Animals Are Stupid, Therefore God! - A Response to Laurel Elders

[00:00:00]Hello everyone. Today I'm responding to three shorter videos from a channel named Defying Probability. All her videos are short. In fact, these are the longest ones I could find. The first video is called Where is God? Before we get into it, I want to thank my patrons Benjamin Johnson and Michael McConnell.

[00:00:22]>> The other day I was watching a um a documentary on some of the facts of of God. The facts of God. What facts? Like he doesn't exist. That's the only fact of God I know of. He doesn't exist.

[00:00:36]Therefore, he has no properties or facts relating to him. Clean and simple.

[00:00:41]Let's look at your credentials. We have founder/CEO.

[00:00:46]Of what? I don't know, but that's okay.

[00:00:48]We also have author. So, these are three legitimate achievements.

[00:00:53]But, um, God coach and apologist. So, you're a liar and a charlatan. I wouldn't recommend putting that on your resume, but you do you. What is a god coach? Do you just make up you want to believe and then tell people about it? How's that different from an apologist? Maybe you interact with individual people on a personal level. I can also guess it probably has something to do with people losing their faith.

[00:01:17]And another thing, why is your camera so high up? It makes you look like a little girl, but a little girl with a middle-aged face and mannerisms.

[00:01:27]It's genuinely strange and discomforting.

[00:01:29]>> And um this this documentary was outlining and interviewing some people who are in the world of Christianity.

[00:01:36]And one of the the people interviewed was a a pretty prominent Christian singer. I do not recall this person's name um or the documentary. I just remember this in particular um interview and what was dawning on me is that this this Christian um singer had been slowly secondguessing his faith walk and you know he shared with the the person that was doing the interview how he he just basically said you know if God is real then then where is God? Why would God be so invisible?

[00:02:18]>> So, this is the divine hiddenness argument. It's a pretty good argument.

[00:02:23]It's not the best argument against the existence of the Christian God, but it's a good one nonetheless. I wish you had remembered the name of the documentary, or at least the name of the interviewees, so I could do some independent research on this person and on your source. I don't really have much to say because you don't cite your source, but I do have a lot to say about how you respond to Divine Hiddenness.

[00:02:40]So, let's move on now to that. And I just was like, "What?"

[00:02:47]That that shocked me because have you looked around? Have you been to the Grand Canyon? Have you looked at the cellular complex? Have you looked in the mirror? This the complexity of design of the human species and animals. I mean, if you look around, if you are not just mind blown at how miraculous life is that it even exists and all of the evidence that we are so on this planet fine-tuned, the big bang occurrence was so fine-tuned that if one thing was off, it would have imploded back on itself. I mean, it's pretty impressive. So, first you say, "Have you looked around?" This isn't an argument for God. You bring up the Grand Canyon. Again, it's irrelevant. You can go to a library to find a book on the Grand Canyon instead of just going there and going, "Look, it's Mod done it." And you can look at the evidence for the natural geological processes that went into forming the Grand Canyon.

[00:03:52]You start saying, "Have you looked at the cellular complexity?" And then you interrupt yourself by saying that the universe is fine-tuned for humanity.

[00:04:00]That life is so complex it must indicate the universe was fine-tuned specifically for its existence. This is nothing but narcissism.

[00:04:08]You are so special. So the universe was designed for you. I made a response to this argument as a separate video. It's called fine-tuned for what? The main point is if the universe was fine-tuned, it could equally have been fine-tuned for life as any other random process.

[00:04:24]The way stars form is rather complex.

[00:04:26]Could the universe not have been fine-tuned for that? Life is just one process. And we can also discard the fine-tuning argument by simply acknowledging that to think the universe was fine-tuned, we need to exist in a universe where we exist. We are one element of this universe, one expression of reality. We are just one thing in the whole wide world. You also bring up the big bang, saying that if one thing was off, it would not have happened. that may be true but again we clearly exist in universe where that didn't happen so it's ultimately irrelevant >> so that really that really left an impression on me but one thing that I noted was that um this singer did also share that he didn't come to to faith other than he was born into it and maybe was lacking that that personal relationship with God and I think that's one thing I do feel a little blessed about is that I didn't grow up with any religion I asked What is the truth? I started as an atheist and I eliminated bias. I did not care what the answer was. I only wanted the truth and nothing but the truth would do.

