Stanhopea Assidensis care & Cattleya tigrina var. alba

[00:00:00]Welcome back to Orchid House. I'm Olivia in Fort Lauderdale, and this is the magnificent Stanhopea accidences.

[00:00:08]I mean, these Stanhopea flowers are always absolutely stunning.

[00:00:13]I will also post another video, short one. It unfortunately doesn't have the format of a short, so I cannot post it as a short. I think it's only 23 seconds with a time lapse, and you see how the flowers open. I still have to master the technology. It's not going to be spectacular, but you see it open up, and it's really cool looking.

[00:00:42]So, the problem with this inflorescence, it's it's fairly crowded. These flowers grow over one another.

[00:00:50]It's a primary hybrid called accidences with wardii and tigrina in the background.

[00:00:56]And wardii and tigrina, so tigrina is a very large flower.

[00:01:01]And this has the size of the tigrina, but in terms of the coloring and everything, it's it's a lot more like like a wardii, I would say, although the shape not quite. I mean, it has a pretty big lip there.

[00:01:17]Unlike tigrina, the uh horns here are very thin and very elegant.

[00:01:24]And but so so this flower is 15 cm across, so like 6 in, which is pretty big. But they are kind of uh growing into one another, which messes up the presentation. Tigrina usually has like two flowers, sometimes four, but usually two. Wardii is one of the most floriferous uh Stanhopea, but has very small flowers, so this is kind of a mixed the flower is beautiful, but the arrangement and presentation is not ideal.

[00:01:54]Uh fragrance fantastic. As always, I struggle to to describe it, but but very pleasant.

[00:02:01]Uh It's a very strong plant. It has 1 2 3 new growths already.

[00:02:07]Uh was repotted last year in a much much larger pot, but it really thrives in there.

[00:02:15]And well, I moved it here for the presentation, but a typical Stanhopea grows in shade actually. The only time in the winter early morning and late afternoon uh the sun reaches the the leaves, but it's a gentle sun. Uh I water them every day. I mean, even with this big one uh it's in an area where there's a lot of ventilation, and so the the medium dries out very quickly every day. So, I I I really have to water it every day. A lot of fertilizing, a lot more than your standard orchids uh at least between May and September I will fertilize this two or three times a a week a week, yeah.

[00:02:53]And uh you know, that's it. I mean, it's a warm grower overall.

[00:02:58]Luteola green actually will take uh colder temperatures.

[00:03:01]But as you can tell, so this is a magnificent and happy baby. And before I let you go, I also wanted to go back the previous video. I talked about uh uh Cattleya tigrina, and it was a standard color form, and I showed you this one with the closed buds, which were about to open up, and here they are opened up. So, alba for Cattleya, well, alba typically means white. In this case, it's basically a green flower with a white lip.
