These are the latest details that have been put out uh by the Prime Minister office over the meeting that happened between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Marco Rubio that lasted for more than an hour. Uh taking this to my colleague Pranopad who's tracking all the developments.
Prane with regards to how the meeting went and what was discussed to update our viewers on it.
>> As you mentioned Susha that was the meeting lasted for over an hour and it was a warm meeting in a very cordial atmosphere. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a warm exchange of greetings as well as uh they had discussion about the various facets of India US relation as you mentioned from education and technology to to uh you know critical minerals to defense to trade various issue figured in this hourong discussion between Prime Minister Modi and uh and Secretary Marco Rubio and Prime Minister also conveyed his greetings for the US President Donald Trump uh because Secretary Marco Rubio also carried a message from President Donald Trump to Prime Minister Modi and he also invited Prime Minister Modi to United States. uh and in fact uh both the leaders prime minister also expressed his that he's looking forward to have continued exchange with uh secretary with President Donald Trump and in fact uh both the leaders did discuss uh the prevailing situation as far as the west Asia conflict is concerned as far as the global and the regional affairs are concerned uh as you know sa that secretary Michael Rubio is in India for the quad foreign minister's meeting which will be held on 26th of May 2026 And uh for that the Japanese and Australian foreign minister would also be joining uh in India and in fact this is the first quad foreign ministers meeting after a gap of of six months and in fact uh this is the first high level contact of Trump administration directly with Prime Minister Modi. Uh in fact both the leaders President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Modi uh has the possibility of having a meeting on the sidelines of the G7 summit which is which will be held in France next month.
So uh in fact in that context as well this meeting is important but certainly you know there is a look forward for bilateral engagement uh with uh bilateral engagement of secretary Marco Rubio with external affairs minister Dr. Shankar and this bilateral meeting will be taking place tomorrow afternoon at around 12 and uh in fact that meeting will discuss the various gambits of uh you know and various facets of this relationship because India US comprehensive global strategic partnership is a multifaceted partnership. In fact, uh both countries have set an ambitious target of over of uh taking their bilateral trade to $500 billion which is a very ambitious target set in February 2025 when Prime Minister Modi visited uh uh White House last year. But after that we have seen various phases in the bilateral relationship. So to set the agenda for the next course of you know steps to to take forward the relationship what exactly what concrete steps can be taken and also you know Indian side will expect Marco Rubio to brief about the ongoing negotiation as far as the West Asia conflict is concerned as far as uh you know the the prevailing situation and the uh the continued disruption of of the shipping in the state of Hormos is concerned.
Oh yes absolutely and prior do also uh detail for us uh what is to happen tomorrow in that meeting between uh US secretary of state Marco Rubio and EM J Shankar whether the points that he discussed with Prime Minister Narendra Modi today will be detailed and structured and given a direction tomorrow when he meets the EM >> uh if you have noticed external affairs minister Dr. J Shankhar National Security Adviser Ajit Dual both were present when Secretary Maria called on Prime Minister Narend Modi and they had this meeting. Uh so certainly it's uh the his meeting with Excel Affairs Minister Dr. Dashanka will be in continuation of uh the these talks which were held with prime minister today and in fact they will be they will be discussing the finer details uh and laying the road map uh that what are the concrete steps that can be taken because we have seen many turbulent phases of this relationship in last one and a half year be it the tariff decisions by the Trump administration or visa visa issues because immigration has also emerged an important area of concern.
uh recent data issued by the US uh you know citizenship and immigration department clearly indicates that the number of H1B visas have gone down and in fact uh there are difficulties being faced by the Indian professionals and in fact as recent as yesterday the US department of homeland security has also changed the rules for the for the green cards and in fact uh as for the new rules to uh the green card applicants need to go back to their home countries and then wait rather than staying in United States and waiting for the green card approval. So certainly it affects many Indians uh those who are there for for over a decade those who have young kids there. So these are important areas of concern and certainly government of India the minister of external affairs uh will be taking uh forward and will be taking up this issue with the with the Trump administration and secretary Marco Rubio and tomorrow's uh you know diplomatic engagement with him.
All right, Preny, thanks for getting us those details. Of course, we'll keep coming back to you for further updates, especially the meeting that is scheduled to happen with EMJ Shanka tomorrow noon on a Sunday.