[00:05:37]>> It's incredible that all apologists started out as atheists or used to be atheists or some variation on that. It's just amazing that none of them just so happened to always be Christians continuously and nonstop. Especially considering the amount of Christians who were raised as Christians compared to those who weren't or you know they're lying to gain credibility so you're more likely to believe them. But no, I'm sure these are just swell honest folks who genuinely started out in my position and genuinely eliminated bias and blah blah blah. That's why they have such great evidence. Great evidence. Like, have you looked at stuff? I don't know. It was God. And I'd feel sad if God wasn't real. I might even go out and stab someone to death. Therefore, God does exist.

[00:06:32]So looking into the science and the facts and the historical validity, all of that made sense. And only then was I open to having that cultivating that personal relationship with God.

[00:06:45]>> Give me one fact. Give me one piece of evidence that makes Christianity more likely than any other explanation. You know what? I'll be generous. Give me one piece of evidence that makes theism more likely than a non-theistic answer. One thing, one singular thing. Right now, I have reason to actively believe your claim is false.

[00:07:10]You have such good evidence, so many historical and scientific facts. I just want one of them. You really should be able to name upwards of 20, but I just ask for one piece of evidence. Again, I'm being nice. It doesn't have to support Christianity specifically, just theism.

[00:07:30]There is no evidence you can present.

[00:07:34]I've searched high, low, under, over, around, through, across, left, right, center, and behind me. And I've never seen anything even hinting that your idea is in the realm of possible, let alone true.

[00:07:49]But maybe I missed something. Maybe you can finally convert me. So go ahead, give me something, anything to bring me closer to God. But I predict that you not only won't, but can't because God doesn't exist. Christianity is false and you live in a fairy tale wishful thinking land where dead wizards can bring back an entire city's population.

[00:08:15]An entire culture can be turned to salt because a grumpy bearded man in the sky didn't like how they wanted to have sex.

[00:08:22]So, just some things to think about. But if you're losing hope or just feeling a little down, um, and you want to be reinspired, go into nature, go into your own nature. I mean, just thanking God for what you have within yourself is amazing because not only does God create all these possibilities here, God has also created possibilities within you.

[00:08:50]And those are God's human virtues.

[00:08:53]So all of those amazing virtues, compassion, grace, forgiveness, there's so many. Generosity. I have a list. I made a I like making lists. So just remember there are possibilities that God has planted within you and God will help you activate those as you begin to cultivate that relationship and walk closer with him.

[00:09:18]>> Yeah. Uh-huh.

[00:09:21]So, that was that video. The next one is called observational evidence for being created.

[00:09:26]>> Is there any evidence that we were created in God's image?

[00:09:29]>> No, there isn't. There is evidence that we are evolved animals more akin to our relatives like chimpanzees.

[00:09:36]We are apes. We are monkeys. We are primates. We are mammals. We are animals. We are ukarotes etc. This is demonstrable.

[00:09:49]The evidence holds up. And if you don't think it does, I recommend that you look into it further. There is no evidence that a god exists or that we are similar in any way to such an entity.

[00:10:00]Richard Dawkins once said, "If you meet somebody who claims not to believe in evolution, that person is ignorant, stupid, or insane."

[00:10:10]He is absolutely correct. The evidence is so strong for evolution by natural selection that you must either not know the evidence, be actively ignoring the evidence, or have no mind whatsoever for such things as evidence and factual statements.

[00:10:26]>> I say yes. Not only that, I see evidence [music] everywhere, even as a devout atheist.

[00:10:34]quote devout, committed or devoted to religion or to religious duties or exercises unquote. The term devout does not describe atheism. It cannot.

[00:10:50]As I pointed out before, I doubt you were really an atheist in the first place. But granting that you were, you never were a devout atheist because that adjective cannot apply to the philosophical position of atheism.

