Jesus teaches that Christians should not seek revenge or retaliation but instead respond to evil with non-violence and love, as demonstrated in the Gospel reading where Jesus instructs his disciples to turn the other cheek, give more than asked, and forgive those who wrong them, reflecting God's unconditional love for all people.

>> Good morning, everyone.
Come together on this Monday morning of the 11th week in ordinary time.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
The Lord be with all of you.
In our liturgy this morning, Jesus challenges us not to seek revenge or retaliation.
To prepare ourselves to celebrate these sacred mysteries of the Eucharist, let us begin by acknowledging our sins.
Lord, you raise us to new life. Lord, have mercy.
Lord, you forgive our sins. Christ, have mercy.
Lord, you feed us with your body and blood.
Lord, have mercy.
May almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life.
Let us pray.
O God, strength of those who hope in you, graciously hear our pleas, and since without you mortal frailty can do nothing, grant us always the help of your grace, and in following your commands, may we please you by our resolve and our deeds through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.
Peace be seated.
>> A reading from the first book of Kings.
Nabeth the Jezreelite had a vineyard in Jezreel next to the palace of Ahab, king of Samaria.
Ahab said to Nabeth, "Give me your vineyard to be my vegetable garden, since it is close by next to my house.
I will give you a better vineyard in exchange, or if you prefer, I will give you its value in money.
Naboth answered him, "The Lord forbid that I should give you my ancestral heritage."
Ahab went home disturbed and angry at the answer Naboth the Jezreelite had made to him.
"I will not give you my ancestral heritage."
Lying down on his bed, he turned away from food and would not eat.
His wife, Jezebel, came to him and said to him, "Why are you so angry that you will not eat?"
He answered her, "Because I spoke to Naboth the Jezreelite and said to him, 'Sell me your vineyard or if you prefer, I will give you a vineyard in exchange.'
But he refused to let me have his vineyard."
His wife, Jezebel, said to him, "A fine ruler over Israel are you indeed.
Get up, eat, and be cheerful.
I will obtain the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite for you."
So, she wrote letters in Ahab's name and having sealed them with his seal, send them to the elders and to the nobles who live in the city with Naboth.
This is what she wrote in the letters.
Proclaim a fast and set Naboth at the head of the people.
Next, get two scoundrels to face him and accuse him of having cursed God and king.
Then, take him out and stone him to death.
His fellow citizens, the elders and nobles who dwell in his city, did as Jezebel had ordered them in writing through the letters she had sent them.
They proclaim a fast and place Naboth at the head of the people.
Two scoundrels came in and confronted her him with the accusation.
Naboth has cursed God and king.
And they left led him out of the city and they stoned him to death.
Then they send the information to Jezebel that Naboth had been a stone to death.
When Jezebel learned that Naboth been stoned to death.
She said to Ahab, "Go on, take possession of the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite that he refused to sell you because Naboth is not alive, but dead."
On hearing that Naboth was dead, Ahab he started off on his way on his way down to the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite to take possession of it.
The word of the Lord.
Lord, listen to my groaning.
>> Lord, listen to my groaning.
>> Hearken to my words, oh Lord.
Attend to my sighing.
Heed my call for help, my king and my God.
>> Lord, listen to my groaning.
>> At dawn, I bring my plea expectantly before you.
For you, oh God, delight not in wickedness.
No evil man rebe- remains with you.
The arrogant may not stand in your sight.
>> Lord, listen to my groaning.
>> You hate all evil doers. You destroy all who speak falsehood.
The bloodthirsty and the deceitful the Lord abhors.
>> Lord, listen to my groaning.
>> Hallelujah.
Hallelujah.
Hallelujah. [singing] A lamp to my feet is your word, a light to my path.
Hallelujah.
Hallelujah.
Hallelujah.
>> The Lord be with you.
A reading from the holy gospel according to Matthew.
>> Glory to you, >> Glory to you, >> Jesus said to his disciples, "You have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.'
But I say to you, 'Offer no resistance to one who is evil.
When someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other one to him as well.
If anyone wants to go to law with you over your tunic, hand him your cloak as well.
Should anyone press you into service for 1 mile, go with him 2 miles.
Give to the one who asks of you, and do not turn your back on one who wants to borrow.
The Gospel of the Lord.
Someone once said, "If you hit me, I'm going to hit you back harder."
An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.
If all of us lived according to that guideline, all of us eventually would be toothless and blind.
Jesus challenges us today not to seek revenge or retaliation, not to choose violence.
Pope Francis had a wonderful reflection on the Gospel this morning.
We know that what the law meant, when someone takes something from you, you are to take the same thing from him.
The law of retaliation was actually at that time a sign of progress, since it prevented excessive retaliation.
If someone harms you, then you can repay him or her in the same degree.
You cannot do something worse.
Ending the matter there is a fair exchange and was a step forward back in those days.
But Jesus goes far beyond this.
But I say to you, "Do not resist one who is evil."
But how, Lord?
