In Black Swan, Nina's mother's controlling behavior stems from her own unfulfilled ambitions, making her fear that Nina's independence would mean separation and loss; thus, what appears as protection is actually a form of control driven by the parent's need to maintain connection rather than the child's well-being.

When does care become control? (Black Swan)Añadido:
In Black Swan, why does Nina's mother seem so controlling?
It doesn't look like control. She feeds her, watches over her, keeps her close, but none of it is really about Nina.
It's about not losing her.
Her mother never became what she wanted, so Nina has to. And for that to work, she can't grow up.
She has to stay dependent because independence would mean separation.
And separation would feel like loss.
So, what looks like protection is actually control.