[00:11:05]Stop trying to demonize us by claiming we are like you. We already know your religion is evil. You don't get to try to drag us down to your level. Knock it off. There was something about evolution that didn't [music] quite add up. And now looking back, I go back to Genesis 1:27.

[00:11:28]So God created man in his [music] image.

[00:11:32]This is really fascinating to me because I was thinking about, you know, if we're created in God's image, [music] then it makes sense that if you look all around, we also create. [music] We are obsessed with new inventions, technology, progress, you name it. And I was looking at the difference between what people create and what the animal kingdom creates. If a beaver could hear you, understand your words, and punch you, I'm sure it would.

[00:12:10]You just put down every single beaver dam, rabbit hole, bird nest, every termite hill and antill, every beehive and wasp hive, every intricate spiderweb, the nighttime nests that chimpanzees create, and many, many more animal structures as not really structures because you are a particularly narcissistic human.

[00:12:37]Structure building is a rather niche ecological niche. It's not a common trait because it's not that useful for most animals, but occurs in many more animals than just humans. To imply that humans are the only ones who truly create anything is astonishingly arrogant. It's narcissistic. You aren't special. Humans are not special. Humans are hairless monkeys. Hairless monkeys that on their own are terrible at survival. hairless monkeys that require other hairless monkeys for basic survival skills that many other animals are able to do on their own. If you put a chimpanzee and a human in the same forest alone, both are going to do poorly, but the human is nine times out of 10 going to do worse than the chimpanzee. The supposed supremacy of humans is first off mainly because of insider bias and secondly because of emergent adaptations from direct adaptations to specific echological niches.

[00:13:34]>> First of all, animals use tools to eat.

[00:13:37]They nest. They tunnel. They burrow. Now these may be instinctive.

[00:13:43]>> Everything is instinctive.

[00:13:45]Everything is instinctive. That is how animals work.

[00:13:52]You have a variety of instincts that led to you making this exact video in this exact way. And if I were a human instead of a demon, the same would apply to me.

[00:14:02]Yes, your environment affects you. Yes, the information you take in affects you.

[00:14:06]Birds learn how to build bird nests from their parents.

[00:14:11]Chimpanzees learn how to build chimpanzeee dens from other chimpanzees.

[00:14:16]Rabbits learn how to build rabbit holes from their rabbit parents.

[00:14:21]But ultimately, everything begins with instinct. You have the instinct to watch your parents work. You have the instinct to do the same thing when you become an adult. You have the instinct to raise your children the way you were raised.

[00:14:33]These instincts permeate basically the entire animal kingdom because they are effective strategies for passing on genes. The world cannot work in any other way. Based on the available evidence, this is the only rational explanation. If I am wrong, present the evidence to me. Otherwise, maybe consider changing your opinions in questioning your assumptions >> cellularly. With one single sentence, it becomes clear and obvious to every single person watching who took a high school or even middle school biology class that you have absolutely no clue what you're talking about and that you should keep your mouth shut. Wisdom is shutting up. I recommend you try being more wise.

[00:15:21]>> And by instinctive, I mean really encoded embedded behaviors that are not learned. and your entire argument falls apart. The act of building these structures is learned for many of the animals I previously mentioned. For some of them, it is not learned, but for the birds and the mammals at least, it is.

[00:15:39]>> Also, they have some hunting strategies for survival. These are again instinctual, not really created.

[00:15:46]>> If I have learned anything from these videos, it's that theism relies on, thrives on, it requires a certain level of ignorance.

[00:15:57]One cannot hold a theistic view beyond the basic claim that some higher power exists while having an understanding of our world and the way things operate in it. It is impossible.

[00:16:11]This is why I say there almost certainly is no god. In many ways, most theistic models are counterfactual in at least one part. And in so much as they aren't, they are unproven at best, assumptive and uncurious at worst.