If someone thinks badly of me, if somebody hurts me, >> [clears throat] >> why can I not repay him with the same currency?
>> [clears throat] >> "No," says Jesus.
No.
Choose non-violence.
No act of violence, Jesus challenges.
We might think that Jesus teaching is a part of a plan.
In the end, the wicked will desist.
But that is not why Jesus asks us to love.
Even those who harms us.
What then is the reason?
It is that the Father, our Father, continues to love everyone, even when his love is not reciprocated.
If we want to be disciples of Jesus, if we want to call ourselves Christians, this is the only way.
There is no other.
Having been loved by God, we are called to love in return.
Having been forgiven, we are all called to forgive.
Having been touched by love, we are called to love without waiting for others to love us first.
Having been saved graciously, we are called to seek no benefit from the good we do.
Let us stand, please.
And called as we are not to seek revenge or retaliation, to move away from violence, let us entrust to our heavenly Father these prayers of petition.
And so let us pray for all on the fringes of society.
May God provide for the acceptance and help that they need. We pray to the Lord.
Let us pray for all who worship here this morning.
May the grace of the Holy Spirit help us to grow in love and holiness.
We pray to the Lord.
Let us pray that we may not seek revenge nor retaliation and move away from any kind of violence.
We pray to the Lord.
We pray for the intentions of our mass on this Monday morning.
For the intentions of Celarina Bautista, for Rachel Ramos, we pray for the repose of the souls of Antonio Gallardo, for Rosario Arvisu, and for Angel Camu.
For all of these, we pray to the Lord.
For our own personal prayer.
Heavenly Father, we ask all of this through Christ our Lord. Amen. Please be seated.
>> [clears throat] >> Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation. For through your goodness, we have received the bread we offer you, fruit of the earth and work of human hands. It will become for us the bread of life.
>> Blessed be God forever.
Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation. For through your goodness, we have received the wine we offer you, fruit of the vine and work of human hands. It will become our spiritual drink.
Pray that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God the almighty father.
Oh God, who in the offerings presented here provide for the twofold needs of human nature, nourishing us with food and renewing us with your sacrament, grant we pray that the sustenance they provide may not fail us in body or in spirit through Christ our Lord.
The Lord be with you.
Lift up your hearts.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere to give you thanks, Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God, through Christ our Lord.
For out of compassion for the waywardness that is ours, Jesus humbled himself and was born of the Virgin.
By the passion of the cross, he freed us from unending death, and by rising from the dead, he gave us life eternal.
And so with angels and archangels, with thrones and dominations, and with all of the hosts and powers of heaven, we sing the hymn of your glory, as without end we acclaim, Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of hosts. Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.
You are indeed holy, oh Lord, the fount of all holiness.
Make holy, therefore, these gifts, we pray, by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall, so that they may become for us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ.
At the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion, he took bread and giving thanks, broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, "Take this, all of you, and eat of it.
For this is my body, which will be given up for you.
In a similar way, when supper was ended, he took the chalice, and once more, giving thanks, he gave it to his disciples, saying, "Take this, all of you, and drink from it.
For this is the chalice of my blood, the blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in memory of me."
>> [clears throat] >> The mystery of faith.
Save us, savior of the world, for by your cross and resurrection, you have set us free.
Therefore, as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection, we offer you, Lord, the bread of life and the chalice of salvation, giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and to minister to you.
Humbly, we pray that partaking of the body and blood of Christ, we may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit.
Remember, Lord, your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity, together with Leo, our Pope, Jose, our Bishop, and all of the clergy.
Remember our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection, and all who have died in your mercy.
Welcome them into the light of your face.
Have mercy on us all, we pray, that with the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with Saint Joseph, her spouse, with the Blessed Apostles, and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages, we may merit to be co-heirs to eternal life, and may praise and glorify you through your Son, Jesus Christ.
Through him, and with him, and in him, O God, almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours forever and ever.
Amen.
And so we stand together, please.
Called as we all are to choose non-violence, to choose not to retaliate nor seek revenge, let us pray the words that Jesus has given to us.
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
Deliver us, Lord, we pray from every evil.
Graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior Jesus Christ.
Lord Jesus Christ, you said to your apostles, "I leave you peace, my peace I give to you. Look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign forever and ever."
Peace of the Lord be with you always.
Let us share with each other the sign of peace.
Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, grant us peace.
Behold the lamb of God.
Behold him who takes away the sins of the world.
Blessed are those called to the supper of the lamb.
Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.
>> Mhm.
>> Let us pray.
As this reception of your holy communion, O Lord, foreshadows the union of the faithful in you, so may it bring about unity in your church through Christ our Lord. Amen.
So, everyone, after mass this morning, confession's available here in the church.
You're welcome to stay on and pray the rosary if you are able.
The Lord be with you.
And may almighty God bless you, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
The mass is ended. Let us go now to love and to serve the Lord and one another.
Thanks be to God. Have a good day today, too.
Thank you.
