabilities working together at the same time. He's constantly making decisions while communicating, planning, and executing them under enormous pressure. None of those abilities work in isolation. Every capability is forced in a situation where it has to support and amplify the others. This makes his skills stack incredibly fluid. And this is why intelligence may not be about how much you know. It may be about how effectively your neurons can build what they don't yet know while using the skill stack that you do have to quickly adapt to anything that gets thrown at you. And once you look at it this way, you can really ask the question, what kind of nervous system am I building?
Because some skills by themselves may become outdated. Technology changes, job change, the problems life throws at you constantly change. But if you build a kind of nervous system that can stay analytical under pressure, build strong blueprint, automate your skills as you coordinate those abilities together, you'll always be able to handle whatever your future demands. Maybe that's what makes characters like John Wick so compelling. It was never really about the gunfights. It was about the idea that no matter what problem life throws at [music] him, he has built a nervous system capable of becoming whatever the next challenge requires. But there's still one major problem everyone runs into. Knowing your nervous system upgrades its ability to learn is exciting. But after years of helping people, I found that none of that matters unless you understand the single biggest roadblock that causes people to learn dramatically slower than they're actually capable of.