[00:16:27]>> Just out of curiosity, I wanted to know, okay, what all do humans create? Here's a short list. Astrophysics, stamps, tennis shoes, lace, football games, footballs, houses, skyscrapers, airplanes, cooking, weaving, photography, scissors, papers, cars, jets, concrete, shoelaces, yoga mats, grocery stores, freezers, refrigerators, guns, prisons, clothing, comic books, plays, concerts, violins, orchestras, chiropractic, medicine, parachutes, engines, tires, decorations, tears, chainsaws, monster trucks, hair ties, shampoo, coffee mugs, herbal tees, straws, plates, napkins, fertilizer, rings, jewelry, lawnmowers, universities, pavement, mailboxes, junk mail rooms, bean bags, couches, recliners, suicide, shootings, war. Those last three, suicides, shootings, and war can be summed up as violence. Violence towards oneself or towards others.

[00:17:11]In the case of the first of the three and the last of the three, we know that other animals do these things. We know of chimpanzeee wars and ant wars. They are real. We have directly observed them.

[00:17:25]Violence is not a human creation.

[00:17:27]Violence goes back to single-sellled organisms and the very origin of life itself. It is not new. If you think humans are the first to be violent, you are either ignorant, stupid, or insane.

[00:17:41]Based on how you seem as a person, I'm going to say it's a mix of all three.

[00:17:44]Primarily insanity, a large amount of ignorance, more than a drop of stupidity. You are uncurious, unserious, unlearned, undereducated, and ill-informed.

[00:17:57]I do not insult people. If you think I am insulting you, then you should consider changing the type of person you are. I only say what I see. If I call your car red and you find that insulting, you should go to the auto body shop and get it changed. Gift cards, ornaments, checklists, organizers, strings, sewing kits, quantum physics, band-aids, cough, medicine, throat lesseners, glasses, slip and slides, hoses, bird feeders, windows, bookshelves, carpets, rugs, brushes, toothbrushes, tractors, skyscrapers, flags, ships, yachts, bridges, policers, slippers, college, corporations, money, mirrors, showers, tiles, climbing ropes, carabiners, bows, and arrows, philosophy, math, algebra, calculus, stress balls, candles, light bulb, emotional intimacy, poetry, art, music, air conditioning, heaters, pots and pans. I don't know if I've repeated myself. I don't think so. fake breasts, wigs, makeup, cutting boards, washing machines, stairs, bells, licenses, government red tape policies, processes, quality assurance consultants, therapists, coaches, strainers, fruit baskets, taxiderermy, radon detectors, fireplaces, bird cages, zoos, hoas, states, countries, boundaries, best practices, credentials, timing systems, psychotherapy, farming practices, bingo, mosaics, saunas, birthday cakes, theories, weather forecasts, statistics.

[00:18:53]So, I think you get the point.

[00:18:55]I got the point before you said any of your list. I'm surprised you didn't say language. People love to mention that one. The problem is that, and you did sidestep this issue, other animals demonstrate the ability to do language, complex language even. Dolphins, most birds, cats, primates of all kinds, bees, and many other animals have demonstrated the ability to communicate with each other and in some cases the ability to communicate with humans in a way that we would describe as language.

[00:19:24]And in ways that are sometimes highly complex, sometimes even more complex than human infants.

[00:19:29]>> That's not a small list. That is massive list. And like I said, even as an atheist, the gap, massive gap, we're not talking a small gap. The massive gap between the animal kingdom and human beings didn't add up because you would think if if only evolution were at play, we would see more variations in evolution. Instead, it's almost as if the animal kingdom kind of leveled out and humans just exploded.

[00:20:03]>> How's the bliss? You clearly have little to no understanding of the animal kingdom. I'll be surprised if you ever seen a deer in person before, to be honest. How am I supposed to take you seriously when you genuinely believe what you claim to believe? I would almost think you're trolling if you didn't seem so sincere.

[00:20:20]This is embarrassing to listen to, let alone how I imagine it would feel to have produced this garbage. I highly recommend you read books and scientific papers on animals. There's several books talking about the animal kingdom and all kinds of different animals.

[00:20:37]I would recommend a book like The Encyclopedia of Animals, a complete visual guide by Fred Cook, Hugh Dingle, Steven Hutchinson, Richard Schroed, Null Tate, and Richard Carl Vog.

[00:20:51]There are many fascinating and unique animals out there and almost and almost any trait or adaption you can imagine has occurred due to different environments and survival pressures.

[00:20:59]>> Okay, just for fun, I pointed out a lot of what human beings are creating. Now let's go to God. Oxygen, hydrogen, atoms, carbon, iron, metals, mammals, bears, skunks, animals, elephants, horses, dogs, wolves, bacteria, birds, owls, pets, fish, sparrows, cardinals, worlers, sandpipers, pellets, blue js, hummingbirds, robins, sustains, bald, wind peppers, insects, beetles, art, insects, beetles, ants, flies, crazy mises, have seen those earwigs, lady bugs, crickets, cicas, walking sticks, water, fireflies, absolutely amazing, bees, absolutely fascinating, grass, butterflies, moths, dragon flies, tigers, all the sea creatures. [00:22:19]These human virtues are everything from acceptance, acknowledgement, appreciation, authenticity, balance, enthusiasm, ethics, equinimity, excellence, extension, faith, fairness, flexibility, fortitude, forgiveness, generosity, gentleness, hopefulness, humility, humor, imagination, inner peace, inspiration, joyfulness, modesty, nobility, openness, optimism, perseverance, reason, reciprocation, ation, reliability, respect, responsibility, resourcefulness, resilience, restraint, responsiveness, sensitivity, steadfastness, service, sincerity, surrender, sympathy, selflessness, spontaneity, strength, tact, temperance, tenderness, understanding, unity, vision, wholeness, wholesomeness, willingness, wisdom, worthiness, wonder, zeal, and spirit.

[00:23:16]>> Cool. Prove it. It's a nice list. Now prove it. It should be easy according to Romans 1:20. So go ahead. Prove it.

[00:23:27]>> So there you have it. To me, being created in God's image [music] is undeniable.

[00:23:35]>> Yeah, I'm sure Andrea Yates thought it was undeniable that her kids were going to go to hell.

[00:23:41]This next video is called Five Ways to Spend More Time with God. Seeing as I have yet to believe in a God, I sure think I'll get a lot out of this video.

[00:23:50]>> This year, I invite [music] you to intentionally carve time out to be with God.

[00:23:56]>> Ah, I see how it is. He's an all powerful super being so far above me, I cannot fully comprehend him, but I'm the one who has to use my time to hang out with him.

[00:24:07]>> Spending [music] time with God is really a form of protection from deception, from a lot of challenges. that helps us rise above and it [music] helps us live through wisdom even in the greatest of challenges.

[00:24:21]>> I do not appreciate your disgusting, deceptive, manipulative twisting of the word wisdom. You do not understand wisdom. You are not wise. And if wisdom walked right up to you and told you why your god isn't real, you'd demand its foolishness.

[00:24:40]There are no gods. You live in wishful thinking fairy tale land and I am going to ask you to never use the word wisdom again until you learn what wisdom actually is. You have none of it as demonstrated from your last video. The most basic form of wisdom is shutting up and listening. And evidently you have not done that yet.

[00:25:06]Anyway, you mentioned that spending time with God helps protect against doubt.

[00:25:11]Doubt is a good thing. Your spending time with God sounds exactly the same to me as cult indoctrination. I hope the rest of this video illuminates the difference, but I doubt it will because I'm almost certain you've been brainwashed into a cult, probably since you were a child. And don't get me wrong, I am sorry for you. But that doesn't stop me from telling you why you're wrong and how to not be. And it doesn't stop me from even being rude to you, even intentionally.

[00:25:38]Sometimes what you need to snap out of a delusion is a kick in the head.

[00:25:42]>> So let's explore. There's five different ways that you can spend time with [music] God. The first one is communion.

[00:25:48]So this is spending time in prayer.

[00:25:51]Prayer is how we commune and connect with God directly. Prayer reaches out.

[00:25:56]It's a turning on a light bulb that alerts God to our needs and desires.

[00:26:02]>> He's God. He already knows all of your needs and desires. If he doesn't, he isn't God under the Christian definition.

[00:26:12]My friend once aptly put it, "If a God exists, you have to face the fact that this was all on purpose."

[00:26:20]If Christianity is true, nothing that happens isn't going according to plan.

[00:26:26]Every bomb explodes because God decided it should. Every gun is fired because God decided the trigger should be pulled. Every child who gets cancer gets because he decided a tumor should develop. Every rape victim gets raped because God decided they should be. In a Christian worldview, everything is by God's design. Either that or God is not all knowing and all powerful.

[00:26:49]>> The second way is through [music] contemplation. Spending time in contemplation is a great way to spend time with [music] God. Contemplation is where God's wisdom can really come through. And so that could be something like a Bible verse or something in scripture. You just spend time thinking about it and communing with it.

[00:27:09]Contemplation and communion is really where God's wisdom can nourish us so that we can grow deeper roots.

[00:27:16]>> From my position as a lifelong atheist, I see no evidence for any gods. I have studied many deities and when I tell you that there have been millions, I am not lying. No satisfactory evidence for any deities has ever been given to me. Every example of supposed evidence has been facious, assumptive, or otherwise reliant on the person listening already being a believer. So this is my challenge. Imagine that you are a lifelong atheist. You do not believe in a god. You have never believed in a god.

[00:27:47]You've never experienced anything spiritual. Put yourself in my shoes.

[00:27:51]Convince this version of yourself that a god exists. Not even that your god exists, but that a deity exists. Don't halfass it. Don't say cosmological argument and throw in the towel. Sit down and list all the reasons why God likely exists and try your best to prove them wrong as if you were a lifelong atheist such as myself.

[00:28:12]Really try.

[00:28:14]You might find that a god does not exist or you might strengthen your faith that a god does exist. Either way, be open to any possibility of this experiment and truly embrace this challenge. You could sit down and contemplate the Bible all day, but you know that doesn't really challenge your faith in any way. I'm sure that's what you like about the Bible because doubt is demonic or satanic or whatever. But I assure you it isn't. If doubt is really demonic, I I want you to take every claim you hear in the next 48 hours at face value without questioning at all and see where that gets you.

[00:28:49]>> The third way is through conception. To conceive something is to realize. And we can conceive God's guidance when we sit and listen. God's guidance is placed on our hearts anytime we ask. The question is, are we listening? Are we spending time and making space for God's guidance to come through and support us?

[00:29:11]>> Your internal conception of the outside world is not satisfactory evidence of the verification of claims about the external world. The internal world is relevant to the facts of the external world. This should be obvious to all people over age 12. Number four is through creation. We can also spend time being creative. This could be projects, crafts, art, something at church. When we're creating, um the church that I attend has this amazing play every year.

[00:29:41]They spend time in creation.

[00:29:43]>> The ape capacity for creativity is not from a god. The ape capacity for creativity comes from adaptations for an environment where quick thinking in changing circumstances was necessary for survival. Apes aren't the only creatives out there either, but I won't get into that. I'm sure you'll read all about it in the Encyclopedia of Animals, a complete visual guide.

[00:30:05]I've grown tired of Christians stealing things from man and giving them to God.

[00:30:09]Things like morality, love, beauty, creativity, grace, forgiveness, these things are human. Not just humans, but they are natural capacities of humans.

[00:30:19]These are traits that evolved because humans are a social species. Stop being God's little thief. Give them back from whence they came and you'll realize they were in you from the start. As a social animal, you are capable of sympathy.

[00:30:32]Morality is learned from sympathy. Its basis is not learned. It is innate.

[00:30:38]As an ape, you are capable of long-term bonds. This is what we call love. As a creature, you have aesthetic preferences based on fears, goals, and survival instincts that contribute to your understanding of beauty. You have grace and forgiveness because you are a social animal. And society would collapse if humans did not have these things. I've said it before and I'll say it again.

[00:30:58]Humans feel how humans feel because it was better for their ape ancestors to hunt together, to live together, to protect each other, than it was for them to hunt alone, live alone, and fight alone.

[00:31:10]Theists like to accuse atheists of lacking this sense of awe at these virtues. I find the fact that these things evolved out of necessity to be beautiful. It shows that a human life very much is reliant on other people.

[00:31:24]People need each other. If this was all just a part of some cosmic plan, I would find the whole thing very corporate and bureaucratic, which doesn't make it false, but it would be disappointing. I believe many disappointing things because they have evidence unlike your claim.
